Greetings Boardies, a church group of 5 newbies is joining me in Negril later this month to distribute food at a church near Sav. As newcomers to Jamaica, what are some suggestions for a day trip? We have a van driver, so that part is covered. I know about the popular sites (Dunn's, Rick's), but I'm out of ideas and need your help!
YS Falls\Black River is a great day trip for newbies. If it is a younger crew they might like Mayfiled Falls better. If possible let them get a good look at the Sav market on a busy morning so they see where the food comes from.

A trip to Abeokuta Nature Park is nice, or one of the amazing waterfalls surrounding Sav (Mayfield Falls or YS Falls). I imagine that you will definitely want to check out the beach in Negril, as well as the west end cliff area. Half Moon Beach in Green Island is a nice day trip too.
You might want to check out Zimbali in little london a neat foodie farm to table experience waaay off the beaten track for a meal

If you head to YS falls I would consider doing the Black River Safari too.

you could also combine Appleton distillery tour with the YS falls trip.
Only a guess but I would think a good Baptist would not be headed to Appleton.

What climate will the newbies be coming from?
Plan your day to be relaxing in the Jamaica climate. Too long a day is very uncomfortable for someone not used to the tropics.

The captain is wise! An alternate agenda would be the Rockland bird sanctuary out side Montego Bay late morning. Explore historic Falmouth or one of the nature attractions in the area. Dinner and boat ride at Glistening Waters. But time it so it’s dark for the boat ride. Then return to Negril tired and full of happy memories!
End of July will be scorching hot. I would stay close to the ocean, and book a nice peaceful sunset dinner cruise on a catamaran.
Hi Cap, they are coming from Raleigh NC, so they are somewhat used to the weather, but Jamaican temps, humidity, and sun are totally different. Thanks!

Peace and Guidance
Just to throw my 2 cents in; the roaring river cave trip is quite amazing. The caves are OK, but swimming in the aquifers who's depths are as yet unknown was something I will never forget. Our guide told us Jamaican's feel deep spirituality when they swim in these waters, and so did I. Nice cool place to spend a few hours out of the sun and heat too.

My favorite spot not far from Negril is Half Moon Beach (if you can't tell from my nick) They just re-opened Calico Jacks island bar where they serve great food also. It's relaxing and peaceful and close :)
