Is there anyway to get an antibiotic perscrition while down in Negril?
I just got a text half hour ago from my daughter asking about how to get a prescription for an antibiotic while she's down there now with my grandson (I assume it's for him). I'll be coming down tomorrow, leaving tonight to connect in Charlotte and fly down tomorrow morning from there. I haven't been able to get ahold of her since she sent me the text a lil while ago and I'll be flying out in a few hours. So if I can't pick anything up for her before I leave, how would she be able to to get a prescription (if at all) while down there? I did text her the phone number from a previous post here about a concierge nursing service in Negril. Any other ideas or numbers she should know of? Thanx!

My wife was able to get a zithromax z-pack from White Pharmacy in Negril with no prescription at all last year.

Negril Pharmacy is in the same plaza as the Value Master Supermarket (above the store). Ask for Bruce and let him know the symptoms or problem...

If you want, pass my number along to her, 876-423-5479...
We can get this resolved...

Re: Is there anyway to get an antibiotic perscrition while down in Negril?
So,happy this worked out. Kudos to everyone!
So afraid of needing an antibiotic while there and having to pay excessive amounts of money to see the resort doctor just to be told I have a sinus or ear infection when I know what it is already. So this pharmacy will help?

Now that's quick teamwork. Very cool

Re: Is there anyway to get an antibiotic perscrition while down in Negril?
Our Dr. gives us scripts to fill before we leave home. Some years we need the scripts some not. Just a thought.

Re: Is there anyway to get an antibiotic perscrition while down in Negril?
We bring antibiotics on every reach. She also likes to bring something in case of "wet bathing suit syndrome". ;) It doesn't hurt that the wife is a nurse practitioner.

Oh dear...Bruce is not a physician and cannot diagnose with giving him symptoms! Full assessment of allergies, other medicines or over the counter and individual conditions must be looked at! Proper channel is to see the Doctor. This advise can put someone in trouble quickly.....part of my services is guiding you this process. I can many time come and consult a physician LIVE to call in a script, for his small fee OR refer you where to go if you choose to travel out. Asking a pharmacist for a perscription ONLY, over the counter is a chance I wouldn't take! Nurse Beth

Beth,
If you read the thread in full, I was adding additional information to the previous post. I then posted my number in case the OP wanted to call back in February.
The OP got their issue resolved without further help. No call necessary.
I know Bruce is not a doctor since he is the pharmacist at Negril Pharmacy. He is not always there which is why I suggested asking for him directly if you go to the Negril Pharmacy.
Going to a doctor should always be a first choice option. Your service is a great option as well and I know that you have been busy and wished you would have been able to respond to the OP back in February.
Having been to my share of doctors and pharmacies over the last 57 years, I know that doctors know what to prescribe. And I know that pharmacists know more about drugs and interactions and have a direct working knowledge of the drug success rate.
Even with a prescription, I always talk directly to the pharmacist about problems and symptoms as well as possible drug interactions.

Oh, what also helped (and I didn't mention earlier) is that my daughter is a NYS Board Certified Registered Nurse (with 7 years experience) currently working in Labor and Delivery at one of our local hospitals. So she was educated in what meds she needed. But thank you, again, for your concern.

Re: Is there anyway to get an antibiotic perscrition while down in Negril?
I am seeing my response has been deleted? I will say again I do not think relying on a pharmacist to diagnose and prescribe what HE thinks is best AND sell prescription only medicine to anyone walking in, is legal or a good idea. I cannot imagine getting involved in this. If any reaction or death happens it will be the person who refers as well as pharmacist liability. Why say only take red plate taxis.... when you can say go to pharmacist who will work like he has physician license and prescribe??? Both illegal. Please leave my advise up.
www.j.mp/comfortsJA to have a physician assist after hours or referral to physician.

Re: Is there anyway to get an antibiotic perscrition while down in Negril?
Beth,
Your response has not been altered or removed and it has actally been quoted twice in two separate replies.
No one has suggested to not see a doctor.
Please read the whole thread and especially the original post. Had the OP brought a non filled prescription with him, he would have needed it filled. A pharmacist would be the one to ask to fill it.
And although I hadn't mentioned it yet, should that particular drug not be available in Jamaica, the pharmacist would be able to suggest the local equivalent. Pharmacists, especially in Jamaica, do much more than just put the correct number of pills in a bottle.

Re: Is there anyway to get an antibiotic perscrition while down in Negril?
Antibiotics should be prescribed only when there is an actual need. Too many people demand antibiotics for things like colds and viruses which is useless, and its a serious problem. I'm not going to get into it here - Google if you're curious - but the unnecessary use of antibiotics is a serious issue and leads to them becoming ineffective. A pharmacist should never be doing this... And if they're selling drugs that require a prescription without an actual prescription, that's most certainly illegal.
-
Re: Is there anyway to get an antibiotic perscrition while down in Negril?
Harry,
The mother mentioned is a RN so she would be acutely aware of the problem. Jamaicans, for the most part, do not have the "pill popping" mentality that has been ingrained in the North American psyche.

Re: Is there anyway to get an antibiotic perscrition while down in Negril?
My comment keeps getting deleted. I wouldn't trust a pharmacist to diagnose and prescribe. He is not legally licensed to do so and not able to assess someone. He or anyone referring him to give antibiotics without Dr order will be responsible if any reaction, interaction or worse happens! I can assess, video consult or refer you so you can get prescription through the correct pathway. Best be safe while you are here! Keep my number handy for future needs!www.j.mp/comfortsJA

You cannot bring script from another country into pharmacy here and get it filled. If he sees some script and gives you that or something else, that is NOT in his scope of practice. Thanks.

Absolutely correct! This is NOT the place to be going UNDER the counter....anyone encouraging this can be liable. Unsafe and illegal. It is my job to educate, assist and make sure people get the help they need in an ethical process. They should not handle a script from Dr in ANY country even Jamaica, to suggest another medicine, or fill it without being seen by Dr here. That is incorrect information. If you think Jamaican pharmacists can do more here in Jamaica, you are misinformed, they can/will loose their license. UNSAFE.

Great. I am happy it worked out this time. Then she knows going to pharmacist without script from Dr here and getting something over the counter is illegal. Hate to see something happen down here, when trusting someone who is working outside of his scope of practice. Suggesting people to do this is unethical and unsafe...could be liable if interaction or mistake was made! Take Care!

Re: Is there anyway to get an antibiotic perscrition while down in Negril?
Beth,
Nothing at all of yours is being removed or altered. I don't understand why you think that they are being removed. It is not the case.
As for an out of country prescription, I should have been more clear. The first, least expensive option (in fact it is free) is to take the script to a pharmacy. The pharmacist on duty would be able to let you know if that particular prescription is available or a local equivalent. There are certain drugs that are not available here at all, and other drugs do not require a prescription here. They are over the counter.
If the pharmacy can fill the prescription, they will tell you to take it to one of the certified Jamaican doctors so that a new script can be written and they can fill it.
Going to a doctor first is the more expensive option of the two, especially if the drug is simply not available and there are no local equivalent drug. Or if the drug is over the counter in Jamaica.
But please read the full thread. All your posts are still there.

From the Gleaner, "Law, Discretion, And The Pharmacist"
"For years, our pharmacists have served as a valuable and functional link between doctors and patients, so much so that in years gone by, the pharmacy was not only referred to as a drug store but also as 'doctor shop'. Back then, and today, our pharmacists play a pivotal role in accessing, supplying, dispensing and even the manufacturing of our medication. At times our pharmacist may even be at liberty to substitute if need be and to suggest suitable alternatives in the absence or shortage of some drugs."
http://jamaica-gleaner.com/article/h...d-pharmacist-0
There is also the Pharmaceutical Society of Jamaica:
http://pharmasocietyjamaica.com
I do not feel it is correct to diminish the role of any part of the health care system. Doctors have a role to play as do specialists, surgeons, anesthesiologists, medical technicians, nurses as well as the pharmacists.

Right on Rob! I would only add Traditional Healers to your last sentence list.

Assessing to find a listed equivalent/substitute/alternative drug is normal, but not starting a new/different drug not on approved list for them. That is physician scope of practice even here to assess reaction/interaction/condition needs. Obviously dispensing, supplying and even manufacture IF they are licensed to manufacture is in their scope of practice. Asking for prescription meds, even antibiotics over the counter by pharmacist is illegal, again a Dr should make decision on drug. Prescriptions come from our Drs here and do not accept other country scripts to fill.
** There is no diminishing here, just scope of practice discussion. If we are going to discuss right and wrong posts, you wouldn't need to clarify yours honestly. I know what you were referring to and it my ethical duty to say something, then what people do is their business. Four years in this business assessing and providing care and/OR referring to appropriate Dr/facility if needed without the headaches has allowed me to see some things here.
Feel free to ask questions also at my website www.j.mp/comfortsJA The only concierge service I provide related to prescriptions is when I do a service call to you, I can call all offices to see what offices are open, IF the DR is in or what time they are coming arriving in for the day, so you can plan your day without sitting in clinic all day.... OR... NEW this year, I do telemedicine with physician live so you can get prescription called in and we make sure it is delivered to you without leaving at all. Dozens of visitors are loving this, there is a small fee to physician for this. (Less than office call)
PreRegistered clients (small reduced fee on my website) can get consult and referral to DR over the phone along with 24/7 phone triage assess to me during your stay, which may save you money in the end.
