Vacation.......... A noun or a verb?
Since mid January when I returned from Jamaica I have been counting the days after almost immediately buying the return ticket back home. During that time, people were asking, "When are you going home?" and others "When are you going on vacation again?" That got me thinking.
I do, after all, put everything I don't take in my suitcases into a storage drum. I use that drum later when I send it to Jamaica. The dwindling contents of the drum get used when I return to the states then I start the process all over again. I am thus "vacating" my apartment until my return at the end of this year.
It was the morning of September 28th and after checking in, I found out that my flight would be leaving an hour earlier. It has never happened to me before and I thought about Linston and whether I should call him. Why worry about it, I decided. I would just wait outside on a bench and people watch.
I zipped through Immigration and Customs and when I exited the doors I found a good seat to wait. I pulled out my Jamaican cell that had last been turned on in January and after it loaded the chip, I was surprised to find about $200 Jamaican from when I turned it off before entering the airport nine months ago. A quick call to Linston verified he was about 25 minutes out so I told him not to hurry as I was "kriss".
Before long, Linston called back and said to meet him at the curbside. A few minutes later we were on the way to a Cambio, petrol and on the road to Negril.
Each time I go somewhere with Linston it gets better and better. I like to chat up things that have happened since we last got together but then I just enjoy looking out the window. A true friend is one that you feel you don't need to idle talk with if you don't want to and sometimes I get that way trying to absorb everything about being back. Over the years, I found myself to be a visual person who experiences my surroundings like a video which I seem to be able to play back at will.
Near Lucea, I broke the silence asking Linston if he could stop somewhere so I could get a couple of phone cards before we got to Negril. A few chains up the road he turned into a market where a truck was unloading produce. I pulled out a G and he took it to go inside. He returned a few minutes later with two cards and the change when he told me he was going to buy a pear to take home. I handed him a Nanny and told him it was on me and to please pick one up for me at the same time.
Off we went through the spotty rain as the conversation turned to Hurricane Matthew. We were still discussing Matthew's path when we pulled into Y Worry Cottage where I will be spending a week before going home to Accompong Town.

Curious, how Linston is wise beyond his years.
I too, love riding with him.

Re: Vacation.......... A noun or a verb?
Entering Negril, the pavement was bone dry and it looked like the rain which hung over the morass never made it this far West and, if it did, it left barely a footprint to signal its passing. Negril is always so new to me as I rarely spend much time there so looking at all the places both new and established seemed equally as fresh and interesting. I noticed a few names of places I heard people on this board talk about and made a mental note that if and when I ventured out I would have to stop there and see what they were all about.
When we turned onto Breadnut Lane I started to get anxious to get settled in and have something to eat. I avoid eating after landing unless I can find somewhere that serves fresh fish and vegetables as I almost completly avoid meat unless it is all that is available.
Linston swung open the gate and he drove up to the cottage. Rasta Freddy, my good friend, lives at and manages the house but he was not there and instead up in the mountains at his farm behind Red Ground.
A Jamaican "yard" has a matriarch or patriarch who actually or de-facto runs tings and this yard is no different. Miss "Icey" (short for Icelene") runs things here. She called me over to her house and told me Freddy would be back soon and that I could relax on her verandah until he returned. I noticed that her verandah was in sunlight and the cottage verandah was in the shade so I begged we should get together later and went over to the cottage to relax in the shade after unloading my luggage and seeing Linston off.
I slumped up against the cottage wall as my 4:00am wake up was catching up with me and I soon found my chin on my chest lost in some daydream when I heard Freddy's voice in the distance. When I opened my eyes, he was standing right next to me. The distance of his voice was only the relative depth of my Jamaican daydream.
I got to my feet and hugged my Rastafarian friend. It had been too long since we last spent time together so I cherished this opportunity. Quickly the house was opened and the luggage taken into my room just off the verandah. While I was unpacking, Freddy poked his head in the door showing me the contents of the two scandal bags in his hands. Fresh ackee, saltfish, yams, plantains, bananas (both ripe and green) and I nodded my approval. "Nice dinner soon come", he said. Again, I nodded my approval but even more vigorously.
Any plans of this vacation being an action verb quickly dissapated once I finished unpacking. I opened the magnetic closing screen over the doorway and went outside, found a comfortable chair and put up my feet on the verandah wall. The last nine months I have been working seven days a week and up to ten hours a day so the unwinding of my mind was going to take all the energy thay I was willing to impart.

Re: Vacation.......... A noun or a verb?
The once occasional rattle of a pot or the scrape of a spoon was stiring memories of past meals and had me in rapt inticipation of a good meal that was soon to come. Soon even the occasional noise was being replaced by the waft of Jamaican spices that signaled the coming together of fresh foods and spices in a way only a Jamaican can do it.
The anticipation of a good meal was now getting the better of me so I decided to go to the kitchen and poke my head through the doorway to see first hand how a good cook practiced his craft.
On the way to the kitchen, I passed a table where Freddy had some of his necklaces and other pieces displayed. Freddy makes some of the most beautiful "natural" necklaces that I have seen anywhere. He mostly just makes pieces for friends but he will sell them if someone wants one. He will even supply the seeds and a mounting wire where you can make your own distinctive piece.
Attachment 46406
When I am in Accompong Town I often pay some youth to go out in the bush and collect some natural seeds for Freddy. Here on the table I saw those seeds fabricated into finished pieces. Cacoon seeds, Nickle seeds, Horse Hide and Lucky Beads are the main components of most necklaces many with a carved wood center piece like an Ankh.
Attachment 46405
Every type of seed has a story behind it. I don't know much about the Lucky Beads as I think they are just pretty and the Nickle Seeds are just called that because of their shape but I am going to look into that further. The Horse Hide is a tough nut and young children rub them quickly over their clothes and heat them up so they "burn" their classmates when they touch them with one.
Attachment 46404
The Cacoon Seed is very familiar with me as the Maroons have used them in many capacities over hundreds of years. The Maroons draped the cacoon plant around their head and shoulders to camoflage their positions along the trails of the British Soldiers during the war. The seeds contain a meat that after leaching can be eaten as food or used as a medicine. The most facinating usage is as a determiner of water quality when traversing the Cockpits. They would throw a seed in standing water and if it sank; the water was no good to drink. If it floated, the water was safe to drink.
Attachment 46403
Suddenly, Freddy surprised me with a plate of cooked food along with some natural juice flavored with tangy ginger. I was home now and blessings abounded.

Sounds amazing! I can practically taste Freddy's cooking.

Re: Vacation.......... A noun or a verb?
For the remaining days of my stay either "Hurricane Matthew is gonna mash up Jamaica" or "Jah no let Hurricane Matthew mash up Jamaica" was the main topic as I signed on at frequent intervals to show Freddy where the Hurricane was heading. I am a "science believer" and all the early information looked like big trouble but as the path drifted East, the power of Jah seemed just as possible a reason as frontal boundries, ocean temperatures and plain bedrock science that spared Jamaica.
The problem is that sometimes disasters need to happen to make people take all the precautions necessary to save lives and property. It was pretty obvious early on the Westmoreland would not suffer much if any damage so the rush for preparations quickly slowed to a "no problem" attitude. The question is that whether the next time a disasterous storm approaches, will people take it too lightly thinking that everytime Jah will protect.
I thoroughly enjoyed my mental wind-down time so much that when I could no longer multiply three-digit numbers in my head regressing to a point that I needed a pencil and paper to add up the cost of three bokkles of juice from Popeye the juice guy who stopped by daily on his scooter that I felt finally able function normally. It has been a week and I am ready to move on to Accompong Town.
I will be returning to Negril on a couple of more occasions this trip before heading back to South Florida at the end of the year. Freddy made me a special breakfast of ackee and saltfish with johnny cakes to send me off with a full belly. I was finishing eating just as Linston pulled up to the cottage. He brought along a scandal bag of Scotch Bonnets for Marshall.
With the past few days being dry in Negril, you might know we start hitting the rain around Little London and saw it on an off all the way to Lacovia where we turned for Maggotty and up to Accompong Town. A couple of hours after we started, we pulled into my home in Accompong Town and wouldn't you know it, Marshall wasn't there. What is it with my friends? Never being home when I get there?
We unloaded the luggage to the verandah and within a few minutes, Marshall came out of the bush from tending his fields. The time between my leaving in early January and now returning in early October seemed like only a blip on the screen of life. Like the current cut at night and when the lights come back on, life continues as before.
I am home where I belong.
"Negril Out! (drop da mike)!

Very nice Accompong. I spent a few nights about 15 years ago in the country and the view was nice but not as nice as that. Thats exactly the type of place i plan on spending my retirement years at. Just not sure its going to be in Jamaica though. I see why you love it so much

If I would not have been so fortunate to have stumbled upon Accompong Town some 25+ years ago, I don't know (or think) I would have chosen Jamaica as a retirement destination. I have lived all over the island and have found beauty and friendships but always with a fair share of hardship and challenges. Accompong is a very different type of place. Small and family-like where, if you are accepted, you don't just survive; you thrive. If I didn't have ties to work I like in South Florida, I would stay here forever.

Re: Vacation.......... A noun or a verb?
Good for you Accompong. I can tell by your posts about the place and those who live there that you not only love it there but appreciate it for what it is as well as respect it. Not everyone is that lucky so i hope you continue to enjoy it. I plan on retiring in the caribbean or with a caribbean climate and in a small comunity or rural setting like that but starting to lean towards some other countries where its a bit cheaper and most importantly has better healthcare but Jamaica is still an option. I love northern ontario but winters are long and i can always come back for a vacation when i want to make a snowman or go ice fishing lol. Enjoy your time there and please keep posting about ypur beloved Accompong.

Re: Vacation.......... A noun or a verb?
The saying, "Home is where the heart is" surely applies to Accompong Town as the things that alternately sadden and gladden my heart happen here. The elation I felt when Linston drove me through town on the day of my return home was quickly replaced by a deep sadness when I learned of two old friends passing while I was away. And, just last week, a neighbor I have known for twenty some years passed from injuries sustatined in a head-on Route Taxi accident near Cave Valley.
Loss of life sadness is a relatively new emotion for me as I can only remember a couple of times in my younger years feeling a deep sadness at someone's passing. What snapped me out of the low feelings was the unexpected visit by another neighbor, Bah Wood, bringing me two hands of ripe bananas this morning. A simple but honest gesture of friendship and family.
I am feeling excited as this week an old and dear friend, Mary, is coming to Jamaica for a couple of weeks. Mary and I have been best of friends for over 40 years and I haven't seen her since her last visit here a couple of years ago. We have traveled together around Jamaica several times over the past 15 years or so. We will be spending some time here at the house before returning to Negril for the final week of her visit.
I am really looking forward to visiting with her. There are just somethings that only old friends can share about the past that new friends will never understand.

Re: Vacation.......... A noun or a verb?
Last Wednesday, I went down the mountain with my friend and neighbor Troy to pick up Mary at Sangsters. The drive is two plus hours and the roads are nearly impassable in places. In fact, we did get detoured at one point and after driving around several roads and trails, came out only about 100 feet down the road from the landslide.
The rain coming out from the airport was the most rain I have ever seen in Montego Bay in one short two hour period. Three lane roads were down to one and cars were stalled here and there in all the lanes. We decided to take a longer alternate route back to Accompong Town through Cambridge and New Market. After a 4:00pm pickup, we arrived at the house a few minutes after 8:00pm.
We are having a wonderful time. Friends of more than 40 years have lots to talk about. Yesterday we went over to Rubber's shop for a cup of coffee but he was in the middle of harvesting the Vassilly Valley coffee.

Re: Vacation.......... A noun or a verb?
Well, my good friend Mary is back home in Washington and I am back in Accompong Town after a two week visit that I am sure we will both remember for a long time to come. For the first nine days here in Accompong Town we managed to find time to just sit and chat about years gone by but Mary has been here before so she spent a good deal of time visiting with friends she had made before and new people she met this trip.
Attachment 46617
Before Mary's arrival, we bought a verandah seating set with one bench and two chairs padded and attached to wrought-iron frames. Almost every evening her friends and some of mine showed up to chat and to show each other movies of their grandchildren. With camera phones, some things are the same in every culture now. I think this helped Mary from missing her grandchildren so much.
Attachment 46618
November 4th and it was time to go to Negril for her last five days. We were staying at Y Worry Cottage on Breadnut Lane, the West End. We got John, a local Route Taxi driver, to take us down and my best friend, Marshall, tagged along for the ride. The trip down was great as John had only been in Negril once before and that was more than ten years ago and everything was so new to him. It was almost like bringing a "newbie" along!
We pulled in around 1pm and soon we had everything unpacked and reassembled out on the verandah. I brought down five pound of vacuume sealed, roasted Vassilly Valley coffee beans grown behind our house for Penny and some friends along with some vegetables from the farm. Penny and Marshall had not seen each other in a long while so they chatted in one corner while Mary, John and I shared the other corner of the verandah. After about an hour, Rasta Freddy arrived from his farm just in time to say goodbye to John and Marshall as they headed back to Accompong Town. Before long, Rasta Freddy was in the kitchen cooking up a nice dinner for the four of us.
Attachment 46619
We don't go out much too eat but instead Freddy cooks when we ask and we have a friend Keith "Killer" (he is called Killer in reference to the "Killer Chicken" he makes). We just need to call him and order Jerk Chicken and tell him when we want in and it arrives with a Killer sauce in a bottle along with sides like callalloo and bread etc. I normally don't eat meat while in Jamaica but I will always make an exception for Killer Chicken!
Dinner was great. Rasta Freddy made a favorite of mine, coconut rice with pumkin and ackee along with a side of fresh callalloo. Now full, we retired back to the verandah and drank a cup of fresh coffee and caught up on when we were last together four years ago on my verandah in Accompong Town. Before we knew it, it was time to go to bed so we made plans for tomorrow. Another day like today would be just fine for all of us. 38 down and 51 to go.

Thanks Jitters,
It helps when you have almost all of Jamaica to draw from instead of just the bars, hotels and restaurants in one town.
And, I feel, the inspiration needs to be there as well. You were the "inspiration" for many of the Sea Lawn Coral Beach stories as I recall. It is hard to compare Pagee Beach with Negril Beach but you just had to be there, right???
I appreciate those who read and like them but I write for me. I just have to put the experiences into words to satisfy my need to put the movie running in my head into words.
Thanks again Jitters. Hope to see you up here in Accompong Town someday.

Thank you Momthor3,
Yes, Accompong Town is a very special place. I don't take a lot of pictures anymore because, when you live here, you have to "fit in" and not be a "tourist" especially pictures of people. As I said to Jitters, there seems to always be a movie playing in my head so I am able to sort of rewind it and relive it but it also compels me to write it down. Rob has been so generous over the years to provide me with a place to put them. Sometimes I go to the link to those old threads in my signature below and relive them again. Jamaica (especially Accompong Town) seems to be the only place where the movie plays all day and all night!

Re: Vacation.......... A noun or a verb?
Saturday morning early before sunrise and I just laid in bed listening to the muted sounds of people getting ready for their day on the West End of Negril. What was missing? Ahhh, it was the sound of chickens squawking as they fluttered from the trees where they roosted for the night to avoid a stray dog and the call of a she goat summoning her brood for an early taste of a mother's milk. I smiled a knowing smile that those sounds will go on in my absence and that for the next four nights I will miss going to sleep to the lullaby of crickets chirping and frogs croaking throughout the night.
Attachment 46631
No one else was stirring in the house but I can never seem to sleep in late so I quietly got dressed, opened the door and parted the magnetic curtains to the verandah and settled in my chair to await the sunrise and experience Negril waking from her sleep. One by one over the next hour my fellow housemates got up and joined me on the verandah. The smell of coffee brewing was coming from the kitchen. Time for a cup and to make plans for another day.
Attachment 46630
We decided to go to SeaStar for the buffett and show but when I called, I found out there was neither happening that night. Bummer. Guess we will just have to give "Killer" a call for his delicious Jerk Chicken to be delivered for dinner (His number is 296-1682 should you want to give him a try). We asked for a delivery sometime around 4pm and no later than 5pm so we could plan our day around it. We got two chickens (8 quarter chickens) plus sides of calalloo and bread plus a bottle of his special Jerk Sauce delivered for $4000 Jamaican. We tipped him another $1000 as he has no car and pays route taxi fares to get to us and he has to make a little bratta for his efforts.
Between entertaining some friends, reading a book and using the FLOW Internet, my day was full and then dinner arrived. We had so much food that we invited Killer to join us for dinner and had enough leftovers for chicken sandwiches with Jerk Sauce on Sunday.
Attachment 46632
Sunday and Monday were pretty much a replay of Saturday and we even decided to do the Killer Chicken again for Monday's dinner. We just couldn't find a good reason to go anywhere when we had almost anything we wanted or needed at our fingertips or within a close walk to a nearby store.
Attachment 46633
Tuesday would be Mary and my last night in Negril as she was going home and I was returning to Accompong Town on Wednesday. We finally made a plan to do something. We decided to go out for dinner on Tuesday night and we decided on the Canoe Bar. Who says that four people with five opinions can't decide on anything!

Re: Vacation.......... A noun or a verb?
Tuesday morning on the verandah felt strange. Long faces had replaced the regular sleepy-eyed faces of our group. This was our last day together and already the inevitability of parting ways was weighing heavily on all of us. The coffee was strong and was helping. Breakfast was easy as the leftover Killer Chicken was cleaned from the bone and liberally bathed in Killer's Jerk Sauce for chicken sandwiches with just a dab of mayonaise.
Mary and I retired to our rooms to start packing up stuff we wouldn't be using before leaving the following morning. Rasta Freddy was working on a couple of gifts for Mary on the back stoop. He had a coffee stick cane which he was finish sanding and polishing as well as putting the finishing touches on a cat carving Mary had chosen from his craft market stall the day before.
I finished up first and joined Penny on the verandah to share some coconut water with a shot of JB Rum when Penny asked me to give our friend Luther a call for a ride down and back from the Canoe. She reminded me that we should go early so Luther could get some fares to and from sunset at Rick's Cafe while we ate. We decided on 4:00pm as the time to go then I called Luther and arranged for a pickup.
We arrived at Canoe only to find it was closed for painting so Luther suggested we go across the street to Quality's Sea Breeze restaurant. I had always wanted to give it a try anyways so I was happy with the choice. When we got there, we were the only customers so we ordered right away and have some time drinking a beer or two before the food arrived.
The waitress was intentive to our needs and she was right there everytime we needed something. We had cold beers around on the first order but I got a Rum Punch on the second round. We didn't have a chance to talk with Quality until he finished cooking the meals and we were too engrossed with the delicious food to talk until after we finished.
We only managed to get three pictures of the meals so here they are. I normally don't eat meat (except for Killer's Chicken!) so I ordered a fish sandwich and french fries. I particularly liked the coleslaw in a lettuce leaf cup. Both the sandwich and fries were cooked to perfection.
Attachment 46644
Mary got Curry Chicken as she travels often to India and loves the curry flavoring. She remarked that the fresh vegetable selection was very tasty and the rice and peas she mixed in with the curry sauce was very good too. She said that if she were staying longer, she would be coming back for another meal.
Attachment 46645
Rasta Freddy, being a Rastafarian, ordered fish with fresh vegetables and rice and peas. He gave the meal good marks and said that only a very few places in Negril cook fish the way he likes it and that he won't eat anywhere that meat comes in contact with the fish. Quality assured him that he understands that and cooks fish separate from everything else.
Attachment 46646
Rasta Freddy suddenly shouted to a peanut man who was passing by the restaurant. He serves up roasted peanuts in a cone shaped wrapper made from a paper bag. I don't eat peanuts but Freddy bought one for me anyways. While they were lying on the table, we talked about how in the days before the readily available rolling papers, people used paper bags to roll a spliff. With that, Mary picked up one of the peanut cones and put it in her mouth and I supplied the lighter for the picture. Sure to be a classic with us.
Attachment 46647
We chatted with Quality for about an hour and I found we had a lot of friends in common both in Negril and elsewhere on the island. I don't eat out very often but this restaurant is on my short list. It was about dark and Luther pulled in to pick us up for the ride back to Y Worry Cottage.
We shared a last drink of JB and coconut water before turning in. Mary got up first and gave me a hug. She told me that this was the best vacation she had taken in a long time. I told her that it is always good to stay connected with those people who knew you best. After this trip, we knew each other just a little bit better.
We assembled again on the verandah to await my ride back to Accompong Town and Mary's ride to the airport from Killer's brother, Gary. Both drivers had agreed upon a 9:00am pickup time and both arrived together at 8:30am. I love it when people are early.
Goodbyes all around and we went our separate ways with a pledge to get together again as soon as possible.

I think we are talking about the same Luther. He has been a good, personal friend for almost 20 years. Actually, it has been a little cold here in Accompong Town the past three nights..... and windy too!

Re: Vacation.......... A noun or a verb?
Although I am very happy to be here in Accompong Town, I am so looking for a two week vacation in Negril in about a month from now.
I am glad I decided to divide up my three month stay between Negril and Accompong Town. I only wish I had put Treasure Beach in there somewhere!
Negril soon come!

Re: Vacation.......... A noun or a verb?
I arrived in Negril on Monday afternoon when I hitched a ride in a vehicle carrying produce to the Sav Market from Accompong Town. I am a little sad leaving my home in Accompong Town but I am also looking forward to my 13 day "vacation" in Negril at Y Worry Cottages https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/11178990

During the last 10 days or so I have been hanging a lot with a couple from Germany (Matti and Lena) and a couple from London who were staying at our house in Accompong Town (Kareem and Amanda originally from Chile). And when I got here, there was another couple from England who were from France originally (Eleanor and Brice). Normally a solitary type of person, I do enjoy meeting people from other countries.
I brought down a good selection of earth foods and with Rasta Freddy's cooking talents, some culinary masterpieces were coming from the kitchen.

I am going to get out a little more later tonight and tomorrow so I hope to have more to add then.
