Wow, prices have skyrocketed. RT tickets from NYC are now between 800 and 1000 dollars for a late November trip. Sticker shock! When I was dreaming about a Thanksgiving trip a few months ago tickets were well under 400. I was contemplating a quick short getaway since we are getting extra time off over Thanksgiving--but I am going to have to hold out till sometime in 2012 now. Sigh. If anyone hears of any crazy-good deals, please let me know.
I know ......I still haven't gotten my ticket yet for Dec.....from ATL it's 800.00!!!!!!! for the dates I want, but I went out one day further and it's 622.00 DANG!!!!!!!
Humm. That seems fishy. I can fly Delta from Salt Lake City though ATL to MBJ round trip for under $800. I think it's maybe 1500 miles farther each way
It's gotten totally crazy the past few weeks. Over $1000 certain days from DC? Insane! Traveling different days are a bit cheaper, but not that much! This used to be a cheap flight! Glad we booked early, but have people who wanted to join us that won't be making it with these kinda prices!
yeah, it is over the top. I was going to do a quickie trip the Wednesday the 23rd returning Sunday the 27th just for a few days of R n R. But once you add taxes direct flights over 1000 and indirect (sometimes taking 20 hours!) over 800. I have never paid more than 400 for a ticket. So then I started thinking about Christmas as we usually take the week between Christmas and New Years off. But prices even more then! I may be priced out of my Jamaican travels.
when checking flights out of atlanta last month the cheapest flight had me flying to freaking Canada then to orlando then mo bay. ridiculous!
yeah the cheapest flights for me fly to panama city then MBJ! crazy. Then at Christmas cheapest went to Canada and then direct from there to MBJ--just insane to fly in the opposite direction for hours.
I think part of the trouble is the days I want to travel on are peak travel days--thanksgiving and Christmas/New Year
just found something a little cheaper. 659! Still quite high for me but in the consideration range. It would be a direct flight to MBJ from NYC but then on the way back I would fly to Kingston (where I have never been) in the morning, stay the night and fly home early in the morning and go directly to my work in NY from the airport. It might be kind of fun--if I could figure out a reasonable safe place to stay in Kingston and some place to hang out for the day. So I am not giving up hope--gonna try different combos and keep searching and may end up in Negril for Thanksgiving after all. If not Thanksgiving, then Christmas.
nothing fishy -- part of what drives air ticket pricing is what is available on the date you wish to travel. as the date gets closer, more and more seats are sold.... there are "blocks" of tickets offered at bargain price, blocks at the mid-price, etc., on up to full price. As the cheap seats sell off, all that's left are the more expensive ones. Add to that, on the 'peak' travel days, (especially around holiday times) prices start out higher, and sell off faster - then you have even higher prices being the only ones left as the date gets closer....
it's hard to know the exact right moment - do I grab up the ticket, or wait a little longer?? .... when you have to consider the balance of all these factors -- but it's not fishy, it's just the basic economics of pricing, based in part upon supply-and-demand. although the trend can be an educated guess (we know certain dates will be higher demand... i.e holidays - when demand is greater, supply is lower, and therefore prices are higher) - the customer really has no way of knowing at any given moment what the demand is for a specific date - so it's always a kind of dance to know when to push the button.
Now I think MissBlue sound fishy..haha;)
jetblue.com still has decent fares even for Thanksgiving weekend out of JFK. Best if you are flexible on days though, like it's just over $400 if you can do just over a week, Tues-Thurs.
Nonstop flights, great schedule (early in, late out), free snacks, free TV....can't beat it :)
Are you kidding me? Cheapest way for you was through Canada? Are you serious? We have THE most expensive air fares on the planet, I am convinced! How so? Today the prices are down a teeny bit. Air canada from JFK to Toronto (long a_ _ layover then to MBJ for $$635--892 w/tax. Ain't doing it!! Jet Blue would be near the same--$$775-842 w/tax. The dates I have are inflexible since I only get a few days off work. So I will keep searching but am resigned to going at a different time--not much cash to spare right now. If you don't mind flying out of LaGuardia, you might want to check Spirit Air's prices.. they usually have great deals - I would fily them all the time - but I hate LaGuardia!
I don't mind LaGuardia at all since it is close to me--only a 15 dollar car ride to get there in about 15-20 mins. I'll check it out
When did LaGuardia start having international flights? Or do you do the passport thing somewhere else, where you change?

You got me! All know is that we flew out of LaGuardia with Spirit to MoBay - there was a stop over - but I don't remember if that was where we did the customs thing.. I was too traumatized by the drive into LaGuardia - the ridiculous parking costs and the wild bus ride from the lot to the terminal to remember anything.......... that is until we got to Negril!!
LOL, gotcha. I think parking is really $$$ at any NYC airport, and i find Kennedy harder to deal with than LGA. Except the Jet Blue terminal :)
If you will consider LaGuardia, how about Airtran? AT shows each-way pricing details, you can control search by up to 2 days in each direction, and see what the cheaper flight days are. You can book them that way too, and since you are going November, use the BBH11 event code for 10% discount off the base fare - when you book through the event code office. Search this board for details on using that. You may also be able to reserve the tickets for up to 10 days before you pay for them. My experience with Airtran flying both domestic and international over the past 4? years has been excellent. Its easy to earn A+ Reward points and oh - see if you can sign up for the special before you book - it will earn you 2 Rewards per flight during a certain period of time - and it takes only 4 Rewards to do a check-in upgrade to business class. I could go on and on about Airtran, lol - sign up for their netsavers emails to let you know when they run sales, which lately has been 2-3 times per month, in my recall.
