Sorry to hear it got you. When did you get back? Were you diligent with bug spray and did you notice many bites? Thankfully, you didn't get sick till you got home!

probably a little slack with bug spray because very few bugs, mosquitos were around....sprayed well at dusk but not too diligent through the day

Not to be a spoiler sport but my specialists back here that dealt with it with me told me there is no proof of immunity after having it.

The Aedes aegypti mosquito carries the virus. It is a DAY feeding mosquito.
You need the repellant during the DAY

sure hope they are wrong...everything we have read says otherwise...would really reconsider my travel plans if threat of being that sick was part of my holiday...now im back to doing more research.....

According to the CDC website.."•Once a person has been infected, he or she is likely to be protected from future infections."
Here's hoping embury!!!!

Good news you are better! This really has me concerned as I ALWAYS get eaten alive...yikes I guess I MUST be pro-active with the DEET. I just ordered BUGGS Spray with 25% deet unscented and vanilla scented on amazon- we used it 2 years ago and not one bite and I did not smell like "deep woods off" Fingers crossed :)

Re: Chikungunya oh ya its real
That's why I canceled my trip for this year. .last 15 years we have been there for Xmas. Boy I am going to miss it..
-
Re: Chikungunya oh ya its real
This has me concerned. I'm planning on traveling to Negril in February with my mom who is currently taking chemo. She will get a 2 week break for our trip but I'd hate for her to get sick. I'll have her discuss with her doc.
-
Re: Chikungunya oh ya its real
While I am sure it is real, I just think some folks are more susceptible to the possibility of getting it.
My wife gets eaten alive every trip. She was using off with deet pretty heavily this trip, not many bites. I used off the first day, pretty much forgot about it after that, and zero bites the whole vacation. We have had so many trips where her legs look like she has been rolling around in thorn bushes, and if I am getting bit, there is zero reaction. One year, at pushcart for dinner, we were sitting 2 feet from one another, and the mosquitoes turned her into an all you can eat buffet. I got zero bites.
-
Re: Chikungunya oh ya its real
I have no doubt it is for real, but I agree with Hussyband, some people are more susceptible. I leave Sunday and I do not have any doubts about how much I want to go. I generally am not bothered much by bites, but I am taking deet wipes with me. Pon da cliffs, there has not been much trouble in my past trips. I hope that is the case this year. I am prepared. So, going to take the risk. Pray nothing will happen but I couldn't give up this trip up on a bet! To me, I have my flu shot which is a big deal this time of year...now, just ready to enjoy the moments of my vacation to the max. Life is always a chance, this one, I am willing to take. I need my annual trip to Negril as much as plants need water.
I am off on Sunday for fun in the sun. If by chance anything happens, you guys will be the first to know. Blessings to everyone and enjoy!

Re: Chikungunya oh ya its real
Luckily I also do not seem to be bothered by mosquitos.. I am prepared with plenty of spray and wipes which I will religiously during the day. I also purchased a few packages of these bracelets.. I have read mixed reviews about them but most claim that they seem to work, they are waterproof and are supposed to last up to 200 hours

Re: Chikungunya oh ya its real
I would definitely not take the chance

Re: Chikungunya oh ya its real
We still have not had Chikungunya....live here 24/7....been to Kingston twice a month for the last few months where it is more common..live in the country where the eradication/fogging hasn't been as prevalent as the beach areas or major cities like Montego Bay, Ocho Rios or even Negril....I'm a mosquito magnet....
we spray once in the morning on a fairly regular basis and this obviously seems to be working for us...it appears you need to be diligent with the mosquito spray!

begels,
Consulting her doctor can be the absolute best thing you can do. While Chick-V generally has symptoms of a bad flu, those with a weak immune symptom can face much worse symptoms. And please be sure that her doctor does research as this was until recently not known about in the western hemisphere.

Re: Chikungunya oh ya its real
Been home for a week. We got lucky. We made sure we sprayed every morning before leaving the room and again around noon, and as always at dusk.
Be vigilant. We ran into a few expats that had gotten the Chik-V and they all agreed, that it sucked.
-
Re: Chikungunya oh ya its real
As of Dec 5th, there's already been 74 cases in Mexico, some cases in Florida...looks like no matter where we go to vacation away from the cold, there's risk. Just have to be diligent with spraying.

Re: Chikungunya oh ya its real
There is a lot of info on the internet about Chikungunya. I was visiting my physician the other day and mentioned Chikungunya to him, as this has been mentioned to do on many of the sites. I ended up explaining to him what Chikungunya is. Prevention sounds like the best advise.

Re: Chikungunya oh ya its real
Friends just left and couple days later one was down with the aches and fever….not enough bug spray in the daytime, and spent a night in hotel before they moved them to room with screens on the window. I cannot say enough about inquiring about mesh on the windows! It is affecting everyone differently and certainly NOT everyone. Watch CDC for updated information...
-
Re: Chikungunya oh ya its real
I canceled. . Have you ever been to Negril? ..it is NOT the place to get really sick..I have been going for 31 years so I don't say this lightly..
-
Re: Chikungunya oh ya its real
Okay been home since nov 23 turned sick nov 25 still going to bed with heating pad ibuprofen. Shooting pains in arms and calves...numb fingers in morning...once I get moving I feel better but nights are painful. My right arm is the worst. Drs here not familiar with this at all. Tonite of bloodwork..not sure if I will get a 100% diagnosis or not but of 10 symptons I had all of them. I also not a mosquito magnet. Dont react to bites if I get them. This totally sucked and still does. Hoping pain is gone before my next negril visit...really hope I'm immune now or I would rethink my vacation plans

Re: Chikungunya oh ya its real
My dad just cancelled his trip to Kingston in February. Just about everybody he has spoken to has had Chick V from mild symptoms to very severe symptoms. I am still going Jan 30th and just plan to take extra precaution and spray down with Off throughout the day and night. There are no screens on the windows where I stay but I do use the AC.
I've read the reports on CDC and also information all over the web. The one question that I can't seem to find the answer to is how often do you use bug spray throughout the day and night? I read, before going out put on sunscreen then bug spray but if you are on the beach all day and in and out of the sea, do you spray every time you get out?
-
Re: Chikungunya oh ya its real
Wondering the same thing. I suspect every time you get wet or rinse off you would need to reapply. My deep woods off says nothing about being waterproof. I don't think I have ever seen a daytime mosquito in the sun on the beach.

My advice is not professionally based of course, but from living here daily and not getting chikungunya.
We live in a country area....we've been in Kingston quite regularly and for days at a time...
To prevent being bit....we've been spraying once in the morning and spray in the early evening if we are out and about...
If we've been in the sea or had an afternoon shower we've always reapplied.
We've also noticed that less and less people are contracting chik v in the Kingston area....as most have already contracted chik v and it can only be actively spread in its early stages. The eradication efforts around the island seem to be having a major impact on reducing the number of cases also.
-
Re: Chikungunya oh ya its real
I saw that embury when she was sick.. and she looked awful... even her tan was sucked away...... not a disease to be messed with...
-
Re: Chikungunya oh ya its real
Just to reiterate, we live here and have still not got it, we do apply mozzie spray in the morning and again in the evening. We have traveled all over the island, spending much time in the Kingston area during the ChickV infection height in October and early November. We never contracted it just as hundreds of thousands of others have not.
The island wide eradication efforts that were paid for by the state of emergency funds that became available have been doing much to stop the spread.
We know people who have had ChickV. For many, it acts and feels like a 3 day flu. First day you feel a little off, second day you cant get out of bed with fever and joint pain, and the third day you begin to feel better.
Others seem to have a type that lingers, you start feeling better but then pain returns to areas of your body that you previously had injured. Say you broke your ankle 20 years ago, pain will flare back up in that area and you can feel fine everywhere else. It is hard to say if it is a different strain or just effecting people differently because of the differences in immune systems. There seems to be very little obvious common factors.
We know thousands that have not contracted it, and the snowbirds we know who contracted it seemed to have gotten it almost immediately off the plane and were generally not using bug spray. It is not something you want to get, so use your mozzie spray often and reapply as necessary like when you get out of the water or after a shower.

Re: Chikungunya oh ya its real
On all of my trips to Negril, I ask housekeeping if I can use their bug spray. I spray the entire the room. I leave for a couple of hours. When I come back to my room, I see the mosquitoes on the floor. I spray myself all day with repellent. This method seems to help for me.
-
Re: Chikungunya oh ya its real
this is the latest in the states. Sounds like the prevention methods are working, so hopefully it will lead to a lower amount of cases:

Re: Chikungunya oh ya its real
We just returned from Negril, 12 days. I was worried about the Chick - V also and brought along lots of things to make me feel more comfortable and I'm happy to report none of us (16 in all) were affected. I brought along Eucalyptus/Lemon oil with my diffuser. I ran the diffuser in the morning in our room and it made a difference. One morning I did not use it and was bitten 3 times. I kept this oil as a stand by when Off with Deet was not with us. We also loaded up on vitamin C when we there. We brought tylenol and glucosamine in case someone got sick. We sprayed Deet every morning before heading to the beach and again before sunset. Be vigilant. Go on vacation! Since we did not need the tylenol or joint relief (glucosamine) we left it with friends to share if someone else needed it. It did not rain the entire time we were there. I read the weather is helping to reduce the number of mosquitos also/less or no standing water.
-
Re: Chikungunya oh ya its real
my guess is the fewer bites are due to the spraying. ironically begs you to spray less. so question: sun lotion prior to spray or vice versa? Id imagine spray last.
-
Re: Chikungunya oh ya its real
What type of diffuser? Sounds like it was electric.

Re: Chikungunya oh ya its real
I read sunscreen first then spray. What concerned me was the fact(?) that this combo make the deet absorb more. I used Repel non deet ( eucalyptus/lemon oil) over sunscreen during the day. This allowed me to apply it more often after swimming. Worked like a charm when we were there in November. Luckily for 10 days btwn the cliffs and the beach ,no bites. BTW.....found the Repel on Amazon.

Re: Chikungunya oh ya its real
Forgive me if this has been discussed. Is it OK to spray DEET based repellents on top of your sunscreen?

I put the sunscreen on and wait 30 minutes then the repellant.

Until they develop a vaccine, I would think that prevention would be the best route. Prevention is usually the better than the cure or post infection immunity, particularly since the long-term effects are not known. Research and choose your bug repellent and use wisely, and according to instructions. Manage those known risks, and enjoy the benefits, without locking yourself in a sterile room to avoid infection. And above all else, speak to you Health Care Professional about it, and the preventative measures they may recommend.
Cap, you say it's a day feeder. Is that ONLY in the daytime (dawn to dusk) for those mosquitoes? Or MOSTLY or USUALLY - meaning there is minimized risk dusk to dawn, as opposed to no risk?
And sunscreen then bug spray; reapply after going in the water. Got it. I'm ready!

Re: Chikungunya oh ya its real
M&G,
There have been studies done on Chick-V since its first diagnosed outbreak back in 1952 - over 60 years ago. This is from the World Health Organization:
"Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne viral disease first described during an outbreak in southern Tanzania in 1952. It is an RNA virus that belongs to the alphavirus genus of the family Togaviridae."
Long term effects are known. The reason the CDC says that an infected person is "most likely" immune is that over 60 years of studies have proved it to be true with this as well as other RNA viruses. They are saying "most likely" because they are essentially "covering their ass" so to speak. Just like mumps, chicken pox, etc, there have been rare exceptions to the rule and a few people have contracted these viruses more than once. A friend of mine growing up was written up in a medical journal because he caught chicken pox twice. But he was the exception to the rule - thus the interest in the medical journal.
