Start with some Heptones, Jacob Miller/Inner Circle, Gregory Isaacs, Dennis Brown, Delroy Wilson, Toots & the Maytals, and some Lee "Scratch" Perry and King Tubby for some of the best Dub.

Slightly knows his stuff.
Some artists that he hasn't mentioned:
Old stuff: Hopeton Lewis, John Holt, The Paragons, Phillys Dillon, The Melodians, The Techniques.
Check out The Slackers for new stuff. Also check out The Bluebeats for some recent (mid 90's) stuff that is a throwback to the trad stuff.
A great comp that I have is "20 Greatest Hits of Treasure Isle Vol. I" if you just want to look that up and not have to do too much digging.
That's great SS but the question was "What artists were popular?" 30 or 40 years ago in Jamaica. Were jukeboxes still around when you first visited??? There are many artists and songs , I guess popular is subjective. Don't want to pick a fight here just saying!!! Read People Funny Boy by David Katz it's a Jamaican music encyclopedia.
Nothing to fight about ..here - at all...

That's why I suggested lookin' @ some Youtube channels - It's like a musical journey ...day in day out ..
