Jerk shacks in Negril
Hello all. I'm new to this board, but not to Negril. I've been traveling to Couples Swept Away for 15 years, usually twice a year. I eat at Ossie's, Best In The West, and the Red Dragon every trip, as well as several places on 7 Mile Beach.
I'm looking for additional recommendations. Thanks.

Re: Jerk shacks in Negril
3 Dives on the west end next to Xtabi is fantastic!

Re: Jerk shacks in Negril
Stop at Bigga's in Green Island on the way in or out of Negril

Re: Jerk shacks in Negril
Welcome aboard! Sounds like you hit up a lot of the right places. I would try 3 Dives and Eddie's De Bar on the West End.
On another note, since you are already a seasoned Negril traveler, have you thought of skipping CSA and trying someplace like Idle Awhile? It think it would be a better value, since you have the itch to explore.

Hey Ricky,
If U are a 15 year veteran then I am sure U have visited Marshall, Steppa side, and his barrel of tricks across from Roots Bamboo ~5:00p until sold out every day except Sunday. The combination of juicy & spicy chicken - "every time" - and his gregarious nature make it a memorable experience.

Re: Jerk shacks in Negril
Mike_D - I've walked in and out of most of the resorts on 7 Mile Beach and I doubt there's anything that would pull us away from CSA. Just can't beat the all-inclusive, couples only, no children vibe.
We'll be back on 4/17 and I'm going to try 3 Dives and Steppa Side.
Just some history here...
My first trip to Jamaica was in 1982 - Couples Jamaica in Ocho Rios - where I met jerk chicken for the first time and got hooked. Spent a day in Boston Bay and ended up with a jerk dry rub recipe I've been using ever since. I competed in the Jamaican Jerk Festival in Ft. Lauderdale many years ago and took two second-place finishes and a third. I've jerked everything from chicken, pork, beef, and fish to cole slaw and chocolate chip cookies. Around our house, if chicken is for dinner, you can bet it's going to be jerked.

Jerked chocolate chip cookies, interesting.

Tony's Jerk Barrel (next to the No-Limit Bar) on cliffs ~~

Re: Jerk shacks in Negril
This is the original dry rub recipe, given to me on a 3x5 index card in August 1982.
Boca Boys Jerk Rub Recipe - use this on anything you want to jerk, even fish!
4 tablespoons Ground allspice
4 tablespoons Dried thyme
4 tablespoons Ground Scotch Bonnet Pepper
2 tablespoons Freshly ground black pepper
2 tablespoons Ground sage
1 tablespoon Ground nutmeg
1 tablespoon Ground cinnamon
2 tablespoons Garlic powder
4 tablespoons Brown Sugar
1 cup dried Chives
For chocolate chip cookies, use any recipe you wish and just add 1/2 to 1 full teaspoon of Jerk Rub to the batter. For cole slaw, add 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon.

Never had a bad meal at Erica's on the West End. But our favorite is Sweet Spice. The conch in brown sauce is unbelievable.

Re: Jerk shacks in Negril
Fawnridge,
So you have stayed at Couples 20 or more times? Wow, that's enogh cash to just buy a place in Negril. I know in my 20 trips I've spent enough to start thinking of buying. I normally go twice a year as well. Btw.. Thanks for recipe.

Re: Jerk shacks in Negril
noproblem - I've been to three of the four Couples resorts a total of 31 times since 1982. I've probably spent enough to buy a nice vacation home in Jamaica. But who takes care of it when I'm not there? And who's going to cook and clean while we are there? I'm a house husband. My wife works at Home Depot as a kitchen designer. I've got a software business that I run from home or the Boca beach or my room at CSA. But mostly from home where I cook and clean and maintain an elaborate garden. When we're on vacation I don't want to do anything besides relax.
Trust me, even if I could afford the vacation home, it's too much hassle.

Re: Jerk shacks in Negril
Besides those mentioned, I like Bourbon Beach. If you like jerk, consider a trip to Boston Beach for the best jerk. On The Border Jerk and Scotchies are two other very good jerk stops as well as a place just before Mandeville whose name escapes me.

Re: Jerk shacks in Negril
Pork Pit in MoBay very good too, close to the airport, not out of the way at all.

Right on. I agree with you on the couples-only, no children vibe. We look for the same experience on the cliffs. Personally, I don't think my wife and I would get our money's worth staying AI. We enjoy eating at different restaurants each day and we don't really do a whole lot of activities (aside from walking and swimming).
And thanks for the jerk recipe!

I ate at Jimmy's Pork Pit in Mobay nearly 20 years ago. Is it the same one?
Is Bourbon Beach still in business? I heard they had a fire and closed the place.
The sauce on the right is from Bourbon Beach, the one on the left is Ossie's.
Here's a bunch of us who walked up from CSA to eat at Bourbon Beach in October 2009.

Kristine - Yes. Paulette, the cook, sells it for around $10 a bottle Bring her an empty Wata bottle and she'll fill it up. I take home six bottles every time we go.

Ossie's hot sauce....... proceed with caution. Good if you like it hot. I personally like Ossie's jerk pork with the red sauce. Plus, Paulette is a sweetheart and a longtime friend.
Soon come can't come soon enough......2 more sleeps!

Ossie's is on Manly Blvd, 100 yards south of Couples Swept Away or 1/2 mile north of Best In The West / Coco LaPalm. You can see the old south lobby of Swept Away in the upper left.

Directly across Norman Manley Blvd from Donaldson's Inn and Ossie's Top Taste Restaurant aka Miss Madge's (same family owns all three properties). Ossie also has room rentals adjacent to the Jerk Center. Miss Madge's is also a great dinner option. Some of the best food on the beach road and very reasonable prices. Fried Red Snapper, King Fish and Chicken Chop Suey are my favorites.
Soon come comes tomorrow..........

While you're doing as little as possible except hitting the jerk shacks, we'll be sampling the non-AI style for the first time a couple of doors down at Negril Palms. After a week there, we'll mosey on over to our more familiar Swept Away digs for a week.
Maybe we can hit the jerk shacks together once or twice...
At least...Maybe see you 'pon de beach, mon!

Chris - we're at CSA from 4/17 to 4/26 this trip. I'm easy to spot. I'll be on a lounge chair with a drink and headphones.
