anyone stay here recently? How are the rooms?
Thanks
My son and I are staying there in a couple of weeks for 3 nights. I have hung out at their sister property on the beach many times and have stayed at their (I think) former sister property- Coral Seas Gardens. They seem to be no frills/ perfectly acceptable hotels, and people I have met said that they liked staying there.
But then again, if it's in Negril, I am pretty content with just about any accommodations. I have stayed in deluxe suites at an all inclusive and funky old hippie hotels. All have been wonderful. Will let you know how it is when I get back
I've stayed there several times... I had a very reasonable rate and the room was very large with a very big lanai... beautiful ocean view... be sure to get an ocean view room as the rates are reasonable and some rooms don't have the view... very nice and well tended pool... pretty centralized on the cliffs with DeBar across the street that usually stays open pretty late...restaurant and bar as well... I really enjoyed my stays there... one thing that I did find a little weird was that the doors locked from the 'inside' via pushing the button... I locked myself out a time or two but I can blame the Stripes for that!
Thanks for the info.
We stayed there over all 6 weeks in 2013. It was great! I suggest you PM Rooster. He stays there all the time, long term, and has been for many years.
Hey Bostonguy, I have to ask - is lanai the same as patio? I have often wondered about this word.
No ! you can't speaking Hawaiian...lol......... yah mon, you need to get back to Jamaica mon !!! :)
Yes I've been staying there every year since '07 for or 6 weeks at a time (like Jan -mid March) & i.love the place....there are 22 rooms..20 are all on the sea & a spectacular view of it as well as the sunsets from your terrace or up by the bar/restaurant/pool area..which has one of the better pools on the West End...as stated nicely located by good places to eat & drink..the resort has great food also..a second floor room has the best view of the sea for sure..reasonable rates & nice a and quite boutique properly..... but one has the book early for that time of year because of high season.. looking forward to my next stay & seeing all my resort & local friends again..booked it in late September..it's the third property in the 23 years going there & always on the West End...my only regret is that I will wish I found it sooner
thanks rooster. do they have 24 hr security?
Yes, they sure do. We came in late a few nights and they were always watching the entrance, walks, etc. We stayed last Sept. and although it took a day for the charm of the place to hit me we ended up liking it and would stay again. If you are staying here it is likely for the view and or the price, both are hard to beat even by cliff standards. The breakfast is super cheap and one of the best I had the entire trip. The young girl that works her butt off at the bar is always amazingly warm and friendly. I snorkeled daily and saw a really nice dolphin performance that lasted about 20 mins. We really enjoyed our balcony, its nice and big and semi private.
I think with like all of Jamaica you just have to be realistic about what you are paying and what you will be getting. We had some European neighbors that came off an all inclusive and they hated the place. They were expecting all this service and amenities that of course just are not there. I traded them some Red Stripe for some coffee and we chatted a bit and I offered them some tips to enjoy the experience. The next day we saw them their entire mood had changed, they went across the street and had an amazing dinner and drinks at the jerk hut/bar and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
Unless we wanted to go all out $$$ and hit Rockhouse or something we would likely hit the the Sunset again.
Well said RonMon.. & my fault to not mentioning the security....i always feel safe there especially when i might be coming back from across the street from De Bar late..you won't see them but they're definitely there watching that property entrance from the darkness..& Stacy is the gal at the bar..she's a working machine...always making sure your good..cant wait ti see her too!
Have stayed there a few times and again next week for a few days. Price, pool, sea access, bar and rest makes it a great spot. Also, the staff is great. As others have said, manage your expectations, this isn't a mega resort.
Who is taking care of things at De Bar these days?
Eddie is..
Oh nice, thanks Rob, I'd heard he was abroad. That makes me want to stay at Sunset more :)
I agree ohliz..great to Eddies back
rooster - how do you find the rooms for 3 people (family)? Are there rooms with two queen beds?
Thanks, I haven't been down since March '15.
Actually, I have been disappointed in other resorts we've stayed at because the rooms are so big at Sunset. I'm pretty sure we had queen beds in the rooms. The balconies are a good size, too. I agree about the pool. It is one of the nicest, not just on the Cliffs, but in Negril.
As Rooster said - they're always watching. I watched Melvin steer a seriously drunk individual away from the cliff edge, and get him to safer ground one night. And on another night - well actually it was 5:30 in the morning - he gave my other half the heights of hell for being out on his own so late! He'd been worried sick about him. (G was fine, BTW - and had been in good hands). But Melvin didn't know that. I guess poor dear Melvin worried the night away when I came back around midnight! So, yeah. Absolutely. Security is superb. They really look out for you.
Melvins the best for sure..love that gentle giant
