Thank you for link. Very sad.
That's looks like its right behind corner bar.
There will probably be more news coming on this from official sources. These men were known in town.
I drove by several times yesterday and things were taken care of quickly and efficiently by the Police.
It was up the road from the Corner Bar.
This is really sad !!!
It happens everywhere.
fair enough, but its happening with alarming frequency in proportion to the population of Negril/Westmoreland. 'It happens everywhere'' cannot always be the cry when it comes to the issue of crime in Negril, imo.
troublemaker ...you are correct, the alarming rate that is happening in Negril, cannot be compared to a large big U.S. city, which I get so tired of that argument. they better figure it out, or Negril will become a ghosttown, this is a fact
Yep. And frankly these happen far more often than are shared on tourist sites. I like to use this as my excuse to be a daytime partier, however I have diversified my valuable vacation time as I no longer feel comfortable enjoying Negril after dark like I used to. Time to round of the D bags and make Negril Great Again.
Rob interested in your keeping it real thoughts about how tourists should react to this all too frequent occurrence of murder in Negril. thanks.
I love Negril, and it will always hold a place in my heart. that said, family living in Jamaica chose to relocate inland dues exclusively to the danger they felt in Negril. Not only my US-born uncle, but his lifelong Jamaican wife instead. She is here in the the us at the moment, and said just yesterday, matter of factly ''Hope they can get the crime under control so you can retire there someday'' when we were talking of Negril....and the comment came out of nowhere, as we weren't discussing related issues at the time. I understand sometimes things get blown out of proportion and it scares tourists, which benefits no one, but when residents chose to relocate because they no longer feel safe themselves, it gets my attention.
yes this happened yesterday at the place where mi get mi hair done.....sad mon
mi was out bicycling riding twice yesterday cause it was so beautiful out and was by this location hours earlier......
mi plan on staying close to home the next few days anyways cause it Christmas.....ocean calling mi name......lata
Cool Runnings, Marko
Sadly enough this is not an isolated incident in Negril or Jamaica . I have spent over 60 weeks in the course of 10-12 years in Negril . My days vacationing in Negril
came to an end 6-7 years ago with the shooting death of my long time driver while sitting at a restaurant waiting for his lunch . My time and money know goes to
Cuba . I never would have believed it 10 years ago myself . However as I am no longer a spring chicken I prefer the warmth and SAFETY that Cuba has to offer .
Say what you want about Cuba , but if you had to drop off your 16 year old son/daughter in Jamaica - Haiti - Dominican - Mexico or Cuba , what would your choice be ?
Although I was planning on more festive postings today, I want to address this most important topic since I have been directly asked. But before I get to that, after reading the above post from someone who is not returning to Negril I feel I must correct NegrilJail's information based on his own previous posts.
NJail,
Alfred Barrett was one of my best friends. He had been a friend who I talked with nearly daily for over 15 years. I never say this as some form of competition but to let you know my feelings run very deep. And I do not feel it is right for his memory to be used for a rumour.
On your last trip in 2012, as you posted less than 5 years ago, you had Alfred as your driver once again. In March of 2012, late at night, Alfred stopped to pick up leftover food for his dog at his usual spot and walked in on a lover's triangle quarrel that had escalated. He and the chef were both shot and killed by the third leg of the triangle who was subsequently arrested. This was reported on both TVJ and the Gleaner and the tragic bottom line is that he was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. This did not occur 6-7 years ago nor did it occur at lunch nor did it occur in Negril.
I have missed him these nearly 5 years and still think about him often. Michael from Michael's On-Time Taxi and I always mention him when we talk to keep his memory alive. He was a good man.
An experience for visitors in a country run by a military dictatorship is very different than that of any free country. Get caught doing something illegal in Cuba will also show you how different the experience can be for a visitor. Be glad you only spent time in the Negril jail.
BostonBob,
Excellent question. First of all, in a perfect world one murder is one too many, but we all must remember we do not inhabit a perfect world. The recent Berlin market terrorist attack and second prevented attack prove this all too well.
Second, is that perception is not always reality. What is this "all too frequent occurrences of murder" of which you speak? In this thread alone there have been mentions of double homicides in January 2015 (being confused with this one) and March 2012 (being used to mislead). There have been others I know of that occurred in the 2000's, 1990's and 1980's. But no one heard about these unless you were here.
The Internet has changed all that. Every homicide nearly everywhere in the world is photographed, videoed and uploaded in real time. Incidents both real or imagined are now posted on various places all over the net. This can easily skew one's perception making it seem more of an "all too frequent" situation. But the reality here is different.
Back in 1997 when Negril had half the population it does today, there were more murders than I can remember for such a small place. Crack was rampant then and with that came the killings. There were also contract killings and those arising from domestic disputes. But as today, there were very little foreigners at risk.
As I have stated before, the lotto scam is the main cause of the recent killings. It is so bad that foreigners are becoming involved as money mules. Recently a USA victim of the scam joined the scammers to get her money back. She was convicted and sentenced in the USA. Yesterday in the news, another round of scammers are heading to jail. The police are trying to do their part.
It is time to "round up the D bags" as Booger said or the locals will take care of it themselves. The execution style of the latest incidents seem to show pinpoint swift action taken against unsuspecting targets. These are not random acts or robberies. And definitely not directed toward tourists.
So, my advice is to come to Jamaica and Negril and enjoy but don't check your brain at the airport. Use common sense, don't get involved in things you shouldn't and allow the police to do their jobs.
Nicely said Rob and so true. Best of the season all and see yo in a few weeks.
rob, you know me. I have always been the giddy Negril traveler, but this last couple years the violence has been totally out of contro. as booger pointed out, there is more than even gets pointed out on this forum , I didn't even see in the papers an article about these recent murders, they are obviously trying to put a lid on it.... you don't have to check your brain at the airport, to gat caught in the crossfire of this craziness, you just have to be at the wrong place, at the wrong time, I myself just got back from Cuba 2 weeks ago, and it was refreshing not to have drugs crammed down my throat, or feel at all unsafe at any time, because obviously any crime against tourist there, is dealt with a swift, penalty, i see the head of police is stepping down, I hope the new one addresses the situation in Negril, the bikes are scary, the idea of walking on the beach road, something i use to love to do is scary, I'm coming back in February, mainly to see many wonderful friends, i hope Negril doesn't disappoint me .... Merry Christmas, and happy new Year to you and Lisa ~~~
I can't help but think of the old saying, ignorance is bliss.
I was completely ignorant up until my trip in June when I had a little run in on the beach road. All turned out ok, but to say I was shaken is a misstatement. It completely changed my perspective. Until that moment, however, I would have told anyone there is nothing to worry about... I have a different perspective now and really encourage visitors to take great care in their business... even when you mind your own, someone may have other plans. I will never walk the beach road at night again- mind you, it was only about 7pm when I had my run in.
It is totally tragic that people are losing their lives, but as stated many times, it's all planned - so these people are in some kind of bad business or are non-compliant with someone's demands. But we also know, you can be at the wrong place at the wrong time, and for that... there is no recourse. As an example, recently a visitor from the 603 had just gotten out of a taxi bus and another car slammed into the bus, which slammed into the man and he died. While not a bullet, one never knows when and where they will meet their maker. We must be vigilant at all times.
And frankly, if you don't like Negril, go somewhere else.. no one is stopping you! I am going one more time in April. After that, I will seriously consider where I want to visit next. It may be Negril again, it may be elsewhere.
ETA: I follow loop Jamaica on Facebook... they report a murder or something about a murder suspect every day, sometimes multiple times a day. i don't know how reputable the source is, but to me, I'd triple check any info I get from a Facebook page!
Livin, I have been coming to Jamaica since the mid 80's were you even born yet...lol.... you know I love you girl, the crime is very disconcerting, I have friends that no longer go because of it, they need to put it as a priority like now, before its to late ! Can't wait to see you in April, Have a Merry Chtristmas AND Happy new Year !!!!
I was born in 1980... but point taken. You know I love you, but if you don't feel safe, it's good that you are looking elsewhere for vacations. I am too! I have to believe the police are doing what they can with whatever resources they have... Because really, hat can we do about it? Ligit information helps people make informed decisions, I agree.. but what can we do? I know the local residents are very concerned about how this all affects the tourist industry. Go to a rotary club or industry meeting if you can. I went when the Miniater of Tourism was in attendance. It was very interesting and gives you another perspective. It's the locals who suffer th most from all of this, and we are so worried about our vacations. i know many of us are very mindful of how this affects our favorite drivers, hoteliers, restaurant and bar owners.
How can we be a voice for them??? How ca we make a difference that really counts?
I totally agree my friend, the best part of this message board is I have met some lifelong friend, you know ....... by the way, I was doing some last minute shoppin this morning, and I heard'''I'm on top of the world'' till my days in the nursing home, I will always think of you when I hear that song !!!! :)
Jojo,
I have been here a very long time and I dont have a choice but to always keep my eyes and ears open to what is happening in Negril and Jamaica. Of course some incidents are not reported here on Negril.com and not just because we are not an official news service. Some incidents cannot be reported even by the official news outlets as they are part of ongoing police investigations to get to the bigger targets. There is even more to this incident that I am not at liberty to post. It is not "keeping a lid" on anything as much as it is allowing the police to do their job. The extra information I have would make no difference to any visitor to the island anyway. What I have posted earlier sums it up.
You cant be naive anywhere. One of the amazing things about Negril is how giddy and free you can feel here. But with that freedom does come the fact that you will be offered drugs because tourists buy them. Prostitution will exist because the tourists want it. In Cuba that same freedom does not exist, thus you didnt get offered drugs, etc. although you will find the Cuban version for getting what you want. But dont get caught! Flying a drone in Cuba just got a Canadian tourist two weeks in a Cuban jail for getting caught.
Since you have been coming since the 80's, you must remember the "stockies" in the 90's that blocked the entrance to each West End Lane extorting money so they could get their next hit of crack. I dreaded having to go up certain lanes just to meet someone and having to deal with that intimidation. But those days are gone. And I heard the same thing back then that Negril was going to become a ghost town. It didnt and it wont.
As a tourist, LivinInThe603 asks how to make a difference. Well, if tourists stopped buying drugs, the illegal drug sales would stop. If tourists stopped paying for sex, the sex trade would cease to exist. For the lotto scam to stop, all it takes is hanging up the phone. But in the world we inhabit, I dont find this very likely to happen any time soon. With the freedom of Negril does come some responsibility.
Use legal taxis. Dont go to unfamiliar places without a good reason. Take a taxi at night. Never carry excess cash. Dont blindly believe anyone, local or visitor alike. Use common sense and enjoy yourself!
The link in the first post begins as loopjamaica.com, which is what I was referring to. I saw the same report on Facebook through loop Jamaica. Sorry to offend, but it's one in the same to me.
there is so much we don't know. And loop Jamaica reports a lot of crime based incidents. While I appreciate everyone's first hand perspective, each has their own bias. Let's be real here. I am not discounting any person or their point of view, rather, as I've been reminded of first hand, as with any incident, there are multiple points of view and always, the first release of news is often incorrect or incomplete.
I absolutely agree that people should be able to make informed decisions about where they vacation, but there is literally, a report every day about a shooting, a knife attack, children, women, killers, passerbys, people getting murdered.... so it strikes me funny when one incident flares a response. It happens every day. And I am the first to say I had my own strong reaction a few weeks ago. I am frustrated, like so many of us. But when I think about the big picture, is it me who suffers, or the people who have no choice but to live in this communitnies....
Thanks Rob! I completely agree with you!
Personally, I don't partake in any of the "illicit" trades. I had an interesting exchange with a man in the beach in June. In the conversation, it came up that he was from another part of the island. I asked him why he came to Negril to sell (whatever he was selling, in any case, I wasn't buying). He said, why shouldn't he. He said, people in US move to where the [work] is... why shouldn't Jamaicans. He makes the same point as Rob... if people buy, sellers will sell. I met more "out of towners" in June than I had in any of my other, though few, trips to Negril.
People are thrilled with their "Wild, Wild, West" until it hits too close to home...
Jojo,
You are under no obligation to answer that... (grin)
I know but I ain't tellin'
Cap
Nice camaraderie to read and long connections and friendship.
I find myself a little surprised … although I'm fairly new, I have felt connected for many years from a fellow Canadian resident. It is my time and I am going to partake. I do also have a few friends in the west end.
Good grief, I think we get good information from Negril. Thailand, Mexico … places I know well. I can also note Vancouver where I'm from. We joke (or jook as I just learned), hear pops you hit the floor. It seems for civilized here I'm sure, I'm thinking wrong place, wrong time … it's sad always. Be safe over the holidays and your exposure to the danger is largely up to you … I'll shut up now and cheers.
Wrong place...wrong time? A beauty parlor? I'd have to suspend my disbelief. Anything is possible...I guess.
I'm thinking it's not your thing … I'm also thinking you don't pack the shampoo. Warm regards. I enjoy your lightness. Nice.
:(.....?
Rob , thanks for clearing up the details , and I apologize for any misinformation , however the fact remains the same , wrong place wrong time , as you yourself have said . My point is exactly that .. take the place out of the equation and no worries about the time . I'm sure you know all the facts regarding the ouster of the USA's puppet leader Bautista in Cuba , hence most Americans ignorance of Cuba in general . To place an embargo on Cuba yet swing the doors wide open for China seems hypocritical in my view . Both military dictatorships , no ? Breaking the law of/in any country has it's own repercussions . It is a travellers obligation to know the rules of the country they are in . Guns and drugs are a HUGE no-no in Cuba , most folks (Canadians-Europeans) would take comfort in this fact .
I regress .. but I stick to my survey .. where would you drop off your 16 yr old child .. Haiti - Dominican - Jamaica - Mexico or Cuba ? nuff said
Merry Christmas to all , and to all a good night . Travel safe mi friends .
This topic is addressed every time there is another act of random violence, wrong place at the wrong time..... in Negril. I had noted in an earlier posting that Cuba is poised and willing to welcome the tourists who had former love affairs with Negril / Jamaica but now think otherwise. For those of us old enough to have witnessed the changes in JA since the 70's / 80's the epidemic as I see it is tied directly to the cocaine and gun influx started during the JA political cycles. Our recent elections in America, although so far have not resulted in out right election murdering like in JA in 76, 80, but have shown the huge split of thought and behavior that most did not think possible. Yes the Lotto Scams have recently fueled the gunfire but there is a deeper psychology at work in JA, USA, World that is trying to undermine the good and righteousness of the human race. The accessibility in JA of guns and the willingness to use them has in many cases caused us Negril, Jamaica lovers to consider elsewhere for vacation or move inland in the case of those living the dream.
God almighty I hope we come to our senses!!
Sounds like the nearly 100% increase in murders around Westmoreland has prompted a Peace Conference.
http://jamaica-gleaner.com/article/w...ce-set-january
Hopefully it helps this very sad situation!
Negrilmon...Visiting since 1975
amen
The above article from November 29th does not actually state the parish of Westmoreland has prompted the Rotary Peace Conference. For those unfamiliar with the parish, Negril is a very small part of the parish, with about 7000 residents of the 160,000 residents in Westmoreland which includes the capital of Sav-La-Mar..
The article does state "Data released by the Jamaica Constabulary Force show that three of four parishes in western Jamaica, that is, Westmoreland, Hanover and St James, have seen a spike in murders for the first half of the year, when compared to the same period last year..." which has prompted the conference.
The parish of St. James (about 180,000 residents) which includes the capital of Montego Bay is unfortunately the centre of the lotto scamming which has increased the numbers substantially. "With more than 260 murders so far, and another four days to go in 2016, St James is set not only to retain but extend its unenviable reputation as Jamaica's most murderous region" and "Lottery Scamming Capital - Located on Jamaica's north-west coast, and the home of some of the island's top resort areas, St James has, over the past decade, become known as the epicentre of the lottery scamming business and the violent crimes associated with.":
http://jamaica-gleaner.com/article/l...ents-lose-hope
The parishes of Westmoreland and Hanover have also seen an increase associated with the lotto scamming. We all hope that this scourge can be stopped. But it will take work on both ends.
