Need your help - arriving tomorrow with my 14 year old daughter

I am travelling with my 14 year old daughter and sister and still feel concerned. What about safety? I head Michael at Bar B Barn protects the guests well and I have already told them I cam coming with my daughter and if any man says/approaches my daughter there will be hell to pay. She is not used to staying at a hotel that is not in a resort setting – are there many stray men around 7 mile beach near Bar B Barn? I know some women use this a time to “have fun” – we are looking for family time and safety and security. What about going into town and to the jerk shacks? Thanks!

Good luck with that, you should have booked a resort or just plan on staying with them because there will be young guys trying to sell their bamboo lol!

There is no need to scare Michw. People travel to Negril with teenagers all the the time.

You will be fine as long as you hang out at well-staffed places of business. Alert a security guard or bartender etc. if you feel like you or your daughter are being hassled. Walking down the beach, you may attract some attention and vendors of all kinds will approach you. Politely say, "no thanks" and keep on walking. If it gets to be too much, just walk into the next place of business.

I would also hire a trusted driver to take you into town or to any restaurants, until you feel comfortable walking around. A good driver will stay with you and act as a chaperon.

you will be fine at bar b barn. i've stayed two times with a young person and many times alone. it's a comfy small property and your daughter will be well looked after by the staff. mike, during the day, ray and mr. robinson at night for security. . . . mike controls the beach in front . . . enjoy your time and don't stress.

everything is close by, you have a store to your left, and a cambio next to the store, times square across the road. on the right, you have a great thai place for a different variation of food. . . . you and you daughter can walk the beach comfortably. . . . would not send her off on her own though. . . . no need for panic and an all inclusive. . . keep an open mind . . .

Took my 3 daughters down when they were teenagers a few years back. Didn't take long for them to learn a simple no thanks and keep walking. Same as home don't go wandering at night on your own. Get a good driver to take you out. You will have a great time.

There is so much "information" out there about Negril, much of it is confusing and conflicting and based on opinions, not the truth.

It may not be a lack of research, but "researching" in places with misleading information. There are so many sites with startling incorrect information out there about Negril...

Here you can find info from visitors coming since the 60's and 70's who have interesting stories! You can get information from people who actually live here. You can get info from multiple visitors on the island at the moment. You can get information about resorts, hotels, bars and restaurants from people who were there within the last few weeks. You can get information from the business owners themselves. And you can even get information from government sources.

To quote "The Greatest", Muhammad Ali, "It Ain't Bragging If It's True", there being no better source of accurate, truthful and helpful information about Negril than Negril.com And that is thanks to our wonderful Boardie Community! They care enough to provide beneficial information for those who need assistance.

Just keep as long a leash on her as makes you comfortable.

If she’s anything like my daughter or granddaughter she will be interested in the young men.

I would go elsewhere based off of what you wrote. A 14 year old girl will attract attention and it seems that you are not prepared to or do not want to deal with it. I personally would not have any issue taking a 14 year old child to Negril.

We have taken our kids to Negril and no more problems there than at home. Great opportunity to teach her how to travel safely while still finding a way to interact and appreciate another culture.

Our beautiful daughter has travelled to Jamaica with us since she was 5 years old and is now 21. She is a beautiful, slim young lady with big brown eyes and long brown hair. Since the time she was about 11 years old many Jamaican men showed her plenty of attention. We keep our eye on her and as long as Mama and Dad are watching all is well. I know she thinks she can handle situations, but I know she is always happy to know we are very near by. The attention can be fun, as long as it doesn't go too far. Better to be safe than sorry, and to have a wonderful vacation. Have fun and stay safe.

Thank you very much for your response. I very much appreciate it. Looking forward to relaxing and will keep my daughter close. Good suggestion about the driver - had thought about that as well. And Vince, to your point no I didn't do any research at all. My grandmother was from jamaica and I grew up very comfortable around West Indian culture - I want my daughter to experience a vacation in her ancestral roots in an environment that's not sterile like an all inclusive. At the same time want to make sure she is protected and feeling safe and not hassled. Thanks all and thanks Rob!
