I heard that the JCF in Negril is shutting down street vendors (e.g. jerk barrels) after 9PM. Does anyone have any info on that? Seems like a bad idea.

This cannot possibly be true.
I hope you are right Stoners6. Someone on FBook posted that yesterday the police were rolling through announcing this over loudspeaker.
Facegossip, SMH
Exactly why I am asking the experts. Probably some nonsense behind it if there is any truth in it at all.
Sounds like a bunch of BS to me. I hope so at least, as barrel chicken and midnight munchies are synonymous.
If this is happening its gotta be something new. I was there til Jan. 5th and the vendors were definitely selling late nite.
We've heard many versions of this announcement and it's not quite accurate.
On the 13th of January...any vendor who has not shut down their business by 9pm will be forced to close and no doubt fined. This is because of the random scattering and number of vendors posing traffic risks etc. There will now be designated areas for these vendors to sell their goods after 9pm...don't get the idea that everything has shut down at 9pm in Negril.
When we hear more accurate detail...we'll let you know.
Thanks Lisa ~
were the vendors out last nite??
Not a rumor. Check The Observer. New police head for Westmoreland cracking down in Sav and Negril starting 01Feb. I will post a link tomorrow if noone beats me to it. Sad but he thinks this will help to fight crime.
He would be better served separating his ass from his chair and hitting the pavement. It won't take long to find the pond scum that is giving the local folks all the concern. Double the homicides and his predecessor is reassigned. Shameful h
I understand maybe people selling crafts, but the chicken man???
No late night music, no street vendors at night. Progress is one thing but this is stealing much of the charm that makes Negril the incomparable unique destination we all love so.
I would also like to know what all this means. I did read something about "designated area" for venders starting Feb 1 in cited Observer article, but was not specific. Anybody know where that might be?
No late night music!?!?!? So no concerts at Bourbon Beach??
That is going to suck not having jerk chicken all over the place. When we stayed at White Sands we just walked across the street when ever the mood hit us and we got our chicken.Same with all the venues going on,after a concert etc...,just hit the road and pick a barrel, that was the great part about partying late, there was always chicken close by!!
If there is no music we might just skip over Negril
We can try to do something about it. I just facebook private messaged my concerns to Damion Crawford the MP of Entertainment and Tourism in JA. It may start a discussion at least although I am a bit of an optimist.
They'll figure it out when it hurts the economy even more
that is totally unbelievable ! what's next ???
Just my .02 here; I'd like to see some further clarity on exactly what the plan is before jumping off the ledge myself... I agree that at a glance it seems rather over bearing, in Negril especially. We'll soon see, I guess.
I spoke to our friend who lives in March Town just outside Negril last night who is a driver. When I asked him about this he seemed to think it was starting in Sav la Mar as there are big problems there. Will be interesting to follow this story. I'll believe it when I see it. Maybe they are just wanting to clean up a bit, make sure everyone is properly authorized to be a vendor and such. I cannot imagine that they would eliminate all the live music and jerk stands, that would be a devastating financial blow to the locals.
Read all the posts.. Sorry I don't know how to quote
Not sure about the music scene. The Negril Entertainment Association NEA (RIP Kubba) has been trying to standardize the events (lower the bass, etc.) and it looks like there is some enforcement happening and justified protests:

These things have a way of shaking themselves out. There is an election coming up so (tin foil hat on) these things may be related to that...
Visiting in late Feb so I will maybe be a bit clearer on the situation after that.
It’s mentioned more than once in the article (directly and in essence) that Mr. White’s objective is to “Reduce crime and violence, rid the streets of illegal vending and restore general order.”
Therefore the focus of the police is weed out the illegal vendors in order to “curb crime in the parish”. Given Negril relies on tourist dollars and how some venues & festivities operate past midnight, it seems unlikely they would eliminate all street vending so early.
Their priority is Savanna-la-Mar so for now it’s a wait to see how or if there will be street vendor changes in Negril. Until then, eat, drink and be merry until official word is communicated from the authorities.
They have been cracking down on late night music for several years now. Must get a permit. But even permitted shows have been shut down early.
No I did try that but wasn't sure that was the correct button.. Apparently it doesn't work on my phone
I got a reply from Minister Crawford! He was not aware of the impending situation and asked for details. I sent him the Observer article and am pretty much done with poking at this.
Sometimes measures are taken that may not make sense to everyone...especially when we don't know what's going on behind the scenes.
There have been protests/demonstrations in front of the police station but they were fairly small...some in town are upset that the decision was made others simply understand that there was a need to rid some of the illegal vendors and some of their questionable activity.
Not sure if this is going to be a short term or long term solution....
I hope this does not hurt the small good food venders. I specifically want to try these guys next month and hope they are doing well:
1. "Mr Biggs" halfway between Shamrock store and Times Square shopping center
2. "Step Aside" near the Jungle property
3. "Smokey Joe" in front of the Grand Pineapple property
Biggs is actually just before you get to Kenny's Italian Cafe. It's not as far as Time Square. Excellent chicken. Had it 5 or 6 times last trip.
What constitutes an "illegal" vendor may I ask?
