Help buy a defibrillator for Negril Emergency Service
Some of you know me, many probably don't.
For 5 years I was Director of Friends of Jamaica USA and helped complete many projects in Jamaica. That charity is no longer in existence, but I continue to help with projects. I guess it's in my blood. :)
Last month, a group of Jamaica-loving friends gathered at a Caribbean Festival in the Quad Cities and got the ball rolling to buy an AED (defibrillator) for the Negril Emergency Service. Budget constraints in Jamaica mean the Emergency Crews often work without needed supplies. A defibrillator is a basic piece of equipment that can save many lives, and Negril EMS does not have one.
Please help us exceed our goal with this fundraiser!

Re: Help buy a defibrillator for Negril Emergency Service
I wanted to give this post a bump to the top. I have never met Nurse Marcia but I know from reading posts over the years that she has done a lot to help people in Jamaica. This seems like a very worthwhile cause to me, and I hope more of the board family will help to make this happen.

Re: Help buy a defibrillator for Negril Emergency Service
Thanks, Bill.
I'm bringing this to the top again, to encourage everyone to take a look at the fundraiser. I've donated $10 - (for now) and challenge everyone to match or exceed that. No donation is too small.
I've heard so many people say they want to help and give back to the place that gives us so much happiness - and this is an easy way to do that!
Please take a minute and donate today! There are 2 weeks left. (The site is safe and has an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau)

Re: Help buy a defibrillator for Negril Emergency Service
All boardies, new and old alike, I read on this forum all the time about what can I...we do to help with things in the town we love!! Heres the chance, this is something that's
needed ... the price of a couple cocktails on the beach is all you need to donate to send this over the top....
A place like Negril, where theres not a lot of medical equipment makes a vacation at time, '' go at your own risk''
tHE LIFE YOU SAVE MAY BE YOUR OWN..... ( I think I stole that saying from somewhere...lol...)
Big ups, Marcia !!

Re: Help buy a defibrillator for Negril Emergency Service
Donation made, just hope I don't have to use the thing!!

Re: Help buy a defibrillator for Negril Emergency Service
jojo P - thanks!!!
TedP - Thank you! I hear you and I agree, I hope I never need it.
You all rock - we will get to (or over) our goal quickly at this rate. Big thanks to everyone!
To remind everyone - any donations over our goal will purchase additional Pads since they are single use, and then need to be replaced. They are the pads that stick to the chest and deliver the shock to the heart. Once used, they won't work again. They cost just over $50 per set.

Re: Help buy a defibrillator for Negril Emergency Service
nurse marcia, i'm going to assume that the first responders are well versed in the use of the defibrillator?
with the ambulance being out of commission so often, where is this equipment stored?
please forgive me for asking such questions . . .

It's virtually impossible to misuse a defibrillator.

i beg to differ . . . worked in a seniors residence, and observed "emergency trained staff" trying to use such appliance. they where reading the manual!!!

Re: Help buy a defibrillator for Negril Emergency Service
Good questions Jitterbug.
In emergency situations, familiarity with the AED will be important. There will be training programs once the AED is delivered, with ongoing practice opportunities thereafter. We chose to include training pads so every first responder can practice until they are comfortable and as often as needed to remain comfortable. In addition, this model is the easiest to use, in my experience, with spoken instructions for every step, that begin as soon as it is turned on.
I am not in a position to comment on your statement regarding the availability of the ambulance. I have no first hand knowledge of that.
Having an AED on board the ambulance and the availability of the ambulance at any given time are 2 separate issues.

You're welcome, Jitterbug. I'm sure you're not the only one with those questions and I'm glad I could answer one of them.

Re: Help buy a defibrillator for Negril Emergency Service
We are very close. With the size of this board and with anyone us possibly needing this service someday I can't believe we didn't hit the mark on day one. Actually I can believe it because I procrastinated until this afternoon. If everyone pondering this donated just a few dollars (4 red stripe or so) there would be two of them. Thank you to everyone that has participated.

Re: Help buy a defibrillator for Negril Emergency Service
I love the extra encouragement, Rumlover. Thank you, and thank you for your donation!
We are only $365 away from our goal. Lets put it over the top today! It's Friday, which in itself is reason to be happy. Making a donation of any amount kick your weekend off on the right foot - giving back to the place that gives us so much pleasure!

Re: Help buy a defibrillator for Negril Emergency Service
Just made a donation and shared on my Facebook page. Let's get this over the top. We take these AEDs for granted. We have them in schools, airports, sports stadiums, shopping malls, churches etc. Seems that the EMS in Negril should have at least one. Perhaps some of the bigger resorts should have them too. Does anyone know?
-
Re: Help buy a defibrillator for Negril Emergency Service
Thank you Nurse Fred.
Yes, some hotels have an AED. I don't know how many.
-
Re: Help buy a defibrillator for Negril Emergency Service
The pads are $50/ set, wow! Would need to raise another $1,000 to provide the service to just 20 people, is that correct?
-
Re: Help buy a defibrillator for Negril Emergency Service
Lola, your math is correct, although I'm puzzled by your comment.
Are you interested in helping?
