Have you had this happen to you while in or back from Jamaica?
...Ummmm..... Yes, @ the airport ...
Duty Free , thought it would be secure ..shortly after our return
this last december, at the duty free at airport. just got the charges reversed!! brazen!!!
also, a couple of years ago, i withdrew money at black river, no money came out, never recouped that one!!!
I see a pattern here. I'm staying far away from the duty free shop (good thing I don't smoke or drink hard liquor) and keeping my credit card in a protective sleeve.
Negril1990, if you do a forum search you will find a couple other threads on this subject. I seem to remember one from Flipadelphia from last year.
Twice ............. in Chicago both times ........... staying over night for a early morning flight to Jamaica .................. never had an issue in Jamaica
Get a card with a chip and you won't have to worry.
Not all point of sale system accept the chips yet. Cards can still be charged (and stollen) the "old way" - via the information displayed on the card. Any type of manual entry can be used (e.g., online, a virtual terminal, and/or a Square type of processor).
If you are paying via credit card and the checkout clerk is using their cell phone, wait until they put it down to present your card. Otherwise, they could be taking a picture of the card to use later.
Given that so many charges now are online or otherwise remote in some fashion, I'm sure I understand how the new chip cards are going to significantly increase security. As far as I can tell, the chip only comes into play at point of purchase swipes. I received a new card with a chip a few months ago and 80% or more of my charges have been on-line or at a gas pump.
Unfortunately, there are those who take advantage of others. Here are some of the most commonly used methods. Be diligent and be aware of all surroundings and transactions
Cell Phone Camera Scam
While paying for a purchase with your card, someone INCLUDING SERVER OR CLERK, could be using their cell phone to take a
picture of your card number, expiration date and name
Card Switch
After making a purchase, a wrong card is intentionally returned to you. your card has been replaced with a
cancelled or declined card, and if unnoticed at the time of the transaction, the fraudster can go on a
shopping spree with your card. Always check your card when given back to you. If you don't report a lost
or stolen card, you are responsible for it.
Restaurant and Store Skimming
Small, pocketable skimming devices, which can be used by restaurant servers and store cashiers
Try NOT to let your card out of your sight
This is why I always use cash in Jamaica.
I always get flamed for saying I always pay cash. But in 14 trips to Jamaica I've never had a problem.
Me nevah have no problem
Cap
I just had this happen .
I was there april 18 to 26 was supposed to be til may 3 but had a scooter accident and went home a week early
so the other day I get my statement and there's a charge that shouldn't be.
turned out to be a store in Kingston
I only used my card for deposit on said scooter, paid for damage in cash and got the carbon copy back
wonder if I should call scooter guy?
Call your CC company and dispute the charge ASAP
Cap
negril1990: call your cc company, i disputed my duty free charges, had to send in my receipt and fill out a form letter. just got the amount credited back to my account. . . . cash at duty free from now on . . . never had an issue using my cc for my hotel all these years.
Called CC they were nice and helpful. Alls good now but Jamaica beat me up a little this reach
Not just for paying US. I was told how I was going to be robbed. It was in more than just one thread.
Oh, I must have missed that then. Apologies.
never let the card out of you sight, I take my card to the cashier and watch as the transaction is processed, they got me once with a card reader.
AGAIN ........... happened twice to us in Chicago ................. it can happen anywhere ............... use the same safe guards no matter where you go ! !
PS ............... review your bill each month and contest every charge that is bonus ............ no matter where you are traveling .......... or even in your home town
I have never had a problem but I do not use a CC much while there. I take along a CC that I don't use everyday so it is very easy to monitor, only a few transactions for my stay and I watch it for a couple of month after. Low credit limit on the spare card so can't get in to much trouble. I did use it at the duty free store in MB and had no issues but they did have a chip reader and used my pin.
Happen to me. CC skimmed at restaurant and then within an hour was used at another hotel to get cash. CC company the card was swiped at the hotel. Employees of both places in on it obviously.
CC company reversed it and 2 employees from the hotel went to court, never found out the outcome.
Unfortunately the manager and cops could not figure out who at the first hotel/restaurant was in on it, so the manager told me he fired everyone on duty that night. I was sad to hear that, BUT as it turned out a couple in the table next to us had theirs skimmed also and within hours had $3000 US charged in MoBay.
And sometimes 'it giveth'... Checked my account and saw several ABM transactions posted this week; called my bank right away. They cancelled my debit card and began to enter a fraud investigation. As the service rep was doing this she noticed the transactions are Deposits, not withdrawals! We'll wait a few days and see if they get reversed.
