Prayers for my father - update
It is with great sadness, my father passed away this morning. I can't believe that I just wrote that, I am still in shock. He was 88 years old. I was not able to get to the care home this morning in time which is very upsetting. He was highly intelligent, graduated from UC Berkeley with honors. The most gentle, kind, generous person you would ever meet. I never saw him get mad. He was also of Russian heritage and fluent in the language, he loved to sing russian songs and crack corny jokes.
Alzheimer's dementia is inhumane and horrible, I am very sad and angry. I pray that one day they can find a cure and no one else has to go through this.
Thank you so much for the thoughts and prayers.

NegrilIrene,
My sincerest thoughts and condolences to you and your family. Alzheimer/dementia is a truly awful disease which we have experienced in our family too.
Something that is often forgotten or overlooked is the health and well being of the caregivers and families. Please be sure to keep this in mind and take care of you too!
My prayers for you are that you have the strength to lay your father to rest and that you take good care of yourself. Remember that your father is no longer suffering. You are suffering from his passing, but let yourself enjoy the great memories that you have so you can find peace. It is normal to be sad, but it is also normal and acceptable to feel relief and find happiness in the good memories.
Peace to you!

I am so sorry to hear this and my thoughts are with you. When my Mum died I, too, was not able to be there. A wise nurse told me that the ill person does not want to cause too much distress and so waits until they are alone to pass peacefully.
Re: Prayers for my father - update
SLP, thank you for adding that! I meant to and let it slip away.
NegrilIrene, I hope you can laugh at the following sentences.
We had a similar situation with a grandmother. We had all been there for hours and hours. My husband leaned over and whispered for her to go to the light. His cousin Bob was wearing a bright yellow sweater and standing with him. She opened her eyes and said "Bob is in my light". Everyone stood there for a few seconds, not quite sure what to say, and my husband, with his strange sense of humor, gave a little shove to Bob and said "Get the heck out of Grandma's light"! That is when a very kind nurse advised us that Grandma would not pass with us there. One hour after leaving, Grandma peacefully went into the light without anyone in her way. As a family, we found some humor in that situation and still ask Bob where his yellow sweater is.
