I read elsewhere that there was some sort of incident that happened today near Cosmos on the beach. Does anyone have any information about this?
It was reported on another site that two tourists were robbed at knifepoint of about $80 US, no one was hurt.
Must be true if one read it elsewhere and the other corroborated it on another site. I am sure Rob or Lisa will get closer to the truth when they find out.
We have not heard anything first hand from anyone involved or from the police, so there is nothing to confirm or deny.
It was posted on the Negril Boardies Facebook page
Thanks Rob......If you could please keep us informed of any updates, I would appreciate it.
Ah, the group page that forced me to join FB. That page used the name of our members, "Negril Boardies" and was started and is maintained by a gentleman in the States. He is not in Negril and would have no way to corroborate any information posted there. To his credit, he has in the description of the page written "For lovers of Negril, and those who communicate on the Negril.com board. Also be sure to check out Negril Boardies- since 1996." But we are in no way affiliated with that group page.
I started the "Negril Boardies- since 1996" page as the official group page for the Negril Message Board. I just read the post in question and it is an "I heard that so and so...." type story. That makes that post second hand at best. The OP's post here is now at least third hand.
As I stated above, without hearing from those involved (first hand) or the police, there is no way to know if this incident occurred or not. If this had been posted on our Negril Boardies - since 1996 group page, I would have had it removed as it is second hand information, and unfortunately not everyone tells the truth while on vacation or on Facebook.... (grin)
No problem Pam! And thanks for asking instead of posting that "it happened".
Anyone can post anything on the Internet for any reason they want. An "I heard" post is easy for us to remove when the info cannot be verified, but first hand posts are not always what they seem. Last week's Rick's Café post is just the latest example of that. When verified, the posted information did not match the info from multiple sources here on the island. And you can read the rest for yourself.
Thanks for the updates and thanks for the info on the fb page... I didn't realize there was one :)
Hate to hear that, glad no one was hurt but it doesn't make your vacation very enjoyable to be robbed of your hard earned cash. maybe we will hear that the police make an arrest.
I know the peeps this happened to.They stay at Point Village and he is a big dude.Glad no one was injured and they have made plans to return next winter.Stay safe and be careful of your surroundings.
Thanks Biggs...if anything good comes out of this...it's always a good reminder for anywhere/anytime...to stay safe and be aware of your surroundings even while on vacation.
Negril is an amazing & unusual village where many locals and tourists interact by the sheer nature of how this community started...originally only rooms and camp sites being offered, small hotels and boutique properties grew and in later years the AI's were developed...there's more movement and interaction around Negril than many other tourist locations.
Some will unfortunately take advantage of the freedom of this fabulous interaction...and hopefully as this one time fishing village quickly becomes a town, the laws and enforcement that come with that process will effectively minimize this situation.
The victim has now posted her story and it's fairly straightforward of right place but wrong time. Her hubby is a big dude but I guess size doesn't matter when the punks who did this were a pack of 4. She didn't mention if they reported this or not but it certainly sounds like it would be close to impossible to catch the punks. They had their hoodies on and took off running after robbing them.
Wishing safe travels to all! I know I'm really looking forward to my trip but my faith has waivered a few times. I hope that my experiences leave me with the same euphoric feeling I got the first time I came to Jamaica! Soon come
Thanks! Is there somewhere I could find the whole story?
jamerican, the post is over on (page name removed due to past libel issues with Jamaican businesses and that page) facebook. It is told by the actually folks this happened to. It was 12:30 in the afternoon, and they were walking on the narrow strip of beach , past Cosmos.
As they report, 4 tall men, with hoodies and sunglasses came out from the brush area, one with a knife demanded their money. The people, who are regular visitors to Negril, gave them approx. 80.00. and they fled, thankfully they were not hurt. I have always been leary of walking in that area.
We owned a timeshare at Beaches Sandy Bay (formerly Poinciana). My morning walk for many years was up to Cosmos. Along the former beach resort that was no longer there (cant remember the name). Past the villa. Along the public beach. Then to Cosmos. On my return walk I was robbed at knife point (had to have stiches) on a deserted part of the beach not really all that far from Beaches Sandy Bay. This was in 2011...we return each year but our habits have changed. Negril is not what it was 20 years ago.
That section where you have to walk in the woods has always been sketchy
Thanks Jojo!
Safe travels to all...
Papa Georgie,
Sorry to read about your stabbing incident (cut) back in 2011. And yes many changes in 20 years but that is universal so.. Safe travels to you too!!
papa George , are you speaking of the small wooded area as you are walking from main part of the beach and right past the wooded area is the house that i think is owned by the Issa family with the swimming pool?
This was the stretch of beach that used to be the mahogany Inn (some years ago). It is now being developed by a Mexican corp. The mahogany Inn had a take out place called "Arawak Fast Food"...too much eh?
