Trip Report w/pics
Our flight arrived on time just before noon on a Wednesday morning. But even though we had taxied up to the gate there wasn't the typical mad rush to grab bags and deplane. One of the passengers had become ill on the flight and the Captain asked that all passengers remain seated until the sick passenger could leave the plane to get medical attention. As soon as we were given the OK everyone anxiously deplaned. We headed to Immigration and it was a pleasant surprise that there was only half a dozen people in front of us. Immigration and customs was guick guick, no need for Club Mobay today.
Normally when we depart the airport we are anxious to head west to Negril. Today we had a different plan. Cathy, my life and travel companion had long wanted to see Rose Hall Great House. Leaving the airport we headed east with Rocky, our long time friend and driver. After about a 15 minute drive we reached Rose Hall.

Re: Trip Report w/pics
Rose Hall Great House was constructed in the 1700's. The former plantation house is open for tours and there is both a Day and an Evening tour available. For convenience we chose the Day tour so we could still get to Negril before evening. Cost of the tour was $20. per person.
There is quite a legend to the plantation. Annie Palmer, who was all of 4'11'', was the Lady of the plantation and it is alleged that she killed 3 husbands and countless slave lovers over the course of here stay there. Her stay ended when at the age of 29 she was killed by one of her slave lovers. A google or wikipedia search can yield different versions of the history of Annie Palmer.
This is a picture of Annie Palmer surrounded by children that hangs in the Great House.

When visiting the Great House, there are signs stating "No Photography", but as you can see, it is not strictly enforced.

Re: Trip Report w/pics
Did you find the ghost of Annie lurking in any of your pictures? Maybe she is looking out a window, or she is an orb?

Great pics, I was there in 98'.. still looks the same. Got really moved and emotional when I went to the lower quarters and saw where they kept the slaves and the shackles that were still on the wall.

Re: Trip Report w/pics
After leaving Rose Hall Great House we headed west towards Negril. It was now well past lunch time so we made a stop at Scotchies which is on the highway into Montego Bay. While I had heard of the restaurant I had never been there. Naturally, jerk was on the menu as well as a cold Red Stripe for me. Rocky joined us in the restaurant and it was like visiting with an old friend. We have known and ridden with Rocky for many years and many a trip so we had some catching up to do.
At Scotchies you order and pay for your food and are given a ticket. You taken the ticket to the next counter and your food is served to you on sheets of tin foil. We had an order of pork, chicken and breadfruit. This is where Cathy discovered and fell in love with coconut water.

We made a brief stop at Mega Mart to get supplies and then we were off to Negril and Travellers Beach Resort.
I always get a kick out of the signs one sees in Jamaica.

I also am amused watching the street vendors as you leave Montego Bay. This first guy was jogging backwards while trying to make change for a moving car.

We arrived to some welcome news at Travellers. We had booked a superior room and at checkin I was asking about getting a fridge for the room. The desk clerk informed me that it wouldn't be necessary as they had upgraded us to a kitchenette.

Soon it was time to move and get down to the beach. Somehow we ended up next door at Errol's Sunset Cafe & Bar where the vibe was just right. We had numerous libations then retired to our patio to give thanks for a great day.

Re: Trip Report w/pics
I remember as a kid, my dad took us to Rose Hall when the original house was nothing more than ruins with an abundance of vegitation growing up through what was left of the interior. No roof, hardly any walls left, almost nothing except fot the foundation and those front steps leading to the front entrance.
They did a wonderful job of restoring it to it's former state.
I always love seeing the Jamaican school children walking home from school sporting the various uniforms of their schools. I wish they had that here in Canada too. It speaks to a real sense of unity which sadly is very much lacking up here.
Great report!

Re: Trip Report w/pics
Aha! Its Thursday and our first full day in Negril. I woke up around 5:30 AM and Cathy already had the coffee on. I was feeling remarkably rested even though we had stayed up a bit late the night before. After a guick cup of coffee it was off to explore the beach. By 6:15 I had already been offered ganga, hash, hash oil, cocaine and even a tour to the hills to see where Lambs Breath is grown. I politely declined all offers and soon it was off to the breakfast buffet.
If memory serves me correct, the buffet opens at 7:30 which is early by Jamaican standards. We hadn't been able to take advantage of any of the Groupon or Living Social deals so we had to pay the $11.00 buffet charge each day. Breakfast is pretty good and ackee and saltfish as well as callalou was offered each day as well as an omelette station and fresh fruit. As much as I have been to Jamaica I still can't get a liking for ackee & saltfish.

After breakfast we applied heavy doses of sun tan lotion and headed to the beach.
We met 3 gals from Oregon who were there on a Groupon deal. They were a lot of fun to visit with and we soon found out we were neighbors as they had the room next to ours. This was their 4th visit to Travellers.

The special of the day was Pumpkin Juice and it was pretty good.

Re: Trip Report w/pics
We have gone to Negril a number of times at this time of year, and being from Florida we are used to hot and muggy weather in the summer. Our first three days of vacation were actually very nice and pleasant. There was almost constant cloud cover but no rain and it kept the temperature very comfortable.
After several hours of bathing in the sea and giving thanks on the lounger we were starting to think of something to eat. I suggested we take a taxi to Alfreds for fish & chips for lunch. Cathy was all on board as then we could walk over to Times Square for Cathy's favorite hobby. Yep, shopping!
Attachment 41896
Attachment 41897
We ordered 2 orders of fish & chips and it was just too much. We should have just ordered one order and split it, but it was excellent. As it turned out we spotted Michael on the beach and invited him over to share. We had known Michael from years past when we stayed at Negril Gardens before it became Grand Pineapple.

After lunch we walked down the beach before heading over to Times Square. In front of us was Tony who has a stand by Merrils 2. He insisted on us taking a look at his offerings. We did but he was quite perturbed when we didn't buy anything. Oh well, how many trinkets do you think I need from Jamaica when I've been visiting for 25 years.

We soon reached Times Square and the stores didn't really seem that busy. Cathy went one way and I went another. I headed for the bar where I bought a chocolate ice cream cone, but to be honest, the ice cream wasn't that good. I amused myself watching the guards changing money in the money machine. I offered to help but they didn't take me up on it.
