Re: Forum Content Discussion
Carrie, Internet forums in general are private. This is Rob's place. Things posted here are not public or protected free speech, they are things being posted on Rob's site. As such, Rob certainly has the right to set the terms of use and to limit discussion to things he deems both appropriate and civil, just as he would if we were visitors in his own house. I think this is made quite clear in the forum guidelines and FAQ. I know many people use the word "censorship" to mean "you won't let me post what I want on your Web site." However, that's a misuse of the term. Anyone is free to set up their own Web site with whatever rules they want. Censorship would mean not allowing you to do that.
Any of us may believe that what we have to say is really important for others to hear. That doesn't mean Rob has to agree with us, or supply us with an audience.
While I too have seen things posted that I considered harsh, I also know that people have a tendency to read a completely unintended "tone" into a message. My own writing style tends to be quite blunt, and I have several times had people take offense to a message that I thought was a simple statement of fact posted in response to a question.
I find this forum to contain vast useful information, and in general to be extremely well-moderated to keep everything friendly and on track. In the forum guidelines, it makes clear that this is not intended to be a Jamaica news site, and offers suggestions as to where to go for news. The news sites have their own comment sections for discussion of the latest events. This is not the only site I check when I'm planning for Jamaica; different sites have their own focus.
Re: Forum Content Discussion
Thank you and I sure hope I did not come across as not appreciative of all the efforts. Or lacking respect. Kudos to all. My background is marketing and communications and perceptions are all mighty. I just mention that there did not appear a place to air frustrations and they appeared willy nilly in other threads by members … that is all I offer. I very much admire Rob and all those that give their time and effort and support and fun to have such a community of camaraderie and much needed assistance to fellow tourists. Warmth and a huge thank you to all.

Re: Forum Content Discussion
Same as it's been since the beginning. Rob's board, Rob's rules. As it is a business he has a responsibility to his sponsors as well as the members. They are what pays for our ability to come here and share our love of Negril.

Carrie from Vancouver, some very interesting comments!!! Something about Canadian thinking that sometimes makes sense.
I don't know anybody on this forum personally and have not visited Negril for several years but I must say I enjoy the positive vibes (most often), great photos, points of views and ideas put forth.
Negril and Jamaica are very dear to me and I have visited many times over a long period of time. The Negril.com forum allows me to relive and revisit a wonderful place from my past which often times gets me through a tough day. Let's face it the world has changed drastically and in many ways not for the better.
Rob and bnewb have done a nice job trying to keep many people happy which is always an impossibility. What is proper for a forum??? Who knows but I am happy to escape here when old happy memories are desirable over the current and sometimes scary reality of today.
In conclusion to all of you who participate and try and make life better and happier for us all through their contributions, Thank You!!!!

I thank you for the gentle honest feedback. No need for the speakeasy. Wisdom and joy of the history experienced here and to all sharing valid gospel now and in the future.
Re: Forum Content Discussion
Not sure exactly what this post is about... but I got to say I like that Rob takes great length to ensure we have the correct information as possible. I fell in love with Negril over a year ago, but got married in Ocho Rios and been to JA 6 times so far. This board was the beginning to our trip for 10 days in Negril and the information read here from all the boardies (personal preferences, experiences etc) assisted me with my choices, or gave me insight.
Sure glad this forum is not on facebook, because it would be a joke, and misleading information, or some very strong view points that may not be necessary..
Keep up the good work, I do not post a lot, but read this site everyday while working ! Wishing I was in Negril.
I love reading the stories, the funnies, and everything in between :)
Cheers !
Re: Forum Content Discussion
I've never been to a "boardie bash" and likely never will - because we simply aren't very social and these are the 3 weeks that are for "just us":) I don't often post but when I do it is to provide information to those who come to the board. I get wonderful information here that is always accurate - a great example is when the ATM didn't give me money but debited my account, I was in a panic until I came to the board where I was assured that the debit would be reversed and it was:) Likewise I try to post information that helps others when I can.
I don't come here to argue - if I disagree with an opinion, I usually just keep scrolling past those posts. I do worry about the people who want to come on the board and talk about shootings and try to scare people away from visiting. We often fly here out of Chicago, IL and we have a much greater chance of being the victims of crime there than we do here. So my best advice to you and everyone else - use the common sense that you have been blessed with whether you are on the internet or on the ground:)
