That's terrible. Does anyone know where this happened?
This was the son of my best friends parents friends.
It is a true tragedy and I pray for the peace of his family and friends in
This trying time.
mmoffat1980 - I am so sorry for your friends loss. I will have them in my thoughts through this unthinkable tragedy.

Two eye witness accounts in the comment section.
soooo back to the ambulance . . . where was again? . . .
Yes, a tragety but one that could have been avoided. Maybe it is why you mother warns you not to play in the street or stick a bobby pin in a light socket.
Condolences to the family and friends and, I hope, a warning why Jamaica should be approached and used with caution as "you are not in Kansas anymore Dorothy".
Peace and Guidance and R.I.P.
I hope I never need emergency medical care in negril. It always sounds like nothing but mass confusion.

I find this statement very callous and in poor taste.
Maybe Rick's should do a better job of policing there own property. They profit from there fee to jump, and don't make sure those jumping aren't completely wasted. I'd be very interested to know annual revenue for that establishment.
Accompong I for one do not find your statement callous at all or in pooor taste Any one that is not a professional diver or has not done this in the past has NO bussiness jumping off a cliff in a country that is not first world, and that if you had done just a bit of research on in regards to ambulatory services and hospitals you would have known that if something goes wrong you are Flucked. It is sad but not as sad as the jet-ski incedent or the drowning of the twin boys in Mo-bay in my opinion. Doesn't seem like the person had any common sense at the ripe age of 26. Wonder how he got this far in life.
"Wonder how he got this far in life."... seriously WTF newfiegirl?!?!?!?!
Well, I can certainly see why this girl doesn't think it's callous.
Also...ripe old age of 26?
Should no one over 40 go to Negril since heart attacks can happen? My problem isn't lack of emergency care. I understand that. But to me it's the negligence at Ricks.
It is called assumption of the risk and this poor fellow assumed it. How horrible for his family. I read the comments from the article Tizzy provided and the MD who stated onlookers were told he was just drunk, etc. I hate to speak on things I know little facts about, but what he attempted and what resulted from that attempt show he was not an experienced diver, or if he was- perhaps too impaired to execute the dive. As far as critical comments about Ricks- and how an ambulance should have been quicker, etc. There are Jamaicans who live there and know immediate medical care is non-existent to them in life threatening situation, let alone tourists who "place" themselves in life threatening situations demanding some type of extraordinary care. I must say I agree Accompong entirely.
Sad thing.
Whoever is at fault, a place like Ricks that rakes in money hand over fist should be prepared for something like this. Based on the comments, it didnt seem like they were.
By prepared, I mean a trained staff ready for an emergency. The proper equipment to handle trauma. The trained staff should be drilled regularly etc.
Maybe they are. Who knows.
Just my thoughts.
We as good human beings should offer our love and support to those who lost their loved ones..certainly is not a good time to judge or question the deceased..it doesn't change anything..most of us have known people who have died unfortunate deaths through many means..their family needs love and support..if it happened to one of us..we would want the same..
I say let's cut off this thread. I would hope we are all sad this happened. Like any accident the victim would wish he had a chance to rethink a decision. Sometimes an e mail sounds callous while in person it would not . We don.t want to offend any family or friends
Tragic loss for family ! I agree Rick's should have a plan for accidents with all the money that place makes. What about the ambulance ?
Newfie girl- I am sure the mother of this young man would say it is
Equally as tragic and awful as the mother if the twins you speak of in your post. And
While the response may not have been as organized and efficient as what
We are used to in the first world it certainley was the best anyone there could do
And the fact that he was not in the first world has sweet f all to do
With what happened. I find your response highly offensive and hope
For your sake nothing as tragic or accidental happens to anyone you care about.
I don't think any staff could be trained to a level that could deal with the crush injuries or skeletal injuries this man potentially had.
Also tourists jump of the cliffs at lots of other points in the west end hotels, so how could this be implemented for the whole area?
God bless this young man his friends and family.
Blame won't be helpful, but a proper investigation, review and recommendation for changes will hopefully ensure this doesn't happen again.
(First world, third world!!! Very outdated terminology )
SMH. Some of the comments on here really show a lack of character..... or simple compassion. I've read enough that's for sure.
(Respect to those who contributed in a helpful way or offered condolences to the loved ones)
sad mon.......mi hate hearing this.......ugh
the ambulance going up to Rick's was almost a daily afternoon occurrence this past Winter....
mi can hear it from mi apt..... and in one five day period mi heard it go by every afternoon around sunset....
hard to believe but tru...some may have been car accidents...but usually it had to do with Rick's
they have more than their share of accidents and being people getting hurt up there......
so mi pretty sure Rick's is fairly prepared for this by now.......
Rick's probably pulls in more money than all the other bars in Negril put together.....
Cool Runnings, Marko
Sorry that this thread has taken on this kind of tone, MMoffat.
I think since this board is read by friends/family of this young man....we could be a little more respectful & less judgemental of this horrible tragedy.
Especially since none of us were there & most of us have done things that we are lucky to have gotten out of safely.
There are sooooo many reasons I hate going to Ricks. Let's add another one to the list.
Bnewb- please do not apologize. Some ppl
Show their true colours in a few words.
Westenders- you are so right about the terms "first world, third world"
I should have used quotes to show I was referring to Newfie's statement
I was just emotional at the time.
Had I typed what I was truly feeling I probably would have been
Banned from the board.
My heartfelt condolences to the family, may your heart and soul find peace and comfort.
A beautiful boy of 26 has lost his life and a circle of family and friends is devastated, totally broken. The boardie inquiry and finger pointing judgement should be held in another court.
Peace
Yes this poor young man used poor judgement in attempting a back flip but honestly who hasn't exhibited poor judgement at one point or other in their lives. Truly tragic accident :(
Once again though, where the hell was the ambulance???
