Re: Negril Palms-guard dog
Some neighbors of mine in Westmoreland have dogs that chase me and snap at my legs when I ride my bicycle by on my late-afternoon after-work bike rides to Roaring River. I hate them. I like the peaceful cows and goats, but hate the aggressive dogs. Not sure what to do about it. Pepper spray maybe? I biked a lot in the US and did not encounter this.

Pepper Spray is illegal in Jamaica. Besides, harming the animals of your neighbors is a very quick way to make serious enemies.
I highly suggest making friends with the dogs, let them get to know you. Your prior experience in the US plays no part in this as you are not in the US...
Re: Negril Palms-guard dog
Perhaps offering the canines some doggie treats would be a solution?

yes ... give them a snack... they will love you
Re: Negril Palms-guard dog
Dat is good advice - thanks!
Re: Negril Palms-guard dog
A long time ago a friend showed me a trick to repel aggressive security dog(s) at residences, commercial properties, or on the street. When a dog STARTS to get aggressive bend down and pretend to pick up a rock and motion as if you are throwing it at them. For some odd reason they run away, as if they have been hit before. The downside - if the owner THINKS you are harming their dog you may get your ### kicked. Or if this trick doesn't work you will get your ### kicked by the dog.
Please, NEVER actually throw anything at an animal or person.
Re: Negril Palms-guard dog
Likkle jerk chicken.......dog would mine in no time:friendly_wink:
Re: Negril Palms-guard dog
Dog treats and jerk chicken are much better than harming the dogs, as well as probably more likely to succeed!
As a note, when I biked back in high school (40 years ago), our big ride was TOSRV (Tour Of the Scioto River Valley).
Virtually the first thing mentioned to the lesser experienced bikers was to yell a loud and firm NO if a dog ran towards you while riding. You might have to yell something else here... :encouragement:

Maybe "Noooooo MON!"
Re: Negril Palms-guard dog
As I said it was a "heads up" to anyone that may find themselves in this area at night. I find some of the responses somewhat peculiar but hey, to each their own. I have vast experience with pet dogs as well as specialized working dogs. To be quite honest I was trying to be polite and somewhat subtle but maybe I should be far more blunt. This dog is a ticking time bomb. Be careful.
Re: Negril Palms-guard dog
There are also packs of wild dogs in rural Jamaica. I don't know if they are actually dangerous to adult humans, but it is quite scary to find yourself surrounded by a pack of barking wild dogs at night. I found myself in that situation once, a number of years ago. I threw stones at them and they ran away.
Re: Negril Palms-guard dog
Jamaica Jeff...the thread took a bit of a turn to a different situation...
but, I hear you loud & clear!!
I first saw the guards with the pit bulls at Treehouse one late afternoon/early evening & it scared the beegeezuz out of me!!
I dont know WTH they're thinking using these dogs as security...the guards were definitely not in control of the dogs!!
Just to note...this is only the second time I've heard of or seen the dogs...not sure if this is supposed to become a regular measure of security.
Re: Negril Palms-guard dog
Bnewb, I certainly hope that it is an ill-conceived idea and whoever is commissioning the use of this dog or dogs will re-think things.
I would hate to see someone get injured or worse which is highly probable in this situation.
A properly trained "guard" dog is trained to not react in any way, shape or form until the handler gives them a specific command.
Re: Negril Palms-guard dog
Where I stay there are 2 Rottweilers that don't bother people who stay there but will guard the entrance for people who should not be there. Day time is OK but they roam at night and will bark if someone comes on the property. I do not nor have I ever trusted Pit Bulls since one charged at me and my large dog years ago.
Re: Negril Palms-guard dog
Last year, as we were walking past Treehouse, they had an event on the beach, and was fenced off by the lovely blue tarps. There were two security guards walking the perimeter with German Shepard dogs, and they looked mean {the dogs}. WTF? Seriously? What are they scared of? A tourist might try to "sneak" in? This was in the middle of the afternoon. Paranoid much? FYI: Green Leaf cabins has vicious pitbull mixed type of dogs. Beware. If in your lifetime you've ever been bit by a vicious dog {I have} It makes you think twice about them. Good luck with the "doggie treats". Just sayin'.........
Re: Negril Palms-guard dog
Sometimes I've found in Negril that the security guards, rather than offering protection, are the ones you need protection *from*. Or in a few cases, their dogs. Unfortunately...

Re: Negril Palms-guard dog
I am a jogger and have had many encounters with dogs. I always growl, bark, and go right at them. Scares the **** out of them usually. I have only once had one not back off in 30 years.

Sounds like a dangerous approach to a dog especially in Jamaica. I have known some people who have used that same approach with a firearm and more than a few had an experience where that didn't work so well.
It has been my observation concerning the interactions with people and dogs in Jamaica that a lot of Jamaicans run and the dogs will often chase them until they stop and pick up a rock or at least pretend they have a rock and make like they are going to fling it. Some dogs didn't get the memo, I guess, because they often ended up biting them.
Re: Negril Palms-guard dog
Sounds very scary, and sad at the same time.

One of the men who was first on the scene of a dog attack on a sixth-grade teacher has recounted seeing four pitbulls standing over the helpless woman laying on the road surface.
Delroy Foster says one of the dogs was standing to the side while another was “licking the blood” off the St Richards Primary School teacher as she was sprawled out on Woodland Way, in Coopers Hill, St Andrew.
“That time them bite, bite her up long time”, Foster told The Gleaner during an interview today.
Re: Negril Palms-guard dog
The above attack near Kingston is being addressed by the police, the dogs owner is talking with the authorities.

Re: Negril Palms-guard dog
But pit bulls are just cute and cuddly animals, right? From the article Rob posted:
The teacher's ordeal comes just one year after the Observer reported the death of 66-year-old Whittington Cole, who was mauled by a group of pit bulls and Rottweilers.
Whittington's death came just months after a mother and her two young children were attacked by dogs in an upper St Andrew community.
In February 2016 the Observer reported the death of 56-year-old Jerome Pow after he was attacked by pit bulls in the vicinity of Hagley Park Road, St Andrew.
On January 2, 2014, a three-year-old boy lost an eye after being mauled by a pit bull in St Ann; and on January 4, 2014, a 59-year-old mechanic was mauled by three pit bulls in St Mary.
Re: Negril Palms-guard dog
The dogs in the above incident have been removed from the owner by the police and JSPCA...
