When you first plan the trip how much do you budget all in? (round numbers, no detail)
When you get back did you spend more or less? (yes or no)
Just interested in some data if you don't mind.
Thanks

Good question Cap. Over the years I've said "I got to make a record of all I spend on two weeks in Negril". I never have after 25 years...too much work to be on vacation. Same for quibbling over the exchange rate...tiny fluctuations. We usually take 5K for two weeks. I tip generously and often. We spend and enjoy.
We always come home with a couple of K... wife is pulling out twenties from the envelopes we brought down months later..."Is that still Jamaica money...?"
We have perhaps an irrational fear of being "short of cash" in Negril. Maybe next year I'll itemize...maybe not. :p
Just figuring out how much cash to bring, leaving Friday for 8 days, hotel is payed for. Figuring $200/day (2of us) for food and drink, $500 for transportation and $500 for treats
Well, my rule for cash to Negril is: Lay out all the clothes you are going to take and the cash you are going to take on the bed and...take half the clothes and twice the cash.
200 a day sounds reasonable.
As a budget traveler , and about 20 years of winter getaway adventures , our averages as a couple : 1 week 2000 to 2500. two weeks 2500 to 3500 third week 3000 - 4000 4 weeks 4000 . 4 weeks coming up I'll let you know . we usually bring money home but not always , This is all in travel inclusive .
Spending money (not including hotel, airfare, and CMB): This year's plan: $500 for 7 nights/8 days (budgeting additional for an excursion this year).
Philosophy: I'll pay what it costs. I eat mostly on the beach so prices can be a little high. Just saw a place with a cup of coffee for $3.50 us. That's ridiculous, so I wouldn't buy that, but I don't go crazy trying to find $4 breakfast. I plan on $10-15 a meal and get what I can for that price. If it's less, that's great!
I have a breakdown of planned expenses if you're interested, but you said no details, so I think this is a discussion starter... great topic, thanks!
Some trips we do for as little as $2k, some go up to $5k, just depends what kind of trip it is. But $5k is about the most that I can stomach spending on a vacation. That's usually between 8-12 nights, air, lodging, food, everything.
We budget about 200/day for the two of us. However, many days, we don't hit that number. Somedays - depending on the dinner location - we might go over a bit, but that's seldom the case. We don't do too many excursions these days, so that's not an issue.
Saeyedoc - 500 for transportation - is that including an excursion? Or is that for taxis?
We average about $120/day for 2 persons plus hotel and transfer costs. That's been the case over last few years. We enjoy a lot of bheer.
Captain, just to clarify; you're asking for total trip cost, right?
@TAH - oops. Guess I should read the whole post....carefully.
We try to spend about 1200 ca for flight & 120 ca for hotel , then 100 ca per day spending for 2 , mostly buying our own booze by bulk & cheap eats
Jenn, it was just a general comment, not to anyone in particular. I just only saw one person give a total, with no details of breakdown (was how I read cap's query), and wanted to make sure I was reading it right.
Cap: a business plan in the making? If so, I like it very much.
I didn't take offense...just realized my mistake in reading after I read your post. And ..I taught middle school English for years. Awesome. haha
$120+ tip RT from Mobay. $30/day or so for taxis. More like $400 I guess.
For the two of us $200 per day including hotel, transfers and food. Almost always bring home extra. Airfare additional.
Regards,
Bob
Saeyedoc - thanks. We pay for our private transfer upfront - so I've already paid for it now...haha, therefore, I wasn't including that!
We spend between 800-1000 on Air. Round trip, includes both of us.
120 or less on hotel accomdations. 800 is usually average for the length of time we stay.
80 each way for the cab.
140 a day for food and fun.
Let's call it 3000 all in for a 7 day trip.
6000 for 16 days is what we spend average that includes all rides, Hotels, and spending and a lot of times we come home with 500 to 1000 depending on how hard the party is!!!
Air: non Holidays $400 - $500; Holidays $700 - $800
Hotel: $200/night for 2 bedroom which is shared with with friends/family
Spending Money: $100 per day
Transportation: $25 each way
We budget $250 a day. This includes private car round trip airport transfer, food (moderate), booze (lots), tips, a couple trinkets, and an excursion or 2. Always have a little left over. Air and hotel separate.
Air, hotel, food and fun we usually budget about $5000 for 8-10 days.
This year we are staying at GP and the fololowing is our break down:
GP 8 nights $2100
Flights $1000
Spending $1300
Total $4400 but I do have extra to pull out with ATM if needed
I usually come alone and meet up with people there. Outside of trip cost and transfer, I usually budget 200 a day..,that is for food, taxis, booze, subs, etc....some days less, some more... that's factoring in a tour and other outings like glass bottom boat, concerts, tipping and any other incremental expenses. Yeah, can be done for less if I tried but I'm on vacation
Bottom line is there's a big range, you can eat cheap box lunches, patties, use your own booze, etc on one end to eating lobster out every night and paying for excursions, boat rides.
Lobster every night...? Maybe every third night...oh yea! :p
Had a perfectly cooked lobster a the SPA Retreat on the West End...Dec 1.
I usually budget $100/day for food and drink for myself while in Negril. I had that budget for 10 days in early Dec and came home with about $100 in my pocket. I would say half the nights I do a cheap & easy meal , like at Best of the West. The other nights I went to nicer places. I also buy Rum and Coke, Stripes at Mikey's stand to take down to the beach during the day to ease the cost during the week (saving the bar drinks for night time). Since I tend to book trips a half a year in advance, the costs are seasonal (since flight/hotel get jacked in the winter season vs off season) and I don't really have a budget for that since they're paid for so far ahead (put it on a credit card and pay it off). But all that said, Off Season I figure about $1000 flight/hotel staying at whitesands off season and $1400 flight/hotel during the winter season for 8 nights there.
I would put us in the $250 to $300 a day range but most trips we come home with 2 or 3 hundred left.Buy beers and booze for the room and for around the pool sometimes but we spend lots of time on the move buying drinks all over Negril and on the westend.Of coarse we have to party on the one love bus each trip also!
Had to edit to add that we do start partying by 10:ish every day and many mornings our Bed time is between 2 and 4am,that does raise the cost just a bit!
Well, even if Dave doesn't get the info he was after (lump total, no details), it made for a good social experiment I guess.
Thanks for all the input guys.
I'm just collecting data for a business plan. Also wanted to know what it would cost if I stayed in Negril as opposed to at the yard.
Thanks again
Cap
We normally stay all inclusive so all in with air/hotel and spending money for 10 days I budget for $6-6500
Generally I do not end up spending this much.
This year we are staying 3 nights non-all inclusive so we are saving money there. $1000 of that budget it for spending money and never in all of my trips have I spent all of it. We generally come home with $3-500 left over.
3 adults and 1 child staying at Negril Palms. We are budgeting for $200/day in cash to be spent on meals and entertainment in Negril. I suspect that might be high, but rather have too much than not enough.
Airfare was $2200, Car will be about $200, including gas. Hotel is $1100 (10 nights). So that's a little under $6k
OOps typo !
$500 and it's for 8 days (don't ask) $429.55 plus gas. classiquecarrentalsjamaica.com
lol, no problem. Thanks for clarifying that up. lol
We spend about $100 a day, usually less since I bring many quick meals with me and head done to Value Master for perishables and beer....Our hotel for the 10 days is $900 and 2 plan tickets were $440 each....actually I think we get off pretty cheap for Jamaica.....
That's one of the cool things about Negril, you can get rooms for <$100 a night or >$1000 night. Cook your own and eat cheap box meals, or go out for lobster.
