I was in JA first week of March. Armed with deet etc. but never needed it. I do not as a rule, spend time on the sand at sunset though so probably avoided many sandfleas.
love the 'bug' in your post!
It has been awhile but we were there mid Feb armed with spray, a vape mat, and afterbite and nothing. Not even one bite
Was there all Feb. Fleas as usual, early morn and evening
the bugs were awful there in febuary mostly at nite mosquitos ate me alive.bug spray did help
I just always have something burning never seen a sand flea in Negril.
The sand fleas are living in the discarded cigarette butts and really developing a taste for humans.
I met an amazing number of Jamaicans who had contracted the mosquito borne Chikungunya. Wow! Incredible pain that can persist in the joints for an extended period of time. It's definitely something to avoid so we kept the DEET handy and kept the screens secure as much as possible. We both got a couple of bites, but not sure who were the culprits. Off! wipes are very popular with people I know. I also recommend After Bite, too.
Had about 50 on my legs in February...itchy and kept me up. Take bug spray and antihistamine cream!
There seem to be very few mosquitoes, that I have seen, right now. Yes, they are around but haven't really bothered me. As for sand fleas, I always spray my legs before going out to the beach at night or after it rains. If I am at a beach bar I also spray my arms because there is sand on the tables even if you don't see it. The other thing I do is to shower when I get back so there is no sand on me at all. I once had sand fleas in my bed - it has never happened again. ;)
Here now. Got one or two mosquito bites. No fleas. Not using bug repellent.
Yesterday I did take a shot from a jelly fish in water off of White Sands near edge of the roped of section. It was more irritating than painful. Used a mixture of Red Stripe and punch to sooth it.
Did you smear that on or drink it down?
I was advised by Doctor Love to drink it down. Best medicine I ever had. Worked like a charm. Feels great today.
mosquitos were no problem at all.didnt even see one.i wear flea collers on my ankles,so of course sand fleas were also no problem, not one bite
I've been up in the hills for 6 days. No real bother with mosquito.
Just a really bad case of rock gravity
sand fleas really love me,i used to get hundreds of sand flea bites on my legs.i tried DOG flea collers fastened loosly on each ankle so they can slide up and down your legs.i put them on when I get there and take them off when I leave for the airport.you even wear them in the water swimming.in the 15 years that ive been using them I went from hundreds of bites to zero in the 3 weeks time I spend there.putting them on loosely prevents you from getting a rash because the water washes off any residue from the flea collers.
Just flew in last night from chill land...10 great days (never have had a bum day) sand fleas are same as it ever was, stay away at dusk, or take a break then. We HAVE to be up every morn at dawn on a beach (poka dot legs where surf washed off bug juice). But by far the biggest concern was from friends/locals who have contracted chickengunia(?)in the past year or so. Spread by skeetos so spray well in evening. By the end of our trip I was calling it chickenganja. Never any kind of deal breaker on a Jamaica visit, just a caution for precaution. As always, the good that Jamaica has offered far offsets any bad.
