This isn't an onsite trip report but I will get to the report upon my return.. 2 nights in Negril wicked wicked beach party last night, good times.
I'm looking for a rental car .. preferably a private rental no credit card required... does anyone know where to look for this sort of thing?
Lots to catch everyone up on .. I'm having a blast!!!! Jamaica is hot hot hot and beautiful. Now I know .. once you go you know .. :)
I would discourage you from trying a "private rental"...if anything happens to you or the car or you get into an accident or get pulled over for any reason you are screwed.Quote:

For a bit more detail on OhLiz's post - I posted this a ways back in a Tictoc thread asking the same thing:
If you are thinking of renting (hiring) a car from an individual, JUST like at home, you would not be covered under the private passenger insurance that most individual owners have covering them. This is the same world wide. There is a stipulation in the insurance agreement that you will not be hiring out your car or the insurance becomes invalid. This is the reason that legal, legitimate car rental companies pay higher rates for their insurance coverage. The car insurance for the person you rented it from would not be covering you as well since you are renting the car... essentially you would have no insurance coverage at all.
and if you think you can get away with saying you "borrowed" a car....
If there is no family/blood relation and you are a tourist visiting the island, there would be virtually no incentive for anyone to let you borrow their car for anything less than an emergency. Considering the circumstances, it would be well within in the right of the insurance company to ask you to prove why there was no payment for use of someone's property. How could you prove that? And please remember that any barter arrangement would count as payment, so saying you brought stuff for them and they let you use the car would mean the car was hired out.
Insurance companies have lawyers working for them whose job is to find legal ways not to pay a fraudulent claim. What would you have on your side to contend this matter in court? And of course you would have to attend the court hearings at your own expense or a warrant for your arrest could be placed on you when you would return to the island.
So in simple terms, driving a car from anyone other than a legitimate rental company puts you and those in the car as well as the other drivers on the road at risk. So.... dont do it....
Hi Manda. My professional advice to you is to take Rob's advice VERY seriously. It's excellant advice. Avoid having your dream vacation turn into a nightmare. It's not worth the risk.

I have the required relationship with my Jamaican family and can document it. However I wouldn't even think of borrowing a car from my son (he has 2). Yes. I do ride with him or my "nephew" with a white plate but I carry my old work permit and residency card as well as proof of ownership of my yard and relationship with my adopted kids. Still, if I were to meet an accident it would be a major PITA to go through what would be necessary to prove all that in some court in Sav.
As I've said before...route cabs are cheap and plentiful...and the drivers know where the potholes are (grin)
Go to Vernons see what they suggest and ask around let me know what you find .DO NOT NOT NOT give anyone any money to just borrow a car lol no matter how much they sweet talk you.
The roads are quite dangerous not as many traffic signals and road bumps and safety barriers around steep cliff edges as at home so drive carefully.Get every single insurance you can.The insurance fees seem very reasonable so buy all of them!For tryes,bumps to other cars, bumps to your own and personal accident.Where you planning on going Manda? So glad you are having a good time, how could you not! I rented a motorcycle and rode on the roads there--just be hyper-vigilant--JA drivers seem to have different road rules when it comes to passing, speeding, staying in their lane etc. I think you will be fine. I am totally psyched that after your worries you are having a great stay--that is how it should be!

I drove for the first time too, I did'nt like it but I did it! and the round about made me nervous, hell it makes me nervous in my own city! I just wanted to close my eyes and go!! but it was an experience to say the least! Just more practise and I have a great teacher.

Not that I am recommending a first timer do it, but I ONLY rent "friends" vehicles. Most of the time they are motorcycles, but several times I've taken friend's cars to pick up people up in Negril and Mobay. I'm about to head to JA for 6 weeks and already secured a nice new Honda 125 for the whole time, the price was $125 for a laptop off Craigslist. Bought another one for the same price that I'm selling for $350. Once you know the country and make some good friends, life and getting around is EASY in JA. I also don't think the driving is THAT crazy, I've seen much worse in other developing countries. I think it's actually alot of fun because I get to drive like they do, can't do that here in the US or they'll take my license again... I hope you're having a blast Manda! Enjoy JA!

Did you rent a car and found someone to drive it for you? If so, it sounds like you and Jamaica are a fit. I do hope you give us a report when you return. I love hearing about first time experiences.
Please be aware that there is absolutely no insurance coverage that would be in effect while renting a "friends vehicle". As previously mentioned, you would be responsible for any and all damages that would be incurred should there be an accident.Quote:

Thanks Angel. I will probably rebook sometime in March. Gotta make sure things at home are smooth before I can vacation. I was going then coming back to do my son's first birthday and Thanksgiving. It was too much! Something had to give.

Hello all!!
I'm back in Toronto :( It's sad ... I miss Jamaica. I'm so very sorry that I wasn't able to meet up with Rob and Lisa my two days in Negril really flew by and the "vacation" was pretty action packed, go go go and trying to pack in so many places in 7 days was hard but FUN! Haven't quite recovered but I'll be working on my report and can't wait to share it with everyone!
I wanted to thank everyone for all their help and advice although my trip was spread across different areas in Jamaica and not just Negril the help and advice was all extremely helpful. Thinking about the next trip already!! But will hopefully have a report by the end of the week so it's still fresh in my mind.

I feel the same way when everyone has asked me okay so what did you do on this day .. and I tell them and it could be as simple as hanging out in town playing learning dominos and it doesnt give it justice to the experience that I had while doing it. But I'm going to try my best to re inact how absolutely wonderful of a time I had in Jamaica. I'm still having a hard time getting back into the "swing" of work and home and I feel drained of Seratonin (sp?) Hoping that writing my trip report will give me back some good feelings :)
