Check In vs Carry On....?
Are you an overpacker check in or carry it all on kinda person?
Name (1) Unusual thing you pack that's makes people question you about it..like why did you bring that:confused::)
Carry it all on...no time to wait for luggage if it doesn't fit it don't go...lol
Everytime I mention I bring my "Portable man" folks ask me why! well the answer is obvious! :p

We are planning on bringing an inflatable air mattress this time so we can get 3 adults and 1 7 year old in a single hotel room. By the way, does anyone know if they can be purchased in Mobay? Might make sense to buy there and leave behind

Re: Check In vs Carry On....?
Knife, always. A few tools, usually. Liquids > 3 oz. Usually spare machine parts for friends who own a house and spend winters down there. Once, a backpack fire extinguisher. Once, a large wok.
It's easy to say "just buy it there", but I don't want to spend any time going from store to store looking for something that I already own and can just throw in a suitcase for free (I get one checked bag for free).
-
Re: Check In vs Carry On....?
Always carry-on. Besides the cost savings (like just the return flight baggage fee pays for, oh, Club MoBay), I like saving the time when I leave Jamaica. If I don't have a bag to check I get to go to the kiosk to check in and in two minutes I'm on my way to security. Checking a bag means I have to wait in those awful lines for a person to check me in...no thanks, I'll spend that hour in Jamaica doing fun stuff!
As a matter of fact, the flight out was very full so they asked for volunteers to check bags and we did - right at the gate, no waiting, no fee. That I'll do if the opportunity arises.
This last trip I had a wheeled carryon and a backpack and still brought too many clothes (on a 10 day trip).

Re: Check In vs Carry On....?
I don't need much so everything fits in a carry on. My wife on the other hand needs a full size piece of luggage for all her stuff.

Re: Check In vs Carry On....?
I check luggage and bring the biggest carry on that the particular airline will allow. The checked luggage usually has a few gifts or requested items for long time friends.
One time I packed three pair of blue jeans, can't recall why, but I never had a chance to wear them!!! :)
Since 1992 I have never had customs pull me aside or check my luggage. Very lucky!
Enjoy,
VVHT

Re: Check In vs Carry On....?
Cap, are you talking leave it all there when I leave to go home, yes sir... I do !
Security gets any leftover booze and Red stripe, I leave housekeeping all the lotions and things, I even gave my housekeeper last year my DVD player, and movies,
floaties stay behind for other guest, clothes is the only thing that comes back with me !!

Re: Check In vs Carry On....?
I am a man.
Still, I need a big ole suitcase/luggage.
I bring a zipper cooler that is filled with just:
Soap, body wash, bug spray, mouthwash, flashlight, incense,
spray Lysol sanitizer, wash cloths, towels,
after shave lotion/cologne,
rolling papers, snacks,
tooth paste, tooth brush,
Body lotion, mini-first aid kit,
extra batteries, lotion, sun block, razors (maybe), little radio/cd player.
This I put inside my luggage bag.
Then there are shorts, swim trunks, t-shirts, long pants,
long sleeve shirt, sandals, gym shoes, socks, under wear,
hats/cap, towels, sweat rag.
All this inside the luggage bag next to the cooler.
Then the carry on with:
Laptop, more snacks, I.D./wallet,
keys, $$$. sweat rag, extra sun glasses,
reading glasses, J-cell phone.
Not to mention gifts for the kids and Fam. in Jamaica.
But, as you know everyone is beautiful and different and like
the blast from the past Stylistics song:
"People make the world go round", what a jam!

'Spoon et al,
The red line is not that bad. It's either personal use or it's not.
It's personal if you keep it at your domicile. If not pay the duty

Re: Check In vs Carry On....?
Gooodness, I must check. I have one bag full of kitchen things. Knives, spices, teas, tea pot.....the list goes on. Always some sort of necessary item for a friend.
Once I did return with only carry on. i left behind shampoos and lotions. That starts to add up though so that won't happen again.

Re: Check In vs Carry On....?
The wife and I both have one checked bag and carry on and sometimes backpack each. But we bring school supplies, gifts, once a case of backpacks to give away and last reach we brought 50+ musical instruments for the kids. I would feel guilty bringing just a carry on. That would mean we didn't bring anything to give away!

Re: Check In vs Carry On....?
Instead of spending the extra money on kitchenette, I pack my own ie.....single burner stove, hot pot, small pan, small fry pan and spatula. plates, bowls, utensils, small fan when ac doesn't work, small collapsible cooler for when promised fridge fall through, an extra towel......I actually pack everything but the kitchen sink.....too many years with unexpected surprises I guess......then I leave everything behind for cleaning staff (they always know when they see us that they are going to be taking home a bunch of goodies when we check out).....and it leaves my suitcases with plenty of room to bring home several bottles of banana rum cream....

Okay darling, a couple questions, how do you get bottles past security in your carry on, and how do you survive 9 days with those mini sized lotions, hair stuff, skitter spray, and all the stuff that can't go into carry on, except for the little bag they allow, we have never discussed this over cocktails ...lol

My badd I don't pack my bottles in my carry on I just carry them on from duty free on my direct flight and I don't have hair products because my hair is usually braided remember?! lol...I bring (2) bottles of bath wash, (2) toothpaste and (2) sunblock (You know I hide from the sun) so dont need much of that! WE must add this subj to hour cocktail talk!:)

Re: Check In vs Carry On....?
I check one bag and bring a small carry on.
I don't pay for luggage, and I don't mind waiting in line if it means I have everything I need right there with me. I'm on vacation, I'm allowed 50 lbs (my case is usually about 35 pounds when I weigh in) and I'm waiting in line anyway, so I don't skimp on what I bring (I'm not excessive, but it's not like I'm backpacking, yuh know!)
I don't think I've ever brought anything unusual, but this year I want to bring some solar powered twinkle lights to decorate my patio, maybe.
-
Re: Check In vs Carry On....?
Livin, are those lights to help guide you home at night so you don't walk into the wrong place.....hehehehehe

Cash takes up very little space and I haven't yet had a maid, driver or other service industry person refuse it :)
That said I did bring a couple of things to give specific folks...a decor item for a newly opened place, some solar lights for someone else. They fit into my carryon just fine.
I use a lot of bug spray and so far no problem running out. This past trip there were 3 of us and we each brought travel size shampoo, conditioner, Off, sunscreen, moisturizer (everything else is "solid" so no limit - lip balm, soap, deodorant etc). 10 days later we had leftovers of everything. In fact they sell bug wipes, powder shampoo and similar products now, none of which are subject to carryon limits.
To each their own, there's no right way to do it. But for me, carryon only for the 3 of us saved $150 - an entire extra day in Jamaica. That plus the time savings at the airport makes it worth it, to me, to pack carefully. It also makes going from place to place easier, we move around a lot.

Re: Check In vs Carry On....?
I think couple of people have taken my comment the wrong way. By saying I would feel guilty bringing just a carry on because that would mean we didn't bring anything to give away, I meant we didn't anything to give to the children. In the past we have brought toys, school supplies, back packs and musical instruments.
Cash works for everyone else. But I hate seeing people handing cash to the kids. It's like teaching them to beg from tourist.
No offense was intended to the people that just being carry on bag. I was speaking only of my own feelings.

Re: Check In vs Carry On....?
On a side note, I found the one indespensible item I must bring to Negril....Pedialyte, yep.... It comes in powdered form as individual packets .....Greatest thing for a hangover....better even....hangover prevention! They come in flavors and I found myself mixing them in with vodka sodas... In between the stripes...Emergen-C works well too....

Great suggestion! I will stock up!

Re: Check In vs Carry On....?
Heads up if your only option is AA. While double checking baggage limits yesterday, end of February, $25.00 fee for using the overhead bin!
-
Re: Check In vs Carry On....?
they are getting really unreasonable with that stuff. it makes no sense. i might suck it up and pay $25 to use the overhead bin IF i could bring on full-sized bottles of liquid, but i'll just continue to suck it up and check bags when i travel to the caribbean- i need to bring full-sized bottles of bug spray, sunscreen and conditioner and prefer to bring it from home.
we're flying first class on american next month, so best believe the three of us be taking advantage of the 2-per-traveler luggage allowance.
i don't think we'll get crazy and actually check in six bags and bring six carry-ons (we save that type of insanity for when we go back to haiti), but i'm not curtailing the amount of floaties or balking at the gigantic size of the bottle of bubbles my 10 year old wants to bring.
i might even take down some cooking-related items that i don't feel like paying inflated prices for at the hi lo. the cottage we have for the last 5 days of our trip has a nice, full-sized kitchen. i want to make some lobster pasta while watching the ocean out my window!

Re: Check In vs Carry On....?
If we are traveling non-stop both ways we check luggage and bring more. If we are having flights where we have to change planes then we often go carry on.
On a non-stop I don't have to see my luggage until I reach my destination, but when we fly with a layover to change planes everything is different. We have missed flights in Charlotte going home because when you land you have to do Immigration, wait to claim your luggage, wait to go through customs, then recheck that luggage for the next flight, then go through TSA Security to get on the the gate for the connecting flight. So... either nonstop or carry on only is our current method.

Re: Check In vs Carry On....?
we do the same thing Greg....we have never been to Jamaica without a suitcase full of stuff for the kids....even our first trip, we brought for the kids...we bring a few items for the adults, but mostly children stuff...we also would feel a little guilty without giving a little back...we also bring dog and cat food....I dont but as many beers for the locals like some of my friend do...we carry a 50lb bag of stuff to give away...to the kids...

Good for you Groove16! Glad to see others giving back to the country we love so much . One Love!

Re: Check In vs Carry On....?
I'm carryon all the way, especially since I use a backpack for my extras that I slide under the seat in from of me on the flight down. I brought my daughters in Dec and just the hair products alone guarantees that they have to use check-in (even though they were smart and only had one large check-in bag that they shared). The 'quart ziplock bag for liquids' is a killer for women, though, trying to do carryon for a week!

Re: Check In vs Carry On....?
I just heard a news story stating that at least one airline, Spirit, will begin charging for bags checked at the gate. I would not be surprised if other airlines follow suit. Personally, I wish the airlines would just stop with all the fees that nickel and dime you to death and just charged one rate for everything.

We usually fly on Spirit from Ft. Lauderdale. Most of the time we pack 1 bag that fits under the seat thus no charge. Even in that 1 bag I usually pack too much clothing. If I check a bag (cheaper than carry on), we usually bring things to leave. We pack shoes and clothes for local children. This trip next week I plan on packing lots of books. A must have for me is my music! I bring my laptop which has enough music to DJ a party.
