Changes are coming to Negril...
There's been a lot of rumour etc over the summer in regards to HiLo closing/moving, the NCB (bank) moving, the ATM which is already closed that was located next to HiLo....and here's the reason why in the link below....

Re: Changes are coming to Negril...
WOW. big changes. OK so is there still an F/X trader there somewhere? I have used them for years and the staff is great.

Re: Changes are coming to Negril...
FX Trader was there today ..
-
Re: Changes are coming to Negril...
Where is the shopping center going to be?
Need reference point
-
Re: Changes are coming to Negril...
It is the complex being renovated across from Tree House/Country Country. It was open only for a short time many years ago ..
-
Re: Changes are coming to Negril...
Thanks Rob
Article said January 2019 so I guess we can expect it to be open on about 1 year

Re: Changes are coming to Negril...
The article mentions the complex will be on land side across from Boardwalk Village. What is being built across the street from Tree House? Did I miss something?
-
Re: Changes are coming to Negril...
mi real estate background and local knowledge tells mi that location is too far for most of the local population.......
mi personally and many local people mi know have never been down to the Boardwalk....it's out of the way
it's a location for tourist and establishments that cater to tourist would be better suited...
a much better location would have been where the hospital is being constructed......
or on the Sav road going out of town by Banmark and the home improvement store etc are......
just mi two cents........
Cool Runnings, Marko

Re: Changes are coming to Negril...
I think the article is Jamaica-speak for across the road from Boardwalk Village. It will indeed be across the road, only a ways south, towards town, approximately across from the Treehouse. The property was a shopping centre years ago (10 years ago?), wasn't open for very long, and has been vacant since, although it has been well maintained over the many years of its closure. I have walked past this property many times from our stays at the Rayon Hotel and often wondered why someone doesn't reopen it. I, for one, can't wait for a more convenient Cambio than the one at Times Square.

Re: Changes are coming to Negril...
Ah Ha! It was called Bayside Village Plaza Shopping Center years ago.

Re: Changes are coming to Negril...
According to the article, one of the reasons for the move away from the downtown area was to reduce congestion.
Seeing it from a real estate perspective...the closures were inevitable as Sunshine Plaza has been sadly deteriorating over the years. Other than slightly inconveniencing the West End people...I find it to be a better location for locals that have to bank from Orange Bay, Green Island and the many newer areas being developed...and coming from the Sav direction...it won't make that much of a difference considering how bad the traffic congestion can get downtown.
Though we've heard the rumour that HiLo is closing and maybe moving...there hasn't been any confirmation as to which grocery chain is going in the new location. Hopefully we'll get a competitor to the HiLo/Value Master brand...as having two stores from the same chain within a couple of blocks of each other was strange...same goods, same prices...no competition!!
This town is certainly growing!

Re: Changes are coming to Negril...
Any idea when the grocery store will open

Re: Changes are coming to Negril...
Isn't January 2019 a little over a month away? Are they opening then? (Not a year

That's my thought, first of the year.

Re: Changes are coming to Negril...
Was being extremely sarcastic
My recollection is nothing opens on schedule in Jamaica :friendly_wink:

Re: Changes are coming to Negril...
Changes? Negril has changed?
Cap

Re: Changes are coming to Negril...
Oh no - that's the only ATM we've ever used! We've never had a problem with it. Which would be the next most secure? I'm sure this has been covered before but we are coming soon... Thanks!

There are secure ATMs at Scotia Bank downtown & in Time Square,
CIBC across the parking lot from Burger King,
Sagicor in the Coral Seas Plaza parking lot,
NCB outside of Value Master,
and another Scotia Bank & NCB ATM near/in the Petcom gas station across from the Royalton.

Re: Changes are coming to Negril...
Thanks! I had no idea there were even this many ATMs in Negril, let alone this many that are considered secure.

Maybe I'm not understanding your version of secure.
All the ATMs I've mentioned are operated by banks and/or financial companies.
-
Re: Changes are coming to Negril...
The ATM by the HiLo worked great for us - it was inside and we've never had an issue with skimmers or fraudulent charges arising from using it.

Re: Changes are coming to Negril...
I have used the Scotia ATM's at Time Square and by the airport every year since they appeared, and I have never had a problem either.

Re: Changes are coming to Negril...
Times Square ATM is new and hopefully more tamper proof. It did appear to be and it worked 3 out of my 4 attempts which is a record for me at any Negril ATM. I think the one time it didn’t work was probably because it was out of money since it was late in the day.

That is the only problem with the one at Time Square...you have to get there before the tour buses show up and the hoard of tourists empty it.

Re: Changes are coming to Negril...
Same issue with the ones at Scotia Bank - don't expect them to have any money left on Sunday.

Re: Changes are coming to Negril...
So, where is the F/X Trader now? Is it still at Sunshine? I will need it in the next week or so.
-
Re: Changes are coming to Negril...
FX Trader is still in the Sunshine Plaza, at the far end by the driveway entrance.
-
Re: Changes are coming to Negril...
Thanks Rob. It was at the corner last time I was there. See you soon.
-
Re: Changes are coming to Negril...
Any updates on this old / new shopping plaza ? Grocery store open, ATM available, etc....
-
Re: Changes are coming to Negril...
NCB says they are moving to the new plaza in February... A few shops open but no major "anchor" businesses yet.
-
Re: Changes are coming to Negril...
Thanks Rob .......... please keep us updated on the NCB Bank and ATM situation.
