Cliff jumping, Jet Skis, Horses and more
Folks, the recent loss of life from cliff jumping seems to show a sad side of this board that Rob provides us with. No one should be critical of what actually happened. The young man jumped and unfortunately paid a horrible price for his actions.
Those who have been less than sensitive about this event really makes me sad. We all go to Jamaica for a wonderful experience. He made a choice in a country where tings aren't like where you are from. "Kansas".... thanks Accompong.
To have a thread over an event like this moved from condolences and "respect" for life lost to finger pointing seems to me to be a bit out of line.
For those who are upset about lack of emergency facilities, there are efforts to build new medical facilities in Negril. Perhaps you should support those efforts.
Folks being injured cliff jumping isn't something new. If this was happening in my area the lawyers would have shut it down a long time ago.
From the jet ski accident months ago, to the horses romping pon da beach ....bad stuff happens and will happen again.
Can we just have a bit of sympathy for a family with a horrible loss without accusations and the blame game?
Respect mon,
LBR

Yes, a tragety but one that could have been avoided. Maybe it is why you mother warns you not to play in the street or stick a bobby pin in a light socket.
Condolences to the family and friends and, I hope, a warning why Jamaica should be approached and used with caution as "you are not in Kansas anymore Dorothy".
Peace and Guidance and R.I.P.
You might find this "callous" and "uncaring" but I look at it pragmatically.
If you drive respecting the laws and rules of the road and have a "fender bender", well that is an "accident". If you propel yourself down the road at 100+ miles an hour and kill someone, that is Murder. If you kill yourself? That is Suicide.
I have empathy for his family and friends. I stated that above but I don't suffer fools that make bad choices. Whatever he was try to prove by recklessly jumping off a perfectly safe cliff proved nothing.
I grew up in a time where you took ownership of your actions. They call that "accountability". I have a huge amount of sympathy and empathy for someone who is injured or killed through no fault of their own but, again, I believe in "contributory negligence".

This sign is perfectly visible and warns of the liability you assume when you decide to live your life dangerously.
When you live in Jamaica, a little of the pitina that obscures the reality of life tends to erode away. In over 30 years, I have witnessed and been an unwilling party to everything from robbery to murder and much more in between. If it makes you feel better to blame Ricks or the lack of medical care instead of putting some responsibility on the jumper then be my guest. If your being an infrequent or frequent visitor to Negril or Jamaica makes your feel a personal connection to what happens there then that is okay too but don't judge me or my motives without first walking a mile in my shoes.
I wished him "R.I.P" and I think that is all the "Respect" I am obliged to show.
Peace and Guidance

Or you can just say nothing.

Re: Cliff jumping, Jet Skis, Horses and more
Really Accompong...you may have grown up in a time where you took responsibility for your actions..I have a feeling we are close in the age department (50's).. but it saddens me that it is more important for you to feel right and or superior than to know when to keep your pompous remarks to your self and just show compassion and respect.. because we were also raised in the era of "if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all! If you cant differentiate that this is a time where nothing but compassion for the deceased and his family is the only thing that should be shared publicly with regards to this situation, than my heart aches for you as much as it does for the deceased and his family!!!!
Peace and (maybe you need more) Guidance!

Well said ! I wouldn't have been so kind in my response to Accompong so chose to say nothing. Thanks Shakedown

Re: Cliff jumping, Jet Skis, Horses and more
Accompong, I have been reading your posts and you storys of living in Jamaica for many years now and have had nothing but respect for you, until now. There is a time and a place for everything and your timing is way off. You speak of love and peace and guidance yet you practice none. As Shakedown said if you dont have anything nice to say..then maybe its time to keep your trap shut.

Re: Cliff jumping, Jet Skis, Horses and more
I don't see death posted on that sign.
I stated that above but I don't suffer fools that make bad choices. Whatever he was try to prove by recklessly jumping off a perfectly safe cliff proved nothing.
Ouch.
Such judgement. One with a smaller mind might argue that even going to Jamaica is foolish and dangerous. Much less moving there. But that is a risk we all take. I believe this man was held accountable for his mistake. May he rest in peace.
My big reservation with this whole thing is the Newspaper reporting he struck rocks. Something is amiss here.
The respect you are showing Accompong reminds me of that guy on the beach trying to steal my money, girl, and cigg's then fist bumps me and says respect.

Accompong,
Yes, you just "shut your trap".
You have been tried and convicted of "poor taste".
By whom, the Negril boardies, the most high and final
arbiters of good taste and from whom all knowledge of good
and evil freely flows.
Shame on you Accompong, you have defied the great boardie
court of the most correct opinions, therefore, shut your trap.

Re: Cliff jumping, Jet Skis, Horses and more
I grew up during the same time and was taught that if you don't have anything nice to say, shut up. You can think these things but you don't openly say them on a oublic forum where it can be hurtful to others that may see it. It serves no purpose than being selfserving, which is not an admirable characteristic trait to have.

Re: Cliff jumping, Jet Skis, Horses and more
Papa Georgie... despite your sarcasm, he was not judged by "the most high and final arbitrators of good taste" i.e. Negril boardies, he is being judged by human beings, all of who have faults. He is being judged by mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, people who if they had lost a loved one would consider his comments hurtful. As i stated, not as a high and mighty boardie, but a human being, this is not the time or place for his comments. I am however surprised at your attitude.
-
Re: Cliff jumping, Jet Skis, Horses and more
Well yes, sarcasm can hurt. So without the sarcasm, Accompong merely did not
follow the boardie herd's taste for mawkish sentimentality. He said that.
He said he looked at it pragmatically. Its a point of view that's all.

Re: Cliff jumping, Jet Skis, Horses and more
All I can say is "WOW" Unbelievable

Re: Cliff jumping, Jet Skis, Horses and more
i may not agree with the way accompoong stated his feelings...but as someone whos been been involved in jam for a lot shorter time than him..(ie hes living there 30 yrs ) there is definitely a different attitude that local jams would think about on such a tragedy... not that a persons life doesnt matter or his family doesnt grieve..because they do feel these things very strongly... Local Jams deal with so much more crime ,senseless death and dying that the avg tourist would never hear about...it puts one death in jam in different light..
I'm not speaking for accompong..and no way taking this young mans death lightly..its a tragedy,,,,but in jam -am sorry to say its just another tragedy....mixed up with the many that happen thru-out that country(murder, rape, assault, thiefing, pedophilla, foreced prositutuon,etc,)-all crimes that so many go without any justice for the victim...
Again, my condolences to this you mans family and friends

LOL I'd say you hit the nail right squarely on the head that time Papa. I for one felt terrible when I heard about the death, but even being an experienced jumper I leave the high one at ricks to the pros and the impaired. I have lost a few friends to stupid things they did while drinking. Do I miss them? Almost every day. But they still acted stupid while impaired. Accompong was stating this same thing, just said far more eloquently. Some people look for anything to complain about. Some people speak from their heart and gut sometimes. Enough said
