I hear the friggin Jet ski rentals are back! Is that true?
Sure was quite without them!!
I was just there, and saw not a single jetski in ten days. I believe you have been misinformed
There are no jetski rentals in Negril. Private owners can bring their own, but in the last year I have seen a grand total of two being used one weekend...
No jet skis sighted the past 5 days on the beach.
Regards,
Bob
Are they jet ski's banned?
No, the ban was lifted along time ago. But there are legal requirements that have to be met (official launching zones, transfers to and from these zones, special insurance, licensing and inspections, etc) that legal operators decided it was not in their best financial interest to pursue. Their profit margin was not great enough in Negril to make it worthwhile.
There are a few operators running elsewhere on the island, but in Negril, the operators decided it was best not to operate...
The private jetskis I saw during one particular weekend were brought by their owners from Kingston to use on their weekend getaway in Negril.
There are discussions on finding ONE spot for them to rent out of, but JUST discussions still....they will need to be licensed and insured to even touch the water.
After several years vacationing in Negril, we didn't go last year partly because I had various safety concerns. While the hassling was up the last couple of years, we could deal with that. The increasing (in my perception, anyway) reports of theft and robberies were a concern. But the jet skis were the deal breaker. My wife is a beach person and her idea of a vacation is to alternate long swims with naps on the beach while I go fetch lunch etc. I swim fine, just don't love it the way she does, so she'd be in the water alone, and I found myself pacing when she was swimming because of the jet skis zipping around her. Not a relaxing vacation! Sometimes it would be a Jamaican trying to rent her one even while she was swimming, sometimes it was tourists who didn't appear to know what they were doing, and sometimes just either Jamaicans or tourists who I thought were being jerks. The discussions here in the spring about the increased police presence on the beach and the news about the jet skis going away have induced us to return this February.
wrtiii, Like your wife, my ''sweet place''i in Negril is the ocean...swimming, floating, walking....The one thing that took me away from the pure enjoyment, and serenity of the water was the jet skis.
I use to love to swim out to the floating dock out of Alfreds, and lay out there, very surreal....but had to stop because I had to dodge the jetskis.
I couldn't swim outside my resort in peace because of them whooshing up and yelling, 'do you want to ride jetski?"
I know a boardie that was on the beach the afternoon the tourist from the U.S. was hit and killed buy a guy on a jetski.
Medical attention was slow getting there, and there were tourists that were attending to this man....it didn't matter how long it took for medical
attention to get there, as the man died almost immediately from the blunt force trauma.
I can't imagine the pure horror that that mans family went through. One second, there dad and husband was swimming along in the water, and bam, the next, hes gone.
I often wonder just how difficult it was for that family, not only through the unbelievable expense it must of cost them to transport their loved one all the way back home, but the heartbreak
they endured.
If you rent a car, or scooter, most are aware that the traffic is crazy there, and do so at your own risk.
You shouldn't have to ''swim in the beach outside your resort,' at your own risk........
While jetskis may be appropriate for some vacation spots, IMO, there's no place for them in Negril! Good riddens!!!!
Personally, I'm looking forward to a jet ski free beach in a few weeks.
I also heard that the snorkeling is better than ever since the jet skis have vacated the area.
If they can only get the horses off the beach now so no one suffers blunt force trauma from a leisurely walk down the beach.
Obviously; the jet ski operators can't afford the license fees, insurance, regulation compliance and central launch ramp/rental area. A logical business decision.
It's just not economically viable unless it's done on the shaddy/illegal side so hey-hey-good-bye.
The removal of the jet skis was the best thing to happen, and the horses on the beach should be next! I have seen several close calls of small children being run over by horses!
My wife and I hope the jet skis return soon. We enjoy the thrill of zooming across the sea and feeling the cool spray on our sun baked bodies! It's just one of the many things that we have always enjoyed on our vacation in Negril. Plus, it creates much needed job opportunities for many young Jamaican men that otherwise would have no positive income. A little noisy?...maybe...A likkle *smelly*?...maybe.
But, we just look at it as being part of the *beach scene* that we enjoy. And, we are in our early 50's, but are still enjoying the fun things in life! Bring back those wonderful machines soon!
Well.....just on this board it seems....and that's ok. You see, people enjoy their vacations in different ways. Which is ok also. Some of us like a likkle adventure and faster type fun. Some folk just enjoy piled up on the beach guzzling beer and smoking dope until they pass out and their guts get bigger and bigger and that's ok too. Everyone should be able to enjoy their hard earned vacation in the way that they choose, and that way we all will be Irie!
Jaherring...geeeez...that was passive aggressive...and you know this isn't the only board that you're in the minority on this topic. :)
I do agree with "everyone should be able enjoy their hard earned vacation in the way that they choose"...
as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else around you and the laws and regulations are in place to help with that....
Jaherring, might I suggest Pensacola for a great jet ski adventure.....I saw plenty of them there a few years ago...It's great there. You can't really hear them over the screaming kids in the water...If so many people want them in Negril why don't more folks rent them...The only jet ski riders I see are the hustlers buzzing up and down the swim line yelling at folks to rent them..
There have been many deaths from automobiles and motorcycles also, but I also enjoy both of those modes of transportation. Anything can be dangerous if not operated properly. you have to be careful and look out for the other person.
Folks don't rent them because they are not there to rent.
There are other parts of the island where you can rent them if you want them that badly. Please stop.
That was funny! look at the smile on that dudes face! Now he is enjoying his vacation!
Wow, self-centered much?
No problem with jet skis as long as they stay away from beaches where people swim.
I clicked on this thread because I knew who would be here trolling it. :-D
Maryann....I was waiting for you...lol....
Murph..lmfao.......I was totally hoping someone would come through...I thought it would be flip....
Jaheriing...maybe Negril is not hip enough for you...maybe you should strut your herculon bod at another destination , just saying !!!
Oh....lol...Negril is plenty hip! We love our vacations there and are planning our next visit!
