Great Pics! Love me a West End walk. Deep West End, too!
As a beach person I always think the cliffs look like a walled city. I do appreciate your pictures though.
Yes, Sue it is kind of like that, but I just get outside the walls and wander.
I let the guard @ the gate know I will be a pain in the ass the next few days coming and going,
but I tell him I will make it worth his time.
Why pain in the ass? If I don't say anything to the guards on the beach they chase me down to ask where I'm going so they can record it.
I wouldn't be comfortable telling a security guard my plans, where I'm going, when I'm coming back, etc. I don't know why it's their business, and there's too much that can go wrong when people know you'll be gone, and for how long.
Can someone tell me why this is done? Is there a legitimate reason? What benefit could there possibly be, except for someone who wants to take advantage of your absence from your hotel room...
Because on the west end they have to open the gate to the road
and I leave the resort @ least 3-6 times a day.
Not sure what you mean by the guards chasing you down,
You must mean the all inclusives ??? - L 603

When I stay at Catcha, I'm constantly coming and going, having the gate opened for us. Never thought much about it, it never seemed like an issue, and the security guard never seemed bothered by it. Staying at Seastar next week, and plan on exploring the cliffs. I've always left Catcha and made a left, have yet to explore to the right because wasn't interested in going to Ricks...
That said, if we were to head in that direction (making a left when leaving Seastar, or a right from Catcha), what would we come across, and how far of a walk to those places? How far to Whoopies, Jus Natural, Wake and Bake? Easily walkable?
Ahhh... guess I don't need to know about Wake n Bake... sign says they reopen in September.
It's nice you compensate them for opening the gate for you!
Also, Yes, at grand pineapple. It's an accountability resource. I don't have to say when I'm coming back, only that I'm leaving. When I come in I check in at whichever entrance I happen to be at. It's their business because that's what they get paid for. Same as the guy who opens the gate.
The whole point of security is to know the comings and goings, right? I never see it as a problem, and if I never come back at least they know the last time I left the resort.
Sorry to detract from the conversation. If it's they guys job to open the gate... I didn't see why it was a pita. Just struck me, is all. Thanks!!!
Maybe it's just me and my paranoia, but I'd be worried that if the security guard wasn't honest, and you had valuables, it wouldn't be hard for them to alert an accomplice who could remove said valuables from your room if they felt they had the time to get away with it. If they know you're somewhere and will be gone long or late, it's an opportunity that can be taken advantage of.
Security is to keep me and my personal belongings safe while on the property, not to monitor your comings and goings. If you don't come back, knowing what time you left wouldn't be of help to anyone when it came to finding you. I don't think they'd even realize you didn't come back until you didn't check out at the end of your stay.
HarryS; probably about 5 minutes to Rick's Cafe a few more minutes to LTU Pub; about 15 minutes to the Lighthouse, 20 minutes to Whoopies, and 5 more to Out of Town Pastry. Wake and Bake. Don't Know. Never been that far.
Harry, the majority of the time it has been Catcha, and after staying there the last
9-10 years 2 times a year, I have yet to worry about things disappearing.
Also it was you and L-603 who said anything about where and how long I will be gone not me. Its not their business, and it would be stupid to do so
Harry, It's good you don't stay at grand pineapple then, because part of security keeping me safe is monitoring who comes and goes from the resort. I suppose if someone wanted to get into my room and take the stuff I haven't locked in my safe, they could do that any time of the day, wether I was physically on or off resort. At some point I have to trust that people are going to do their job. I also have to do what I can to protect myself by locking up my stuff, being aware of my surroundings and not divulging more information about my hotel/room than I deem necessary. If anyone has to open a gate for me to come and go, I can assume they are keeping tabs on that as well. I don't see the difference. I also have the answer to my original question, and don't see how continuing this conversation adds to the original post. Feel free to pm me! Thanks!
Wake n Bake is right after LTU, opposite side of the road B-4 Sir D's
Wake n Bake must be fairly new. I was there in January and don't remember seeing it.
I have no concerns at Catcha at all - stayed there a few times now and trust them completely. Great hotel, and the people there are a big part of the reason.
Other places I've stayed in Negril, while nothing has ever happened... not so much... Locks that don't lock well... slat windows with no screens that allow a hand to fit through, right near the door where you can reach the knob... but I'm aware and when I notice this I either ask to be moved, or take it into consideration and make sure that even if someone came in the room, with me there or not, they wouldn't get anything of value. Maybe I'm being paranoid, but there is a real possibility that a security guard who doesn't make much money, who watches "rich" tourists all day, might be tempted to take advantage if the situation presented itself. Yes, I know we're not all rich - I certainly am not! But, in comparison to how many of them live, in their eyes we are.
I was commenting on L-603 and his statement that he was expected to check in / check out with security. I've never experienced that in Negril, but did in Ocho Rios when staying at the Jewel Dunns River Falls... they didn't want you leaving the gates on the beach and made a big deal if you did. I don't think I said anything about Yamon specifically coming and going, and how long you'd be gone, more of just making a general statement.
While it's not a common occurrence, I've read stories of break-ins in Negril over the years, and to me it sounded like some of them could have been inside jobs... Not trying to get people riled up or cause a problem with this statement, as it's a fact of life at home or while away - break ins and theft can happen, especially if one lets their guard down because they're on vacation.
Love the pictures though, and if you have more please post them! If you could add in how far from Catcha the places are, that would be great too. I'll be there next week and hope to explore some of the places I have yet to see.
Enjoying the pictures of the West End! Harry, try turning right out of Catcha and take a little walk. If you're not interested in Rick's, keep walking right on by. Be sure to stop at Sir D's for a drink. The view from there is so amazing, and there's a young artist who sells prints there, very interesting to talk to. Also on that section of road is the old lighthouse, the LTU Pub, Out of Town Bakery (great patties!). We didn't go past the bakery, but it was a nice mid-day walk, and then that evening we turned left out of Catcha and walked as far as Xtabi. I want to walk all the way to the beach area, but there's one section when you're driving that looks like maybe cliff on one side and a concrete wall on the other side of the street, not leaving much of a safe passage for pedestrians, though I know people do walk it all the time. Maybe I'll just go for it next time and if I hit a spot that looks like the *scary place*, I'll check it out, maybe it's not so scary when you're walking as it looks like it would be when in the car. Anyway yes, turn right out of Catcha- several places you can walk to. Sir D's is definitely my favorite, walking that way. That view... *sigh*...
Oh, and speaking about worrying about things being stolen while you're out of your room... we stayed at Catcha and one day mid-stay I decided I wanted to wear a fused glass pendant I had made. I went to my suitcase and looked for my little jewelry bag (nothing of great value, all handmade stuff) I couldn't find the bag. I looked in the safe, I looked in the bathroom, the drawers, I looked everywhere. No bag of jewelry. Mind you, this was not valuable stuff to anybody but me- all things I had made. I couldn't believe anybody from housekeeping would have walked into our room and picked that little bag of jewelry to steal- would they??? I thought it must have been stolen by TSA or an airline employee. No, I was certain I had it in my carryon. Maybe I left it out of the bag at home? So odd. I fretted about that for a couple of days, just thinking in the back of my mind about what could have happened to it. Finally, on the last day of our stay, I was packing stuff up to go, and grabbed the large Tervis mug sitting on the counter- we hadn't used it the entire trip. It weighed oddly heavy. I took the cap off, and there was the bag of jewelry, right where I had stuck it to consolidate and save space. What a dork.
I'm thinking the same thing. Didn't notice it this past winter. So, it sounds like it's very close to Sexy Rexy's? I know there are plenty of old buildings that are easy to overlook, but they suddenly "pop out" once they are freshly painted. This Wake n Bake looks pretty inviting. Wonder if it's the same owners as the old Jam-Can Bridge.
BaileysMom, yes it is a very nice spot

Yamon- thank you for that refresher. LOVE your pictures!!!
Walk past rick's down to the lighthouse. It's a nice place for pics, and there is the "swings" place right beyond it. bunch of tree swings
You mean hammocks? Whoopies Hammock Park?
