Transportation from airport
Hi Guys!
Quick question because again I’m getting conflicting information. Our cousin wamts to pick us up at the Mobay airport and bring us to Negril. I called the hotel and they said it is not mandatory to use their transportation. Other forums are saying different things. Does anyone have a definitive answer? We’re happy to go with the the hotel transportation if it means abiding by the laws. Also I just wanted to say how delightful and helpful you all are. And feel free to message me if you want to meet up for a drink while there! Also if you’re up for babysitting a 4 and 5 year old lol. Just kidding!

If your cousin is a JTB Covid Certified operator, then they would be able to transport you.
It is not mandatory to take the hotel transportation, but it IS mandatory to take a JTB Covid Certified driver everywhere you go.
This is why I told you that to visit your property to look at it from the road you will need JTB Covid Certified transportation.

Re: Transportation from airport
K thanks. He and the hotel are under different impressions or are not informed about the latest requirements apparently. This is why I come here for answers because the locals are giving different information.

The "latest" requirements are months old now, you have always had to use only JTB Covid Certified transportation. The hotels cannot get certified without knowing this information. And they are correct that you are not required to use their drivers. Please note that when you change hotels or go anywhere that you will need to use only JTB Covid Certified transportation.

Re: Transportation from airport
Actually Rob I just received a note from the JTB that contradicts your information. It states that visitors can choose their means of transportation from the airport but are required to use certified transportation within the corridor.I’ll try to screenshot the message

LOL! Nothing I wrote is contradicted, in fact it backs up exactly what I wrote.
It says, "Please note that if you would be staying within the Resilient Corridor (which you are) at an approved resort (which you are) you will be required to use Tourist Board licensed transportation for all movements within the Corridor."
That is EXACTLY what I just wrote to you. No contradiction whatsoever.

Re: Transportation from airport
Umm no I asked if our cousin could drive us from the airport to Negril and you said he he had to be JTB covid certified which is obviously not the case. That is what you wrote.

Your exact words. The fact is you do NOT need a certified driver to bring you from the airport

BethAnn,
The FACT is that you will be required to use a JTB licensed certified driver. Please reread this:
"Please note that if you would be staying within the Resilient Corridor (which you are) at an approved resort (which you are) you will be required to use Tourist Board licensed transportation for all movements within the Corridor."
What do you think this means?
They say that you can choose your own transportation AS LONG AS THEY ARE JTB CERTIFIED. It doesn't mean that you can choose just anyone.
-
Re: Transportation from airport
BethAnn,
Why are you trying so hard to break the Covid guidelines and put yourself, family and general population at risk?
-
Re: Transportation from airport
No it means from the airport you can choose your mode of transportation. Once WITHIN the corridor you use JTB certified transportation. You’re not reading it like that?
-
Re: Transportation from airport
Rob you’re completely wrong. I never said anything about breaking any rules but I’m trying to get accurate information. Perhaps if you were born and bred Jamaican you would be more empathetic.

BethAnn...when you complete your Travel Authorization...you'll have to confirm your driver is JTB licensed & certified....the Montego Bay airport is in the corridor!
-
Re: Transportation from airport
The why does it say from the airport you can choose your own transportation? It says that

That was uncalled for....Rob is giving you the facts & trying to keep our friends as safe as possible...not cool!
-
Re: Transportation from airport
Rob keeps accusing me of trying to break rules which is ridiculous. My family is from there, why would I jeopardize them.

I "chose" my own transportation from the airport...but they had to be JTB licensed & certified.
-
Re: Transportation from airport
Lisa I specifically asked if a family member could pick us up and they didn’t say anything about it being certified
-
Re: Transportation from airport
Rob I’m sorry for what I said. I’m sure I’ll get purged from this group now. I don’t doubt your love and concern for Jamaica as you shouldn’t doubt ours.

Empathetic? How long have you been living here on a daily basis? I am into decades. I care about my friends and their families and want everyone on the island to be both safe and maintain a livelihood.
I am giving you the correct information to make sure that you have the best, safest and most productive trip possible in your short time.
What logical sense would it be to have the government set up all these measures, the Corridor, Covid Certified JTB Transportation, masks, social distancing, curfews, etc. and then allow every visitor to randomly pick any driver they want as their very first contact with the island who has not been trained or certified and may possibly be infected?
Don't you think that it is more likely that you can pick your driver as long as they are JTB Covid certified?

Re: Transportation from airport
We have a regular guy who has a taxi and I asked him this question
"We were wondering if you are approved for airport pick-ups based on the COVID restrictions.
It indicates that all taxis must be certified through JUTA or some such"
His response:
"The approval goes for drivers who have contract with the airport we all follow the safety protocols given by the ministry of health and wellness so we are on the safe side. "
Hope this helps BethAnn with understanding - drivers who have a contract with the airport - are the only ones approved for pick-ups - ( So I presume they must be JTB licensed certified driver)

It says that because you can. If you are staying outside Corridor or at a non Covid certified property, a family member can pick you up but then you will all have to quarantine.

BethAnn,
Thank you for the apology and it would take a whole lot more vulgar bs to be purged. The wording on the letter could have been better and I understand why you are confused. But the "Please note" is the important part of the letter.

Re: Transportation from airport
Rob you were questioning if I wanted to endanger my family and I got defensive. Like I said I know you are deeply entrenched in Jamaica. Yes we are in the US now but my husband and children were born and raised there and I lived there for many years before we were able to obtain permanent residency in the US. So yes we do have a vested interest there.

Yes, all airport contract drivers are JTB licensed certified.

Hey Irie Always....just a heads up...
ask your driver what company name he is legally Covid certified under... you'll need this information when you fill out your Travel Authorization form confirming your JTB certified transportation ride.
The link below shows ALL the JTB certified drivers...
https://www.visitjamaica.com/travela...tion/#Approved
Scroll down & click on
TRANSPORTATION / TOUR OPERATORS and find your driver's name or company name.

BethAnn,
It wasn't so much questioning but trying to prevent your family from endangering themselves or anyone on the island. I care about your family on the island too.
The actual rules are extremely common sense ways to prevent the spread of Covid while allowing people to earn a living.

Re: Transportation from airport
Rob,
A couple of us from the OLB are making a quick trip in Feb. No container, just a couple suitcases. I’m curious about a couple things. Are certified vehicles clearly marked as such?
How is this enforced?
Is Sheffield within the corridor?
Thanks, hope to see you and Lisa soon!
-
Re: Transportation from airport
Ras Walleye,
There are lists of certified transportation offerings as well as a map showing the corridor at visitjamaica.com
At this moment in time, you have to enter your choice of transportation and your hotel as you apply for your travel authorization. No one can predict what may be happening when you travel in February.
-
Re: Transportation from airport
Beth Ann,
your response from the JTB is clear. The airport is in the corridor as well as the route to Negril. You will be in the corridor and you will be required to use certified transportation. At this moment in time, you have to enter your transportation and your hotel for your travel authorization. It would be unfortunate if you could somehow be allowed to arrive and then have to make last minute decisions or arrange different transportation. Please just follow the rules.
You have a beautiful family, please do not jeopardize them or your family in Jamaica by not following the protocols.
Walk good Beth Ann
I just re read your screen shot....it specifically says "you will be required to use Tourist Board licensed transportation for ALL MOVEMENTS WITHIN THE CORRIDOR"
-
Re: Transportation from airport
Hi Jeanne! Thank you for your response. Obviously I’m struggling with this whole thing but now that I understand better I will definitely follow the rules. I’m going to book the hotel transportation from and returning to the airport and we will utilize them for all transportation within the corridor.
-
Re: Transportation from airport
Great idea!! Have a wonderful trip!

Ras,
There are no "certified" markings but all JUTA, JCal and Maxi drivers are certified. Do not take public transportation (route taxis) as they are all NOT certified.
It is enforced mainly at roadblocks and speed traps, but we have seen the occasional vehicle get pulled over.
Sheffield is in the Corridor, but you can't visit private homes, only businesses in the area.
See you soon!
