Trip Report.....Day 1....2/21
First off, let me apologize in advance for my lack of technical ability....I can't seem to upload my pics onto my computer as of yet let alone onto the forum here....When the kinks are worked out I'll be sure to follow suit...If you haven't yet, checkout Negril Boardies on Facebook where I've posted a slew of videos....including some for Calico Jack's....Look up Tim Keefe...
Back to the report....We've all awoken at some point (or didn't sleep) for an early flight...I won't belabor you all with that...I will say I was grateful to get Club Mobay....I had an early arrival for MoBay...well, noon....but before most flights get there...It saved me 20 minutes but you can't put a price tag on those eager moments of anticipation so it was well worth it...I skipped the welcome beverage because to get a bottle of beer, I'd have to sit in the lounge..I've done plenty of that in my time ...A 'to go' beer was in an 8 oz cup...No thanks! I see my buddy Dwayne (Nicoy Smith 876-376-1458) awaiting and I know he'll have a cooler filled to the brim for me. I've known Dwayne for years.
After catching up and swilling a few, we stop by his girl Nadine's shop in Green Island so I can say 'hello'. Of course, the sub situation is of critical importance and Dwayne knows my high American standards for such things sub related. Once secured, we headed off to Negril...Checked into The Jamaica Tamboo....I knew it was going to be a special week when I was told Luciano would be playing later. Wow! I laughed at the 'supposed' start time of 10:00.....Knowing Jamaica as I do, I knew they left in one too many zeroes...lol...
I'm a beach walker...day and night....Some don't suggest that, but I'm only here to tell my experience...I never get bothered but some of my local friends tell me it's because of my 'ganster' look....I laugh it off....Stopped at all my favorites waiting for the show to start....Yellowbird...Sunnyside....Tony's Hut....First sunset of the trip at White Sands....Then back to the tamboo to chill, eat some dinner and nap before the show....Dwayne and Nadine show back up at the tamboo at 11 to see the show....He was so excited to see Luciano!!!!!!! A lot of people were somewhat reticent, however, because Sizzla was a No Show week prior at Roots....We all got a good chuckle at 115 AM when we heard a voice over the microphone.....'He's here...he's just changing!' LOL.....He came out and rocked the house for an hour straight....fully demonstrating his leg kicks and passionate energy..
At this point, it's been almost 24 hours....Time for TimmyMon to go to bed....Share the rest soon....What a wild yet ever so relaxing week....
It's crazy how SLOW time goes by in Negril, isn't it?

Re: Trip Report.....Day 1....2/21
I sat here and typed forever...with some pretty damn good material if I may add...and hit the wrong damn button and lost it all!!! Man that ticked me off....still does but gonna give it another whirl...back here in the cold on my day off waiting for my buddy to grab me for a beer...Anyway, at the very ripe, young age of 39, I vividly recall the days of the 90s when we partied all day at the Parrot and hit the Samsara for the shows...Ziggy, Yellowman, Maxipriest etc...Point is, Luciano kept me up late...I'm more of an early riser and bed by midnight...if I'm lucky....First thing I do is get outta my room at Tamboo and hop in the ocean...or do I sub it? Let's just say they're amongst the first two priorities of my daily life in Jamaica...After a nice Jamaican breakfast, I head out with the headphones on. My ambitious and lofty goal of waiting til noon for my first Red Stripe is rarely met. Today is about 10:30 which seems to be my average...From here, it's off to the races...My local friend Dwayne thinks I drink like 30....Who counts anyway?
Well, yesterday I left and went right. Today, it's left's turn. As I proceed on my journey to absolutely nowhere, I peek by the Bar B Barn. I'm told John and Betty, friends from last year's Boardie Bash, were back. I didn't see them but would a few days later on a similar destination-less walk. I past Traveller's and continue down....pop up and have a beer at the Corner Bar....After all, I am getting ready for Lenbert and the gang to scoop me up at the Tamboo at 235....
Remember last year? Boardie Bash? 2 buses...I was looking at Groove's report before I left and saw pics of a bunch of us....Funny....Anyway, here is the quick synopsis.....1.Sunset on the Cliffs(best Bob mural ever) 2. Some bar across from Canoe (Forgive me!) 3. Horizon West (cool joint...nevah been before) 4. Xtabi (you know the drill) 5. is actually #2 and I screwed up the order...This was Palm Court Sports Bar (pool tables) 6. Sir D (TimmyMon's favorite bar) 7. closed it out at The Negril Escape....As usual, met some fascinating individuals and the night was peppered with laughter. Everyone seems to be from Wisconsin and Canada. I was the unique northeastern representative...therefore, the only die hahd Pats fan....Whatever happened to Deflategate anyway? Hmmm....Sorry...Now that I have your attention....Had to...Anyway...
Back to Tamboo for Red Stripe refill...throw on the phones and back to the beach....right again.....Night time....The thing I am comfortable with here in Negril is how I can be both in my own world....and my own zone....and be very well cognizant of all my surroundings....I make it down to Seaplash...Who knows how many stops I make....I think I pop into Boat Bar for a bit....Time to hea back
Having a blast but the total Jamaican relaxation vibe hasn't yet hit. I know it's imminent. I can feel it.
Soon Come
and soon come more tomorrow
If I hit the wrong button again Im gonna be pissed

Re: Trip Report.....Day 1....2/21
Where were we? Oh yeah, it's Monday morning. I commence my day as I usually do. A morning swim followed by some sub action on my patio overlooking the ocean at the Tamboo. I can't say enough good things about the Tamboo. I paid around $80 a night....Clean room with great table TV (Yeah, yeah, yeah....we aren't here to watch tv! Usually only comes on at end of night !) They also have a breakfast included that's a 'real' breakfast and none of this muffin with a piece of toast and juice crap. I'm getting sidetracked as I oft do.
I had breakfast with my neighbors and new friends Dave and John. Dave has the pleasure of staying 6 weeks....Lucky guy....He fixes furnaces in Canada....think Saskatoon? and John works with STS....Student Travel Services....Obviously, they were huge years ago. I remember those Spring Break Parties at Risky Business and Tamboo...Turns out John helped organize all of them...Funny....Anyway, today the headphones go on and I go right. It's about 10:30 ish, again, and I am rather certain I'm ready for a Red Stripe. I head right out of the Tamboo and make stop #1 The Yellowbird. I met an interesting couple. He was a car dealer in Canada and she was a Columbian singer. We had a few drinks and a few laughs. I told them how I'd be at the Drifters on Wed for Luddy's show and I hoped to see them again....Never happened, but we all know that happens in Negril often...Sometimes you meet the coolest people and have every intention of getting their info....but sand gravity, sub activity and Red Stripe consumption often get in the way of this.....
Next stop is Sunnyside Bar to see Maureen. I remember the For Real Days. The Vibe is so similar. The picnic tables out front are packed as well as the bar. She has the cheapest Red Stripe on the Beach! at 170J. in my mind it's ingenious. It brings the crowd in who in turn order all sorts of other drink. I proceed to pound a few there before continuing on. I pop in to see Grace at Tony's Hut then head on down to White Sands for their Monday Red Stripe Special....2 for 400....This one guy at White Sands was hammered and insisted I was his old from Harvey from Kentucky. I kept talking long enough for him to realize there is quite a significant disparity in the way those from Kentucky and those from Boston speak....I finally convinced him with a few more 'cahs'
Gotta head outta White Sands and head back to Tamboo. I met a couple of guys and their girlfriends from Norway at Luciano the other night and we are meeting up to go on the Ya Mon Catamaran Sunset Cruise....Great deal...$50 for all you can drink (bottles!) dinner and snorkeling....It takes off outside the Boat Bar....We popped in the Boat Bar for their live show before we took off...It was pretty cool seeing this cool reggae band do U2....Pretty Cool
Cruise is outstanding. One caveat they neglect to tell you in the 'all you can drink' part is that no alcohol is served untilafter the first snorkeling spot...AKA almost 45 minutes....Whatever...I made up for that later and I've been on cruises in the past with crappy draft beer and they actually gave you bottles which, like I said, is a total bonus. We snorkeled for a bit and started thowing em' back. I love being on the water and seeing the resorts from the boat....It's always really neat passing the Blue Cave Castle....I got a lot of cool videotape...We continue on to Rick's, do some awesome cave snorkeling and jam to the loud reggae on the way back. Jerk and rice served. By the end of the sunset as we headed back to the Boat Bar, I probably had like 10 beers...That's why I think it was such a great deal...Factor in the diner and the snorkeling,,,,and it really can't get much better....
Pop into the Boat Bar for a few after the voyage...Met some buddies for a late dinner at Kuyaba....then off to Mom's to finish the night.....Another great day in my favorite place on Earth
That vibe....That Jamaican vibe I've come to know over the years...is settling in. I'm excited about tomorrow. I have a lot of fun things planned..
Can't wait to tell you about them.
Have a great night, everyone

Re: Trip Report.....Day 1....2/21
I wake up Tuesday morning. Today is a big day. I don't need to be redundant anymore relative to my rituals upon awakening.....I do my usual 'get wet' and subsequent 'get baked' lol....Breakfast at the Tamboo....Today was the the day most of Mr Black's children left....Mr Black owns the place and has 29 kids....yep, that's right, 29.....I think 18 or so were there....Really nice people and they all seemed to enjoy each other's company. I met Sean and his 9 year old son.....and the son was the nephew to his 5 year old uncle....I know, you gotta think about that one a bit....With 29 kids, anything is possible.
Dwayne picks me up at 10ish. The plan is to start on the West End and start at Barney's Hummingbirds. After an $18 entrance fee (not including my local friend!!) I quickly decided I'd find a hummingbird elsewhere. I've made a series of videos so far and posted many on Negril Boardies on FB and soon Youtube. I've been to the Lighthouse a million times but wanted a video so Dwayne and I met Mr. Johnson and we scaled it. What a view. Words will never do it justice so I won't attempt to.
It's 11 ish....We hit Sir D's....My favorite bar in Negril....and of course we are the only ones there. We have a few beers...I take my customary video....and now it's on to Half Moon Beach. I heard about Calico Jack's Pirate Shack and I'm ready to check this place out.
For those not familiar with Half Moon, it is a private beach only 15 minutes outside of Negril. It's a $5 per person entrance into the beach and only a $5 roundtrip boat fare to Calico Jack's which is probably a 10 minute voyage mas or menos. The Red Stripe was 400J....I didn't mind since I think I paid more at the Pelican Bar...They had an outstanding lunch, however, and was quite reasonable for US standards at $10....A plate full of chicken, rice and a great pasta salad....Upon arrival, it was just Dwayne and I but soon others showed up....More Wisconsinites....We chat football and hang out a couple hours....There are some little kids on the island now so I wander around to ensure that my sub activity stays as clandestine as possible. I loved the place and posted a great video! Like Pelican, though, it is really only the type of place to spend a few hours....Things add up quickly! Then, though, when don't they?
Dwayne has a 5 PM pickup in moBay so I head back to homebase at the Tamboo. I stop at the usual haunts....ran into some Boardies at Sunnyside and then on to White Sands for Sunset...
I head on to the Boat Bar to meet up with my longtime local friend Jeff. We party there for a bit. One of the Norwegian guys I had gone on the Ya Mon cruise showed up. I felt bad for the guy. He went to go take a leak and must have mis-positioned. Apparently, his flow ricocheted off something else (perhaps the wall) and redirected right back at his shorts. Upon returning to the bar from the urinal, he had a distinct line of urine....almost formed perfectly with a 2 to 3 inch width....going from his belly to his thigh...The locals laughed at him but I was glad when I saw his friend pop up so I didn't have to escort the guy home....though I would have....
I meet my friend Amber at Bourbon and actually make it til midnight....Time for a sub and a little chillax time!
Tomorrow is Luddy Samms and the Drifters, after all!

Re: Trip Report.....Day 1....2/21
To think how many more followers I'd have had I learned to post the f*%$#& pics....I will trudge on, though...The writing is good for me
Wednesday is the day of walking..Man, I just kept going....After breakfast, I left the tamboo and kept going....I stopped at the usual spots for Rec Stripes but this time kept going....I walked through the all-inclusives to the end....rather than cut through the path towards Bloody Bay, I opt to turn around and head the other way....The myriads of stops along the way were contingent upon my Red Stripe level at the time....If the stop concurred with a regular joint, so be it....if it meant trying something new, I sure did ....I stopped at countless places I couldn't name...both on this journey...all week...and my whole life in Negril, actually
Time stops for me in Negril....It's only 11:00....I am ready to see Luddy Samms at Drifters for like my 7th or 8th time....Show doesn't 'start' til 2:30 with Luddy usually on at 3....I stop at home base, the tamboo, to refresh the sub-life....On I go...I go past Canoe and wind up stopping and chatting with a couple. I add to my endless wristband collection....many of which are faded from the years...and she puts that special Jamaican almond oil on me....I'm pretty dark instantly
Luddy rocks the house at Drifters. From his own famous hits (Under the Boardwalk) to the hits from the day (My Girl) I gotta say.....it's always the best thing I do...I wound up going back Friday...
Wednesday marks my last day at the Tamboo. I totally screwed up with my reservation. I'm either retarded or ingest to many subs...or perhaps a combination of both....but I booked the Tamboo Sun-Thurs and Sunset on the Cliffs Fri and Sat...Only problem is, I booked 'til' Thursday not 'including' Thursday
I'm homeless for a night! So I think
Roots Bamboo, here I come last minute!
See ya tomorrow

Re: Trip Report.....Day 1....2/21
Let's see...a sub in one hand and a Sam Adams in the other....what better way to reminisce of one of my whackier days in Negril thus far...Unfortunately, today is the day I check out of the Tamboo. I totally effed up with my booking. I booked the flight then a few days later booked the Tamboo Sat-Thurs....I always like to close it out on the cliffs ....think I had a sub too many....and came back and booked Sunset on the Cliffs for Fri and Sat and leave Sunday.....What I didn't realize until the night before I left was that I hadn't booked a hotel for Thursday....Wickid pissah! as we say in Boston....which is being sarcastic because 'wicked pissah' in Bostonian language roughly translates into something positive.......Anyway, Expedia offered me this $25 coupon....and Roots was only $56 for the rustic cabin.....so for 31 bucks I figured I could 'rough' it with just me, the bed, the ceiling fan and the toilet. Let the new chapter begin!
I just don't wanna leave the Tamboo. I can't say enough great things. They are assured my business when I return in October. Today was a day I just wanted to lounge around. A guy Sascha from Saskatoon and his girl were hanging with me all day. They were impressed with my sub quality. As Cousin Eddie said in the original National Lampoon's Vacation.....'Nuthin' but the best!' My friends at the Tamboo afforded me the opportunity to check out late and I took full advantage. I cleaned up my room....emptied the sub drawer....tipped June the lovely housekeeper...and made it on my way to Roots Bamboo.
It was a unique experience checking in at Roots. The older gentleman at the desk kept insisting I should have been here the day before and asked to see my 'paper' I assumed he meant my expedia printout but I explained I only had it on my phone. He attempted to glance and threw his arms up...'To hell with it' he probably said....He told me to follow him, which I did and he gave me my key. I was now in my rustic heaven for the night.....I was afraid to turn on the ceiling fan....because when I did, this thing went absolutely buck wild....it looked as if it could come unhinged at anytime....All I could think about was sleeping in the middle of the night and that ceiling fan becoming unhinged and chopping something off....That's just not the way I wanna go out so it looks like I'll be sweating tonight....On a side positive note, however, I was impressed with the bathrooms and shower....Very impressive!
I hang at the bar at Roots for a while. my good friend (who also happens to be my driver) picks me up at 4 PM. Tonight I am taking him and his girl Nadine to Canoe Bar for the live steel drums show and dinner. Nadine isn't going to be ready for a while. She runs a shop in Green Island so Dwayne and I are ready to chill.
I hadn't been to Whoopie's Hammock Park in quite some time...I was unaware of Dennis' tragic death...Sad....I love that spot so much, though...I remember when the goats roamed freely....Dwayne was floored again...He didn't comprehend how he was a driver in Jamaica....and it took the Jamerican TimmyMon to open his eyes to Sir D, Calico Jack and Whoopie's....Anyway, at Whoopie's, Dwayne and I meet this Canadian man and his wife. I'd be lying if I said I remembered his name, but for the eff of it, let's just call him Wilbur. Well, Wilbur smuggled 30 subs in some air tight compartment...He got a little too technical for me...I manage a supermarket....well, I got to try one of these....I do well in the sub category relative to quality but we all know nothing grown outdoors rivals what we have to offer...We subbed it and he gave me one for the road....I was grateful....but far more grateful for being at Whoopie's again
We grabbed Nadine and I was lucky enough to run into Dennis and Betty. They were leaving Canoe and we got their front row seats for the steel drum band during dinner. What a hoot! We ordered all sorts of appetizers and beer. I think I may have given the band some competition regarding entertainment, however....I was trying to get the ultimate photo op....Dwayne with my camera as I leaned back on the rail, hovering backwards so the band can get in the picture....but.....Houston, we have a problem! I leaned back however I reached the point of no return. In a desperate last bid to save face and pull myself up, I reached my foot up against the bottom on the rail...If only I could cup my foot enough, my sheer leg strength would surely propel myself back up....
Wrong....I leaned back...and....Man Overboard.....I think I actually did a flip as I fell on my ass... I took out a couple rungs from the deck....Ask anyone that was there Thurs 2/26....I'm the guy that fell off the deck....Good news is, other than the welt on my foot....I was Ok so went back up and ordered a few more beers...Only me!
After dinner, I head back to Roots. My normal routine, had I been at the Tamboo, would be to throw on the headphones and go. I like the idea of coming home to cable or internet or something at the end of the night. The older I get the less I am fascinated by the late shows at Bourbon or whatever. They're awesome shows, however, I usually haven't been staying up that late....Tonight, though, I didn't have much to come home to. I knew it was going to be a late night for lack of anything else to do I didn't even have a book to read!
I actually walk back over to the Tamboo to see if my buddy Dave is there. He's not around so I start chatting up a Rasta I met earlier in the week. I will have to ask Dave his name as I don't wanna misquote it. I had met him a few days earlier when he made a beautiful flower bouquet for a birthday girl from wild flowers at the tamboo....I asked him to take me to Burger King and then we hit up the corner bar...I know, terrible, Burger King....We laugh and chat with locals all night...He was telling me how his dog had all these puppies and how he took my friend Dave to see them. I remember Dave telling me the story so I connected the dots. He was drinking his Dragon Stout and I my Red Stripe.
Finally, at 2:30 ish, it's time to go home. I still won't turn on that fan as I'd rather sweat than face the potential alternative options. It's late enough to crash. I should have paid the extra money but I can't complain for 30 bucks a night. I'm drunk....I sub it on the nice porch....and pass out...
Tomorrow starts my adventure on the Cliffs

Re: Trip Report.....Day 1....2/21
It's Friday....I wake up rather late...9ish....I never turned that ceiling fan on.....so I'm sweating my balls off....but as a result of my inaction, I actually still have balls so the opportunity cost for the sweating is very minimal relative to the big picture. Anyway, let's move on from my testicles to the remainder of the day....
I enjoy a sub on my balcony at Roots. I'm hungry for breakfast and decide to hit Café Goa. I had every intention of going to the webcast this past Sunday. I flew in the day before, however, and as John Steinbeck once said....'The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry.'....Well, at least I made it. ....I have a nice banana pancake breakfast. It's a cool little spot. On the trudge back to Roots to checkout, I run into my buddy Wally....I hadn't seen him since the late 90s so he didn't recognize me....We chat it up...of course, he knows me, so he shows me his sub collection....and I was impressed!! More to add to the drawer...lol....How many of us Negril sub users dedicate an entire drawer to such activity? I think probably all of us!!!!!!
I walk back to Roots to checkout. I'm due to check in at Sunset on the Cliffs at 4....That's my only knock on them....who the hell has a check in at 4? No worries, though....With my luggage in tow, I head for a familiar home base....The Tamboo...The staff glances at me with looks of bewilderment as I storm onto the property with my bag in hand. "are you back, Timmy Mon?' I'm asked by Rocky....'Nope, I'm just hoping I can stash my bags here for a few hours!" A 'no problem' is followed and here I am, back at the Tamboo hanging out for the day. I show my friend Sascha from Saskatoon the subs I just scored and he as well is impressed. I run into my friend and former neighbor Dave and we all sit out in the sun and have some Red Stripes......
Dwayne is meeting me at Drifters at 4. Yeah, I couldn't get enough Wednesday so I'm back for more....I'm there by 3, of course, because what's Drifters without the Luddy opening show, right? Luddy is dressed in all black today in stark contrast to the all white Wednesday attire....Again, if you haven't seen, I've posted a ton of videos...several from Drifters on the Facebook page 'Negril Boardies' I'm TimmyMon!
Of all the things I have done, I've got to say that my afternoons at the Drifters were the best experiences I had all week. The music, the element, the vibe.....they're just unparalleled...In October, on my 23rd visit, I'll be sure to do it all 3 days....Sun, Wed and Fri...The entertainment director from the Tamboo, Akiem, is at the show today....We party and sub it together....He drinks off my bucket of Red Stripe then orders us another....I actually introduce him to Luddy....How weird is that? We are having a blast, dancing, subbing it and enjoying the crowd. Dwayne shows at 4....We watch the show for another half hour then head out....If I wasn't checking into a new hotel today, I'd see Luddy's night cap....but I only have a day and a half (2 nights) on the cliffs and want to relish them
Well, not really that much time. Dwayne takes me up the hill to Sunset on the Cliffs. I'm impressed with the property. Yeah, it's older...but who cares? the rooms are HUGE! They are super clean....The verandah is gigantic as well facing the ocean.... I'll stay here in October too as well as the Tamboo....I picked it right.....My only complaint with this place is that the doors lock from the inside...i.e. press the button and close the door. I was OK this trip but I've been locked in hallways naked before due to such similar circumstances so the idea of the 'button push lock' hardly appeals to me.
I have less time in the cliffs because tonight was the night I agreed to go hang out in the hills with Dwyane and the fam. He lives in Green Island and man....if his house isn't at the top of that damn hill then it's pretty close...The roads are in rough shape...It's funny how he can drive, look at me, and navigate in and out of the crater like potholes with ease...Guess he's been up and down the road a few times before..
I hang out with Dwayne, his girl Nadine and his nephews Tevon and Kimo. I meet his mom and his daughter Nicoya....well, that's her formal name....she goes by Kelsea
I get the nephews laughing when I actually have them convinced that I had moved to Jamaica to become a pimp. I told them I would soon start 'TimmyMon's Rent-A-Dread' and I was looking to recruit potential candidates....They died laughing after I explained I was actually kidding.... They both told me they'd never meet a crazier white guy than me...I don't know if they remember...but they told me the same thing last April..
Dwayne has been up since 4 AM and he is tired...and i'm ready to walk the cliffs with my limited time. He, Nadine and I leave....hit a local pub by Grange...then head back to Negril....Dwayne is tired so Nadine drives....I get back to the cliffs around 9:30.....Quick sub ....now the headphones go on and I walk the cliffs!
Again, some don't recommend walking the cliffs or the beach at night and I respect their opinion. I enjoy it, however....That being said, however, if you don't have your senses about you...I wouldn't recommend it. I turn right out of Sunset.....headphones on, but one earphone always coming out around tight corners....I used to go to LTU on Friday nights in years past so I head on that way..They are closing as I walk in. I chat up a local woman and head out. I meet a man out front on his bike and we chat away as we walk back towards the Sunset. I'm sure we stop at several places on the way because I know I drank like 3 beers back on the walk....I tell him about my sub quality....He gets excited....He waits for me outside as I go into my room at Sunset...I grab a sub and we sit out front and enjoy. He notices the 14 to 15 Jamaican bracelets I'm wearing....and am still wearing, btw....and he tells me he makes them....He made one for me personally....wow....It took him like 3 minutes...pretty cool seeing him utilize his leg to tug the string, etc....It was impressive
It's getting late but I'm ready to party still. My friend, whose name I've since forgot, and I walk across the street to Eddie's De Bar. Eddie's is always open late. I chat up the bartenders and my friend introduces me to Aubie who happens to be there enjoying a beer. I remember him from the LTU days. I've been meaning to try his burger....
I have another sub at Eddie's and party til like 1:30.
Time for bed.
Tomorrow will be my last day in Negril ....The plan is to just chill out but once you add a few Red Stripes to the TimmyMon, only the universe can predict the journey
Good night my friends

Re: Trip Report.....Day 1....2/21
Waking up in the cliffs...Wow...I always ends my trips up here....Yeah, I don't wanna leave here....but I know, as Bob Seger famously said, 'We've got Tonight'.....well, I have today and tonight.....and I;m spending it in the cliffs.....The beach party is over and now it's time to explore the cliffs like I always do
I awaken at 8ish and go out to the Doplhin Cove, which is the restaurant here at Sunset on the Cliffs. I converse with a delightful group of women, probably 9 or so, gathering for one of the girl's 70th bday....They were a hoot....After breakfast, I walk down to the cliff, descend the ladder and hop in the water for a little swim, The water is a little rough...I had to at least get in the water....You know how it is...
I head back to the room...sit on the balcony....or lanai, as we say in Hawaii...I'm from Boston but was lucky to live in Hawaii for 6 years...I'm a sucker for the islands.....sub it up and and roll a few for the road....The headphones come on and I'm heading left outta Sunset on the Cliffs...It's about 11 or so....I'm ready for a beer....so I start with a cold Red Stripe across from the hotel a bit...I buy a few more wrist bands to add to my collection ...I chat with this one man who kept telling me I look like Troy Aikman but sound like Jack Kennedy....I totally get the JFK part....I've heard Aikman a time or two all these years in Plano, Tx
I pass the Rockhouse/Pushcart area. Ahhh...the memories...it was nearly 20 years ago that this combination was once the Pickled Parrot...The quintessential utopia for a 20 year old spring breaker....Buckets of beer, bitsy bikinis, water slides, boat rides, rope jump, bass pump, it was better than Rick's Café.....wish it were here today
I keep walking down....I stop at the No Name Bar....I was impressed with this place...I chatted up the owner from Colorado...The bar and seating area are really Caribbean yet modern and recently renovated...I'm glad I was beckoned in by the gentleman cooking the jerk....I highly recommend this place and I'll hit it up upon my return in October....I walk past Canoe....Stop at a few more random places for beers....Get close to the roundabout then decide to turn around and head back up....
I stop and have a few beers with a couple local guys. It turns out this one guy, who was the spitting image of NFL Hall of Famer Michael Irvin, knew an old buddy Micky I knew from Trelawny Parish....small world....Music on, walking up the hill...I decide to pop into one of my all time favorite places....Peewee's....I met the man years ago when I was a kid....Too bad I missed his annual party on Feb 8th....Anyway, I see Elvis...well, the one that runs the bar nowadays....have a few beers and cross the road....I see my buddy Rambo whom Ive known for years now too....We enjoy a sub as we catch up
This is when things got kinda weird
Bentley's Crabhouse is (was) right across from Peewee's up the lane. I had eaten with Bentley on numerous occasions over the years....He always served '5 Tings on a plate' lol....I had heard that his mental health had been deteriorating...I asked Rambo about Bentley....No sooner than 2 minutes later.... Bentley appeared. The man I once knew was not the person I saw across the street. Once a stocky man full of laughter, now there he was ....gaunt and bewildered....I called his name...'Bentley!" He looked across at me, sucked in, and hucked a loo-gee....Not sure on the correct spelling there....It didn't make contact...but I got the point....sad to see someone you knew and laughed a lot with to go down like this...I never wish anything negative on anyone
I head back to the room at sunset on the Cliffs....Sub it on my beautiful porch....I eat some lunch and lounge out on the cliffs....It's about 4 ish now....I shower up...and now I go right out of the hotel...My destination will be Sir D's lookout for sunset...I make stops along the way as the liquid diminishes....I refuse to go to Rick's Café...Not my gig...I will not spend 5 bucks a beer plus crowds don't tend to be amongst my favorites things as I progress in this journey called life
Sir D's Firewater Lovenest is pretty quiet upon my arrival. The guys remember me from a few days before...Soon, a whole group of Italians show up...We all have a few laughs...Unfortunately, the sunset we all come here for will not be in the horizon..pun intended...It's cloudy....but laughter can always beat the weather and we had lots of it...
I leave Sir D's....and walk....I never cab it as I could just walk for days here in Negril....By now it's dark....and I've had a bunch....but I know to always walk facing traffic....paying tight attention around corners... I've walked this roads so many times.. Being aware is EVERYTHING in Jamacia...
Stop back at the hotel...Have a beer and chat up the beautiful birthday girl from breakfast....They did the Appleton Rum tour today....I have done many of the tours and liked a lot...but,as I've gotten older, I've developed an extreme aversion for crowds and an even far greater distaste for inconvenience of any type. Therefore, I tend to do low key stuff nowadays
I head back left...Stop at the No Limit Bar and have a few beers with some guys from New York...Kimbobwee anyone? I go across to Peewee's again and have a few more there...I head back up.....Eddie's De Bar for a few....Now it's like 10:30....I had a collapsible cooler I bought....and a few beers were on ice....I was heading back to my balcony...The sky cleared and the moon was shining....I was gonna sit out on my huge balcony....I was gonna light a sub....I was gonna play Bob Seger....and I was gonna get into my own woeld...
I did all of the above
I awaken today, Sunday, March 1, on the cliffs....only it's quite different than awakening yesterday. I leave today...Wow....The things I did this week....My goodness...
best trip ever ...not just because it was the most recent....but because it truly was the best
Dwayne picks me up at 10 ish....We stop for beers along the way....I seem to get stopped for every plausible search possible leaving the airport...Not so sure if my 14 Jamaican wristbands facilitated this...plus, travelling alone never helps..
Here I am...waiting for my flight.....I'm so dark...reading the Jamaican newspaper...one local man tries talking Patios to me...I'm honored he thinks I'm local
I'll be back in October... By then, I'll figure out how to post pics
Bless up!
Thanks for following...See you in october
