Every 90 daze.
From Digicel's top up web site:

good luck, we tried it a couple of years ago, got ripped off, soon come
Add credit (money) to the phone.
however even with top ups in less than 90 days, if seems as if you have not MADE any calls while on the island in that time, regardless of having credit on your phone and an active sim, you still need to do a top up once you arrive in order to have the phone allow calls. We have seen this on one but not both of our JA phones over the past 18 months and while Digicel staff will tell you same as noted above, we have had the on island top up requirement on 5 of our last 6 trips and some were actually less than 60 days apart - very odd.
I auto top 5USD monthly so I am loaded with minutes when I hit the island.
I believe that as long as you have some credit on the phone, the sim will not expire. We last used/topped-up our Digicel phone back in November. When we returned from our trip, I put it in a drawer and forgot about it until I saw this thread. Yesterday, I charged up the phone, checked my balance and found that I still have over $1200J on the phone and I can still make and receive calls - 4 months later. One time, I think I went over 6 months between top-ups and the sim didn't expire as I still had some credit on the phone.
All of this is very interesting, but if I were to stop at the MegaMart (which I believe is a Digicel distributor), how much would it cost for a useable phone and a SIM? I know, I know... it depends on what I get for a phone... I understand that. But is there any recent experience here in that regard?
Thanks....
I have the Digicel app on my phone, top up in seconds, even did it while I was driving last week in Lucea.
Linston wound up loaning them a phone but....
A basic phone with SIM can be purchased for about 30US at Mega Mart plus any airtime
I've heard that you can get a Lime phone for less
Cap
If you have a Verizon iPhone 5 or newer it should be unlocked. Just pop in a Digicel sim and you're good to go. Double check with Verizon but every time I've asked they've told me they were.
I use my Samsung phone that I had unlocked and switch SIM cards, also buy the I week data starter plan for $600 j.
mi have had a Lime Sim and a Digicel Sim for quite a few years now that I use in unlocked phones.........
and as long as you do your topups within 60 days or less......you are always good......
the extra credit is a bonus when u reach........but it never seems to last long once you start talking or texting der.......ha ha
a Lime Sim is $300J's and comes with $100 credits usually....Digicel Sim is like around $588J's.......
most Jamaicans are with Digicel and will hate it if you have a Lime sim/phone.......since it really eats up der Digicel credits to text/call a Lime....
Cool Runnings, Marko
We use the Digi $2.95 plan, all calls to any phone, Digi, Lime, land lines, international are all JA$2.95 per minute billed per second. I dont mind US 3 cents a minute to call anywhere anytime...
