* * * * * * ~~ ~ ~ Languid Days, the Green Flash and Star Filled Nights ~ ~ ~ * * * *
This trip I would love to see another green flash. Just one would do me.
I saw my first two green flashes – ever – during my last reach. I wrote about it in my Negril.com blog last season (Sunsets, Rum, Sand and Gizzadas). Up until that point I was a sceptic. I thought that ‘The Green Flash’ that I’d heard so much about was maybe a rum-fueled apparition. Or maybe something that you’d see after you’d been staring at the sun for fifteen minutes. Of the hundreds and hundreds of sunsets that I’d watched – nary one green flash did I see. But last February I joined the Green Flash brethren and I put a tick beside the ‘Green Flash’ entry in my mental bucket list.
I’ll always remember it. Archie called it. He was standing right beside me up on the White Sands sun deck. “Here it comes”, he said, pointing at the small crescent of sun that was rapidly sinking into the flat water on the western horizon. “Three! Two! One! . . . BLAM!”
And there it was. The Green Flash. Yup. No doubt about it. It was cool, but it wasn’t what I expected. We cheered our good fortune and clinked bottles.
But that was last year. What about this year?
Another trip to Negril begins Saturday. Those of you who read my blog last year might recall that it was an epic trip (well, I thought it was - and I held back  ). Who knows what beach-side adventures the next six weeks will hold?
As usual I’ve had an internal debate as to whether I would post this year. You see, posting a trip report is a commitment. Posting a real-time trip report is even more challenging. It’s a bit of a flier. What if there is nothing interesting to write about? It becomes a beast that must be fed. Ask anyone who has done it.
To make it worse, I’m a little OCD about my prose. I don’t feel comfortable posting things that I haven’t had the chance to mull over and edit several times. But, for better or worse, I’ve once again succumbed to my Negril.com habit.
I get in late Saturday. Maybe have an update on Sunday night or Monday.
No promises, it could be boring as hell. Maybe I’ll just end up rambling. We’ll see how it goes.

I'm glad to read that you are going back, after last year I wasn't sure. I've had trips like that, although nothing of what you experienced. So, you just ramble all you like in your writings, I'll be happy to read it all. And I sure hope you get to see another 'Green Flash'.

We will be missing some people this year; Weed-Eye, Likkle Jimmy, The Doc, Baby Face and Bob-FM (always on broadcast), but the Crew will include Shrek, Cappy, J.T., The Triplets, Zee, Google and of course, Bea.
I finished packing today - my suitcase weighs 49.6lbs. Pheww! New items in the suitcase this year: door stoppers and mosquito coils.
Running errands this morning I found myself listening to Robert Nesta. Sure sign that my mind has already gone south.
Kim, I should do a piece on you, but Rob might have to censor it a little. We'll talk. Rum first. See you and Kathy at Sunnyside.
PGW - it will be good to see you and Uncle Johnny - no way I can keep up though. Any more dental work happening this year?
Rob, it is good to be back, I can feel the juices starting to flow.
It is so freakin cold here in Ottawa today - I can't wait to get the hell out of here.
Should be a fun romp.

Looking forward to this one. Pooper and I are flying back home after ten glorious days in Negril. One mosquito bite the whole time, my last night of course. And I too thought the green flash was a myth, until I finally saw it this week taking in a wonderful sunset.
Enjoy your time Kahuna.

Booger and Pooper - It's too bad we didn't cross paths this year:(
LJ, Bluez and Bossman - thanks for the greetings :)
Day Uno
I woke this morning to birdsong coming from the direction of the Jamaican apple tree just off my deck. Then, a little further off, I heard the Macaws, Sinbad and Tiki, screeching the morning in. But I’m getting ahead of myself.
Yesterday I went from -26C with a brisk wind from the north battering me as I scraped snow from my driveway, to +26C while walking the beach in shorts and tank top.
It was a quick, smooth ride. Ottawa (Winter Hell) to MBJ in 3 hours and 40 minutes. I rode down on a rocket ship; I love the carbon age. Bea is out in Vancouver visiting family and will be coming later.
The Customs Hall was empty when we arrived at 7:00PM. I was number three to the counter. Soon I had my bag and was standing in the warm, humid breeze waiting for the driver to bring the van around. A couple of road pops along the way, a quick stop at the airport cash machine and I was loaded and ready when we rolled into Negril.
In the room I unpacked my bag to the point where I located my sandals. I changed into shorts and tank top and struck out for the beach. It was full dark but the moon, directly overhead and almost full, cast a tight, sharp shadow on the sand around my feet. It reflected off the curl of the waves just before they broke on the shore. The night sky, in spite of the glaringly bright moon, was gloriously awash with stars. Orion stood prominently, solemnly watching over Long Bay.
It was 10:00PM. I walked to Sun Beach, it was closed, all the bottles put away. So I went down to Sunnyside. It was packed. The music was pumping. I said Hi to Robert and Odeon. They were really busy keeping people supplied with drinks. Odeon has filled out since last year, he’s put on some muscle and is starting to look like Robert.
On my walk back to my room I was propositioned twice. Huh. I crashed early and slept well, probably because I brought my favorite pillow down with me.
Notwithstanding the title to this blog, today was not a ‘Languid Day’. I was busy all day. I went for a morning swim, unpacked and arranged my room, walked a lot, met people and got caught up. I made a trip to town for supplies, then went up to the Couples Gym to set up a gym membership for the next six weeks.
Later, I checked my ATM receipt from last night - $5.60JMD for a withdrawal! WTF!? Oh, right! Banks don’t make enough money.
Super Bowl tonight. There are going to be parties all up and down the beach.
It's really good to be back!

Sorry we missed you as well. Regarding the pillow situation, it made more of an impact my last trip than ever before. I think I'll be hauling down my Japanese buckwheat pillow going forward. Nothing on Earth will give you a better nights sleep, pillow that is.

Tuesday Update
Sorry on the tardiness, but I’ve been out looking for my groove. Haven’t found it yet.
The weather is here, I wish you were beautiful. Really, it’s classic Negril weather, clear, hot and calm. The waters of the bay are flat. It is so nice to swim the buoy line without having jet skis ripping by 10 feet away.
On my swim this morning I was tooling along, in the bubble/swoosh zone, when I noticed a little piece of seaweed floating by the right side of my face. Normal thing. But it was still there several strokes later. I looked a little closer and saw that it was actually a little fish, about two inches long, who had decided to accompany me. He stayed with me, tucked right beside my cheek, until I finished. Cute.
It’s February, so the beach is packed. On my walk this morning I ran into several old timers, including PGW, who got in during the rain last night. He’s only here for a week, but will be back soon. Why doesn’t he just move here?
So I was in the Value Master looking at rum. I saw a jug (1.75 Liters) of Appleton there for $3,160.00JMD. When we were in Florida in December I bought the same size for $17.50US in Winn Dixie. Can anybody explain why Jamaican rum is cheaper in Florida than in Jamaica?
The Super Bowl was great. Lots of people all up and down the beach. I was with Google. We watched the 1st half at White Sands and the second while reclining in beach lounges at Sandy Haven. It was fun and the right team won, too.
- Sea Splash has replaced their thatched roof with some plastic looking tile.
- Country Country hasn’t yet cleared away the rubble from the burned down restaurant. There is a fence hiding it.
- CoCo La Palm has a new ‘motel style’ row of rooms that have been constructed where the older section of the resort used to be.
- the beach is really wide
- the sidewalk project has re-started, but the work is being done up by Ozzies. Looks like they plan to work from the north.
Bear with me a bit until I find my groove, I know it’s out there . . .
I need to get my camera out and post some photos.

Thanks for the updates! I read in another post that they had rebuilt the old bar right at the water (not referring to the new restaurant). Is that in a different spot then?

The new bar is where the bathroom was, directly next to room 515. Do yourself a favor and do not ever book 515, unless you want noise till 10:30-11 at night and at 5 in the morning. The new bar is nice, but farther from the wata compared to the old bar. At least they left some beach in case the sand moves again.

I be happy to meet you. I'll be here until mid March. I walk by NTH almost everyday - not hard to spot: old dude, 6'2", buck ninety-five, camo full brim hat, looks lost. Just call me over.
