Re: Video Trip Report From Our First Time To Negril
Great Video and good choice of music!!
Herman is my favorite beach musician and I am looking forward to seeing him during our stay!!
I am a amateur blues harp player (some would say very amateur!) and have tried to jam with him in the past. I have to admit I have never figured out Reggae on a harmonica. If it ain't a 12 bar blues I am lost!!.
Maybe I should give it another go. After all I will be here for three more weeks.
Thanks for your post.

Ted

Re: Video Trip Report From Our First Time To Negril
I'm just an amateur on guitar too. It was difficult for me to figure out his tuning at first. He actually tunes down a half step similar to how Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn and other guitar greats do. I think it makes it easier for him to sing along. I'm not sure if that will help you on the harmonica or not, but once I realized that he was tuned down, everything came together for me.
I've found reggae to actually be similar to 12-Bar blues in some songs. For example, Stir It Up uses the same I, IV, V (A, D, E) pattern that is in blues music. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the advice Dan. I always carry my D Harp (second position =Key A) to Negril so I will have to download Stir It Up and start practicing!!

Man, what rad parents.... And it was really cool to see you playing with Herman. I brought him down some strings a couple of weeks ago, but I'm guessing he is still wearing out the old ones. Our first night ever in Negril was at Country Country as well, and it was epic. And your son, I think he might have enjoyed it more than you guys.
Great job man.....

Re: Video Trip Report From Our First Time To Negril
I'm feeling all of the positive energy from your responses ... Thanks a lot everybody! As April has stated above, we loved so many things about our trip, but the one thing that is standing out the most (now that we are back home) is the people. First, the other guests where we stayed were awesome. The hotel had a very "grown folks" feel to it, like, if you're smart enough to book a trip to Country Country, then you know how to travel. But mostly what I mean when I say "the people", is the people of Negril. We experienced so much kindness, respect, sincerity and hospitality from just about everyone that we met. All of the people that we met seemed to really care about what they did for a living and genuinely wanted to earn your business. I know that often times people complain about the beach vendors being aggressive but we found that there were very few that "crossed the line" and "bothered" us. Most everyone we met was very personal and friendly and many of them had a great product to sell. We bought fresh juice, fresh fruit and breads and cakes almost everyday. I'm attaching a photo of Lee and our son Bob. If you've ever stayed at Country Country, I'm sure you know Lee. He is a very kind man that exudes the positive energy that we felt from the people of Jamaica.

Re: Video Trip Report From Our First Time To Negril
We will definitely be returning to Jamaica! We've thought about it everyday since we've been back. But we're going to have to split our time between Negril and our first love - Akumal, Mexico. We got engaged and married there ... It's an incredible place too!

Re: Video Trip Report From Our First Time To Negril
We took our kids when they were young and they are now hooked/spoiled! Went on vacation to Hawaii in 2013 cause r/t airfare was only 300.00! What a joke that was and by no means any comparison to Negril! Won't make that mistake again!

Re: Video Trip Report From Our First Time To Negril
I wish Jamaica and Hawaii would switch places so I could have shorter flights and go more often

For real. It was 6 hours non-stop. That is the only thing about Jamaica I would change is the flight time. We travel 12 hours each way and that is not non-stop and assuming we can get a "good flight". I also wish Southwest would offer a route we could utilize. I see all these folks flying to Jamaica on SW now and I get jealous.

Re: Video Trip Report From Our First Time To Negril
Where the heck do you live? Iam in Oregon and we found a 10.5 hour flight for the fastest.. I thought we had it bad! Sucks I have no desire to goto Hawaii... Maybe if it was free

Re: Video Trip Report From Our First Time To Negril
One time I video taped Herman and he did" Rhinestone Cowboy". And I said "Man, Herman that was a great Glen Campbell song", and he looked up at me and said "Who?"

Re: Video Trip Report From Our First Time To Negril
Haha ... that's funny that he knows how to play and sing the song but doesn't know who it's by. When I was jamming with him, we had already played just about all of the reggae that I knew how to play, so I was trying to feel him out to see if we knew how to play any more of the same songs. I asked him if he knew any rock n' roll and didn't get much of a response out of him. Then I asked him if he knew any Beatles songs. That's when he started playing Imagine (John Lennon). I think I'm just going to have to learn some of the songs from his CD so that we can jam together a little more next time I go down.
