The website mentions nothing about building in Negril. The news article does. I believe it is a great Idea.
Right on! This is really fantastic news. :)
With an emergency room this would address one of our biggest concerns about long term stays in Negril. But even more important, this would be a god send for Westmoreland and Hanover residents that have to travel to Cornwall Ragional or Kingston. Visiting your loved one in the hospital when they are at that distance can be a burden in itself.
Amen!
The link I posted was merely additional information about the group
Yeah BISONS!! As a proud graduate of Howard University and even prouder that the school I love is helping the place I love. Now I'm off to do some investigation to see who from HU is involved.
Is this the same as the project at Rhodes Hall?
Ras...same project.
It won't be the land where the resort is located....but located on the Rhodes Hall Plantation land owned by a Jamaican...he has over 550 acres in that area.
Thanks Lisa, I have seen the overhead photos of the property and the layout for the hospital. This will be a great thing for the Negril area!
This is fantastic news, and much needed.
now this is certainly outstanding........
this is certainly welcomed news to the expat population in and around Negril!
as well as to the Jamaicans they have carried the burden of traveling so far for health care...........
Jah Bless
Cool Runnings, Marko
As someone who spent 72 hours in the hospital in Sav until I could be transferred UHWI and then to the States I'm very happy and thrilled for this development.
Great News!.............
Lets all hope JA Govt and finances stay out of it, and that it gets built in record time, with no "problems"
ummmmmmmmmmmmm
other than the fact that Wellington *said* Howard was building this thing,
i see NOTHING-else indicating such a thing
the doctors et al *might* be Howard alumni,
but the group is in NewJersey
Found a website for the proposed hospital:
http://www.negrilhospital.org/
I have to agree with you Smith......I could not find anything about Howard University's involvement which as you know is in DC and not NJ so I asked my dad who is affiliated with HU and he's never heard of this project...not that there's no truth to it but his reply when I asked him was "How the ras can HU underwrite this when they can't even pay their faculty, staff and bills"
It would be a nice gesture if Howard did underwrite this much needed project but I'm seriously doubting Howard's involvement....but I'm still a proud graduate regardless :)
could be the fact that cruise ships will be landing in the area of this end of the Island...??
Good reason for Cruise Ships Companies to push Jamaica..............
God Speed with the Project
I've wondered about the potential for medical tourism in JA. India has a burgeoning business with hospitals catering to US patients without medical insurance. Given our rather bizarre health care system, the cost of an operation for an uninsured patient here can run $25K to $100K. In other economies, it's possible to construct first rate hospitals that can provide the same services for 10-20% of the cost.
Wow, the jobs that this will bring to the people of Negril is phenomonal to say the least!
I hate to bump a thread this old, given yesterday's tragedy - Is this project dead?
As of Xmas 2013, still looking for funding. It's a great idea and much needed but unless they have some serious financial backing, this will remain a dream.
The tourist taxes should be going to things like this. The hospital not only benefits tourism, but it benefits the locals too.
Here is the latest press release from the NIH (Negril International Hospital) from Dec 23, 2013. I posted here back on Dec 30th:

2500 jobs!
Rob, where exactly in Negril (or surrounding area) is this hospital being built? The first article posted back in 2011 said it would take roughly three and a half years to initial completion, projecting an opening then sometime next year. Is any actual building/construction now in progress? I'm glad to read other hospitals around the island are getting some help from the NIH, but what is actually going on in Negril, if anything? It would be great to read that they funded at least two more completely outfitted ambulances as the one Negril has is obviously not enough.
The reason that the NIH is making donations across the island is to get things moving as there is still environmental and economic impact studies awaiting completion of the two projected build sites.
The NIH does not want to simply stand still and wait, so they are helping in areas where they can as they get final approval to break ground.
This is a major project, almost an entire community than a simple hospital.

Thank you for the update. So basically, their projection of a 2015 time frame opening is null and void since the NIH still hasn't received the go ahead to put a shovel in the ground. Too bad, though not at all unexpected. Would still be a wonderful gift to the town of Negril itself if they'd pop for another ambulance.
Sadly(..???..), the current status of the project, and the actions/donations/etc thus far is an excellent example of folks having to deal with the Jamaican "...soon come.." thing-y, mentality, stylee, prioritization, etc.
Rob's comments make a lot of sense, but for some reason, in the back of my mind, i'm hearing nagging voices saying:::>>> "..what about the intiation and COMPLETION, of HUGH projects like the Grand Paladium resort (outside Lucea)...??.."
did it take the GrandPaladium developers this long to get those so-called impact studies..??...Quote:

the upside, which may be predictive of things to come, once/whenever the hospital project is completed:::>>> Jobs..!!!....
for a few *selfish* reasons, mi-personally, still don't like that GrandPaladium thing-y, but the jobs & positive economic impact it has created for Lucea-folks, and many many MANY others in the area is/has been tremendous.

.
Additionally,
something i've come to *appreciate* about Jamaica's *soon-come* style, with big-projects is that they seem to have a tendency to anticipate & prepare for the future ---- however, NOT in the same way we do in-foreign.
for example,
recognizing the need for a qualified work-force,
in preparation for increased tourist-industry development in the Lucea area, they opened-up, expanded, etc their training programs for tourist related jobs. .... rather than wait, they started the work-force preparations YEARS BEFORE the ground was broken for the GrandPaladium.
i wouldn't be surprised
if they do a similar thing for this hospital project:::::>>>>> new schools, training programs for hospital support, staff, etc.
ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
i'm vague-ly
recalling see-ing a sign some-someplace(?) just outside Lucea, on the main road about something-something(?) being built soon for some-kind(?) of training program.
