Wearing "camo" clothes or hats
Been seeing some articles on the internet about issues with wearing "camo" style clothes in Jamaica. I have not been able to find anything on official Jamaican websites but many travel sites have warnings about most islands in the Caribbean having issues with camo.
Anyone have insight on this issue in Jamaica? Shorts, swim suits, t-shirts, etc...

Re: Wearing "camo" clothes or hats
I'm with Accompong. I don't own any camo; never did. When I fly to Jamaica, I'm wearing a CSA white t-shirt (I have 2 left, both now 15 years old), a bathing suit, and flip-flops. I used to wear cargo shorts, but, well, you never know when a beach will be part of the ride to the resort. One must be always ready to tan.

Re: Wearing "camo" clothes or hats
Our Apple Vacations docs read...."Out of respect for the military, travelers to Jamaica are not permitted to wear camouflage clothing."

Re: Wearing "camo" clothes or hats
I have never had a problem with my camo - Dixie flag tshirt in Negril. My girlfriend has even gotten compliments on her camo - Dixie flag bikini.

Re: Wearing "camo" clothes or hats
I use a camouflage bag everyone wanted me to give it to them. Everyone loved the swim shorts also.

Re: Wearing "camo" clothes or hats
I have notified the newbies in our group to leave the camo at home. Hope they have other shorts to wear. Those dedicated hunters are all camo all the time. Shorts, hats, sunglasses, shirts, shoes, etc... besides the usual jackets, bib overalls, etc.......
But there is nothing like wearing your blaze orange camo jacket to Lambeau Field to watch a Packer game

I have actually been stopped at customs for wearing camo cargo shorts and told that I had to change before entering the country.

Re: Wearing "camo" clothes or hats
A young lady that works with the resort we frequent is on my wife's facebook page. She has some "outfits" that are camo. I doubt anyone would mistake what she is wearing as para military, but they are certainly interesting... And not really camouflaging much of anything....

Re: Wearing "camo" clothes or hats
Have worn my desert camo cargo shorts many many times to Negril. Up and down the beach...Never a snicker or complaint. Hell I even have a Lynyrd Skynyrd shirt I wear sometimes. Takes all kinds and I am proud to be one of dem dare woodchucks.
Interesting information anyway..Thanks for sharing!

Re: Wearing "camo" clothes or hats
I've been wearing camo shorts to and in JA for years and have never had an issue.
-
Re: Wearing "camo" clothes or hats
I never knew this. I don't own anything camo, but I never this.
-
Re: Wearing "camo" clothes or hats
I've been wearing camo cargo shorts in JA for the past few years. Never heard of this law, and no one has ever said anything to me about it. One of OP's articles says don't drink Jamaican bottled water, only purified tap water from the resort, so that source is definitely reliable. ;)

1 of a handful of times that I have wanted to dust off the BDU's in the last 20 years.....

Re: Wearing "camo" clothes or hats
I've worn cut off BDUs down there and never noticed any looks. The only place that I've been where I wont wear them is China.

Re: Wearing "camo" clothes or hats
Camouflage is not allowed? Somebody better tell Bobo.

Re: Wearing "camo" clothes or hats
it's a NO NO in Jamaica.......if you do....you are asking for a problem in Jamaica......
when Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers were touring the USA about 15 years ago.....
they were all dressed in military camo.... it didn't strike mi why they were until after they started playing.....lol
couldn't do dat in Jamaica without having a problem thus sticking up der nose at Babylon in Jamaica from the good olde USA....

Re: Wearing "camo" clothes or hats
I wore my bell bottom dungarees when I got out of the Navy in 1972. They were still kinda hip. But I preferred my civies to my uniform the previous 4 years. The hair cut still gave me away! The thought of giving the appearance of military garb just rubs me the wrong way. Trying to look like a vet, pardner? Give it a rest. None of my friends who are serious hunters wear their camo except in the woods.
That said, I've been wearing an olive drab sun hat for decades in Jamaica (and everywhere else) to keep my shaved head protected. For some reason I garnered a salute and a few "Are you military?" this trip. Maybe because I was here for a month and a half and more people had an opportunity to ask. At the end of the day, I say, wear what you want, but don't snicker at my speedo! Grumpier than that cat --Marblehead

Re: Wearing "camo" clothes or hats
I usual travel in camo shorts to and from jamaica because of the pockets, never had a problem or comment about them

Re: Wearing "camo" clothes or hats
This is not about wearing camouflage once your there. It's in the airport going through immigration.

Re: Wearing "camo" clothes or hats
In Kentucky camo may be the most popular pattern. I've even seen baby "onsies" in camo. I guess the babies are "playing at soldier".
UK blue is pretty popular too.

Re: Wearing "camo" clothes or hats
Rob, do you have any input on this matter. It's starting to be one of those " I wore camo to China and was held in isolation for two years" kind of threads. After 20 trips to JA most in camo cargo shorts because I like all the pockets to hold my wallet, passport, phone and other items. I have never once been told by customs I can't wear them. From what I have always understood is that you should not try to dress like a JA cop or military or sell anything of that nature.
Now for the rest of you calling people names, some people wear camo to hunt and most of my ex military friends and myself wear it because of comfort and the utility factor. I find the all the pockets useful and I don't really give a **** how people think it looks. I just don't people feeling like they need to leave clothes at home because of rumor. That being said most visiting JA are not going to be wearing full on tactical or BDU's with jungle boots to Negril.

Use your head. A Hollister "camo" shirt with jeans or a "camo" bathing suit would be hard to mistake for a uniform. But if there is even the remotest chance your outfit could be mistaken for legit battle fatigues, why would you take the chance? Is that fabric really worth the risk? Impersonating an officer is not a joke thing.
The immigration officers have the right to do just about anything, you are not officially in Jamaica yet, and you are not in your home country - you are in limbo and up to the discretion of the officers. Do as they ask.

Re: Wearing "camo" clothes or hats
I have brought to Jamaica a camo fishing kayak, camo fishing rod, and also camo fishing lines. The only problem I had at the customs was negotiating down the excessive import tax they wanted to charge me. I also wear my camo shorts throughout the Island NO PROBLEM.

Re: Wearing "camo" clothes or hats
I'm always in camo, fat old bald white guy in tourist clothes, nobody notices me.
-
Re: Wearing "camo" clothes or hats
Didn't give it any thought whatsoever myself, and likely wore camo shorts through immigration. If not, I KNOW I wore them once in Negril. No one gave me so much as a second look.
