Will be staying at Coco LaPalm - first time not at AI.....Looking for any advice and tips.
Don't miss their nightly 'specials', if they still do that, that is! Manager's cocktail party, etc.
Stock up when the patty man and the fruit lady come by! We always brought one of the soft coolers for our beer. The bar will fill it up with ice for you. Have fun!
The girls at the front desk at Coco are always happy to break big bills for small ones; you'll need small bills - not all of the vendors have change
Happy hour at the main bar from 5-7 every night but Monday (Monday is the manager's cocktail party) - 2 for 1 beer, wine, rum & mixed drinks
Be sure to check out Best in the West across the road for jerk chicken
Have fun - Coco is a great property :)
Coco is our favorite place to stay on the beach. You'll love it there. Like tfw, we also bring a soft sided cooler with us. It's great for more than just drinks, I put my fruit in there as well as any leftover pork from Dean or patties. I attached a bottle opener to the cooler strap with a long bungee-type cord so it's always handy for those Red Stripes! Make sure you tip the person who gets your ice -sometimes if it's early and the bar isn't open one of the groundskeepers will get it for you.
I also bring various sizes of ziplock bags. A gallon size one is good for ice in the cooler if you make your own drinks. That way you know it's clean and doesn't get sand in it. We usually order pizza delivery from Ciao Jamaica one night, so any leftovers get sealed in bags before going in the fridge. If you drink coffee and like a particular sweetener, bring that for your room. I'm partial to Sweet & low, so I always have it.
Also bring insulated mugs for your beverages. Great for mixing your own drinks. Definitely check out Best in the West jerk across the street!
Hi Negrilgirl Coco is in a great location steps to all kind of great places. Here are a few
Chances: really awesome Pizza
Best of the west across road and down a little: great Chicken and pork
Charella: great breakfast
White Sands: two for one every day
That is just a few
The room we stayed in was the NICEST room we had ever stayed in. Really nice property. Room 333 said tree tree tree. LOL
Take time to make contact with Andrew Gibson. The very intense looking guard who works the beach and carries a big stick (depending on what stage of whittling it down he's in.) He has a heart of gold and we've found most consistently friendly person on the beach. Your stuff becomes his stuff when your on his beach and you take off walking. Housekeeping gals are a happy bunch. Take care of them early and they may leave those extra nice simple touches when you return to your room. Expect little from the WiFi if you want to stay connected. Coco is a great base camp to walk the beach from. Fend off the vendors with a "no thank you" or buy something cheap the first day and you can point to that the rest of your trip a say you already have one. It did seem that the beach entrepreneurs up and down the beach have become aggressive in their pursuit of your cash this last trip. Beers here are $5, Firefly to your right up the beach was $2.50 if you want to stretch your legs. Bottles of liquor are priced ok at the gift shop, mixing that with Tony the Juice guys (short guy always in ball cap, big grin) $5 a fifth pineapple from his morning rounds (he's off the beach by 11:00) works real well. Bring a insulated mug. Enjoy
As sweetnothingness said, the wifi isn't the best. Last couple of trips we've been on the Sandy Haven side of the property. Their wifi is strong and doesn't require a password, so we typically connect to that...
We were at CoCo first 2 weeks of November. They were just putting in a new wifi system at that time and it worked great all over the resort-even in all the guest rooms....We used to stay by the gazebo to pick up Sandy Haven, but should not be an issue anymore...
We loved the happy hour and it was also great to get to know other people. the beach was gergous brekfast was also good and you could upgrade it for a few more euro,we also ate at country country for brekfast and that was great.Loved everything about coco and will stay there again.
One good thing about CocoLaPalm, is they have fridges in the rooms... and Mikey's across the street is a good place to stock up on Red Stripes and bottle water!
Ive been giving Mikey a hard time about stocking ice, he promised an ice machine by time I returned, we will see..... lol
Do they supply coffee in the room for the coffeemaker or do I buy/bring my own?
its in the room~
Is there a place to exchange money nearby or is it best to go into Negril? How far is the cambio in Negril from CocoLaPalm?
They will exchange it (US$ anyway) for you at the front desk; not sure what kind of rate you'll get...
Miss G's sister and hubby check in on Saturday and we'll be hanging out there a bit for two or three days.
What would you like to know?
Cap
We take a taxi down to the turn around, exchange our money at the cambio, then hit the grocery store. Stock up red stripe, water, munchies. Back in the taxi and then Hit the beach.
Considering Coco for this June, bringing GF and her two adult children (18 & 19). All three are newbies.
1) How would you compare Coco to Travelers? (Some of the internet package deals are almost too good to pass up on Travelers).
2) Does Coco include a continental breakfast?
3) Any rooms or buildings too close to Norman Manley Blvd? Traffic noise would be a big problem.
Thanks,
VVHT
VVHT - we've only stayed at Coco once but it was quite nice. It does include a breakfast that I think was referred to as 'Continental' (my memory fails me, sorry). We used the allowance for that and upgraded for a full breakfast most days. Getting one of the beachfront rooms with a patio would be terrific.
Haven't stayed at Travelers, so I can't help with #1
2) Yes, continental breakfast is included. Your choice of juice, coffee or tea, banana bread (sooooo good), toast and some pastries. Some people get fruit instead of the bread I think? If you want to order something off the menu, they deduct $5 US from the bill
3) Sadly, yes. There are a few rooms right by the office. We were in 116 once (junior suite beside the office) and you could really hear the road noise. I wouldn't think they'd be full in June, so I'd just request a room as close to the beach as possible.
The superior rooms are the only ones with a covered patio, which are great in case of rain.
The beach at Coco is far superior to the beach at Travellers and is far better located, keeping in mind you want to stay on the beach.
location, location, location.......i started off staying at coco years ago....stayed at travelers and its a nice place as well but when i go down with newbes i always switch back too coco....its a better beach and more centrally located for food and other activitys......dont forget best in the west chicken right across the street down from a small store named mikeys where you can get sodas water and cold beer.......have fun!
Should also keep in mind the river sewage back-up into the ocean especially after a storm... I've seen it really really bad down by Travellers- but no trace at CCLP..Definitely something to consider...
That "run off" as you call it is from the morass, which naturally creates that color. Any "run off" from a storm would be from the farming up the hills beyond the Great Morass. The treatment plant was designed with hurricanes in mind - there is no "sewage back-up' unless there are incredibly heavy rains for several days as a hurricane would produce and a warning would be made. A storm would NEVER produce that.
Please lets keep the facts straight.
Here is a link explaining the issue that was started by someone at Coco...

Got it... Thank you for the clarification...
Thank you all for the information.

VVHT
How far is it from Coco to the cambio in Negril? Easy to walk to??
It's not a quick walk, but I've read there is a cambio next to Bourbon Beach. We always just taxi to the Scotia Bank at the roundabout.
Check out this map to help you with your planning: :)

Thanks for the map....I'm thinking about getting a phone to use while I am there. I see where the digicel store is but where is Lime located? Is there really any difference in the two companies?
I haven't dealt with Lime before....just know that you get a good signal in Negril with Digi....the lime store is across the street though I believe...
The Lime store across the street from Digicel, upstairs at the far end of the plaza where the ValueMaster is.
