please be careful of the chic v virus....scary stuff!!
Denge fever has similar symptoms and has been around for years…use spray and the island need education on not allowing water to pool and sit in the yard. N
Ja is a place I would never want to be sick...
The wife can not use off or most mosquito sprays, what does anyone else use in a case like this??
How about the Avon Skin So Soft, Bill?
We are bringing Repel Natural, Repel Lemon Eucalyptus neither contain deet. Also read on here about Shea Butter that's supposed to work. Someone else said a local restaurant owner took a lemon and spread it on them during dinner and they stopped getting bit, that gave credence to the lemon eucalyptus spray. Never tried any of this stuff but we are bringing it all to see what works. Don't really know if any of this is necessary or if all the hype is true. Really want to have a great time and not get sick. Off course a lot of this preparation will fall by the wayside once we get a buzz and start partying so who knows. Then again you can put all this crap on and get stung by a stingray, what can you buy that keeps them away?
I'm going to stop by REI and pickup some of this stuff before we head to Jamiaca:

Good lord, 98% DEET! This stuff better repel the higglers, as well as mosquitos.
I'm usually pretty lackadaisical with the application of bug spray and I usually get few bites but it's not a big deal to me. However, being down with flu-like symptoms for a few days can really put a damper on your vacation, so I'd rather be safe then sorry.
Thanks Lizardbeth i will tell her about that and also the Repel products. We have never had a problem except for the sand fleas now and then but like everyone say's,better safe then sick!
I am probably canceling my trip ..been going for too many years, don't trust the health system... I do not want to even take the chance of being "bent over". It is a state of emergency, after all.
Some people have reactions to deet i get a headache and feel strange, stranger than usual anyway
Deet is just so bad for you, get some on a camera or cell phone lens and you'll see. I fish the Everglades and Mosquito Lagoon in Florida and have had very good success with the following.
Lemon EUCALYPTUS
If you buy lemon eucalyptus as a liquid incense it is far cheaper than buying the oil, you can dilute the incense in baby oil or mix it with body lotion & apply. That way it is cheaper and probably better for your skin as with the oil it wasn't really designed for the skin but for oil burners.
Vicks VapoRup
I know it stinks but works great in keeping sand gnats, mosquitoes and ticks off your ankles and feet, you just need a little dab on your ankles (a little dab on a bite also relieves the itch)
Viamin C, take 2-3 times the recommended daily amount starting a couple days before traveling, mosquitoes HATE citrus an in an environment like Jamaica your perspiration will drive them away
Lavender and Eucalyptus Oils, just mix a little with water in a small spray bottle and take everywhere with you.
I have not had success with Skin So Soft, if you use most of the Natural Replants sold today, make sure you re-apply every 1/2 hour or so if you are perspiring, Hope this helps
Oh I know it's nasty, nasty stuff. I do a lot of outdoors stuff, hiking, backpacking, fishing etc. If you get the stuff on nylon it'll dissolve it, so I have to be careful around my tents (expensive silnylon) and lots of plasticy things. I think in light of the situation currently affecting the island, it's worth the trade-off, but that's just me.
Description of repellents from CDC website...
REPELLENTS FOR USE ON SKIN AND CLOTHING
CDC has evaluated information published in peer-reviewed scientific literature and data available from EPA to identify several types of EPA-registered products that provide repellent activity sufficient to help people reduce the bites of disease-carrying mosquitoes. Products containing the following active ingredients typically provide reasonably long-lasting protection:
DEET (chemical name: N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide or N,N-diethyl-3-methyl-benzamide). Products containing DEET include, but are not limited to, Off!, Cutter, Sawyer, and Ultrathon.
Picaridin (KBR 3023 [Bayrepel] and icaridin outside the United States; chemical name: 2-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1-piperidinecarboxylic acid 1-methylpropyl ester). Products containing picaridin include, but are not limited to, Cutter Advanced, Skin So Soft Bug Guard Plus, and Autan (outside the United States).
Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) or PMD (chemical name: para-menthane-3,8-diol), the synthesized version of OLE. Products containing OLE and PMD include, but are not limited to, Repel and Off! Botanicals. This recommendation refers to EPA-registered repellent products containing the active ingredient OLE (or PMD). “Pure” oil of lemon eucalyptus (essential oil not formulated as a repellent) is not recommended; it has not undergone similar, validated testing for safety and efficacy, is not registered with EPA as an insect repellent, and is not covered by this recommendation.
IR3535 (chemical name: 3-[N-butyl-N-acetyl]-aminopropionic acid, ethyl ester). Products containing IR3535 include, but are not limited to, Skin So Soft Bug Guard Plus Expedition and SkinSmart.
EPA characterizes the active ingredients DEET and picaridin as “conventional repellents” and OLE, PMD, and IR3535 as “biopesticide repellents,” which are either derived from or are synthetic versions of natural materials.

There is a product made by Sawyer that you use to treat your clothing which then lasts 4-6 weeks even through washes. It's permethrin, which is a fairly nasty chemical, but it works extremely well. It actually kills the buggers on contact. You spray your clothes, let them completely dry (this is important for safety) and you're good to go for at least a month.
And yet again I ask is there anyone out there that actually has gone to Negril or is there now that has contracted Chic V?
I sure would like to know
What!!!Cancel your trip?!?!?! Ok guys. Let's not get hasty.
I posted it once, let me post it again. The local clergy stated a nun who works as a nurse has seen hundreds of patients down there with people thinking they had Chic V. Out of the hundreds maybe 3 had it. Its just the media and local folk spreading paranoia.
Think of it like this: If you had friends from any other other country that cancelled there trip to America because they heard Ebola epidemic here in the states you would think them foolish, yes?
Just got back...a few bites not sick had a blast. Watch out for the JB though..now that **** will mess you up...
We have West Nile virus here in Ontario, Canada. This is a virus that also can kill you. It is also found in the USA. We also have Lyme's disease. We are always told to use insect repellent. This Chik-V reminds us to be extra vigilant.
I have been traveling to Negril for thirty years. Jamaica is a tropical island with billions of mosquitos. I have been on the island during every month and season of the year. I have never failed to see numerous mosquitoes in the Negril area , my wife has always had numerous bites and I have had more than one or two bites on each visit. I am amazed that anyone could report that they have never seen a mosquito in Negril or on the entire island of Jamaica. Chik-V is epidemic in Jamaica and is increasing in the western part of the island which includes Negril.I have friends from Mobay to Negril who are reporting confirmed cases of Chik-V affecting entire families and their neighbors. Ebola, West Nile and Lymes are not epidemic in the US or Canada so that is an entirely different scenario. And remember, the mosquitoes that carry the virus bite only in the day.
I'm really not trying to make light of this but i've asked several times on here for anyone whose actually gotten the virus while visiting and there is only one girl who says she had a confirmed case and that was a few months ago. Is there anyone that can dispute that? Why arent a bunch of people saying yea I went and got sick. Even on trip advisor which has a lot more visitors no one is claiming to have gotten sick. Just a lot of people who aren't there speculating.
Sorry but tourists who return home and become ill don't necessarily rush to post on this or any other forum regarding their health. In fact, only a fraction of travelers ever post for any reason on any forum. Even at that, I am aware of cases of Chik-V being reported by returning tourists. Chik-V will eventually peak in Jamaica and decline as more and more residents are exposed to the virus and become immune thus reducing those vulnerable. As the more rainy season subsides, the mosquito population will hopefully decline with some reduced risk. Tourists are not a stable group in Jamaica but rather a group that is constantly providing on each arriving flight new prospects with no immunity for the virus. Tourist are more likely to use repellant and their time on the island is rather brief. Still, I think that it is a matter of chance whether one is infected or not. Tourist may have less chance to be infected, but this is a chance that I am not presently taking.
I have been here 10 days now and have some bites - even though I have sprayed with Deep Woods Off @30% DEET. I am feeling OK as is my Buddy. We have 8 more days. There are mosquitoes alright :) swatted one buzzing my ear just a few minutes ago. I wish I had brought some itch stuff though - but not paying through the nose for it in Negril. Maybe I will dab some JB on the bites from the dregs in the bottle lol...that should shock the skin...it usually gets JB fed from the inside.
I highly recommend The No Mosquito Candle and rub on repellant by Starfish Oils. Highly effective and smells wonderful. Uses lemomgrass and eucalyptus oils among others. We always stock up on them when we come to Jamaica and family and friends ask us to bring this back as well. http://starfishoils.com/no-mosquito-...ral-body-spray . We usually get this at Devon House in Kingston. Here is there Kingston number to ask about retail locations 876-906-8045.
How have you heard about these cases? I am with you...not taking any chances
I have a few family members in Kingston that have had Chick - V. My mom wants me to cancel my trip but I told her no way. My dad will also be taking his regular trip in February to Kingston.
I'm a magnet for mosquitoes but I will make sure to get Avon Skin so Soft or Off spray plus Avon has a sunscreen with mosquito repellent. I will also take pain meds which I normally take with me anyways.
