Would like to go to Half Moon or Rhodes Hall while on vacay in a few weeks. What's the current rate for route taxi to Green Island? Just want an idea of what to offer for a ride to Half Moon...
From the beach I believe its 140JMD per person
Thanks Rastagirl...how much would you pay for a ride to Half Moon? What do you think would be reasonable?
$300J...paid that a couple weeks ago...driver seemed happy.
If you are flagging a route taxi you pay 140JMD per person, nothing more.
I pay my driver 500JMD from my place on the west end to Half Moon. Its about 1/2 hour ride from my yard.
Braz...eye how'd ya like half moon beach ? the wifey is looking forward to a day or two at the beach sans bathing costume !!!
hang brain !!! lmfao ..thats a new one for me..
I only stopped in...wanted to talk about mi next reach. It was quiet; nice!
I know I "overpaid," but $140 J vs. $300J is $2 U.S additional to the fare. Rastagirl, as you know the folks (like me) getting off the plane don't ALWAYS get quoted the Jamaican price...I assumed it was a $150J ride, at least...I'll live and the driver gets to eat lunch. Win Win.
Hangbrain would make a great Negril.com screen name...
Hey Rob,
How can I change my screen name to Hangbrain? Great idea Brasi. lol!
Braz-you didn't overpay - you chartered the taxi. When flagging a route taxi, especially on the beach road you need to make it clear you want a "local" fare, meaning he should stop and pick up other passengers as you go. You don't negotiate price - you hand him the local fare of 140JMD. I've learned not to tell them where I'm going - when I get there I say "one stop driver" and that's it. I would imagine on the beach road its a bit tougher as a visitor to try to wrangle a local fare from a route taxi but it can be done.
I've learned to always negotiate the fare BEFORE I step in the route taxi. I've had a few bad experiences with drivers even when other people have been picked up along the way. Had one driver that was down right angry when we got out and I paid him the route taxi fare!!
So if 4 people are going, technically that would be the same as "chartering" a taxi cause it's full, right? So would $600 be a fair offer?
So...as I understand it Green Island fare is the same as one leg in Negril? (ie. beach road, Westend) Thought fare to Green Island would be about 2 legs cause of the greater distance?
the local fare in Negril is still only $100J isn't it?
seeing the $140 mentioned here has me wodering about our reach next weekend
Its 100JMD until you get to RIU I believe (could be wrong) - then its 140JMD to Green Island. You need to look for a route taxi that says "Negril-Green Island".
As far as arguing with route taxi drivers, when I get in cab where I don't know the driver/he doesn't know me I always say "Local fare?" - and I've never had an argument, a teeth kiss, nothing. I seldom take route taxis on the beach road but I take them quite a bit on West End Road and the drivers tend to know who I am or at least that I'm "local".
600JMD r/t or one way? R/T sounds fare from the beach - one way, I think that's a bit much.
Thanks Rastagirl!
OH: also this past reach, I got swindled out of a 500J. I "negotiated" my price from West End to Alfred's...$300J...thought it was fair...handed the guy $1000J. He handed me back a wad.
It was 200J. One 100, two 50s. I didn't count it right away...hence part of why "Brasi was Lost in Negril." LOL
Word to the wise. COUNT YOUR CHANGE.
Again, not the end of the world...but I bet I (foolishly or carelessly) gave away/got ripped off for at least $100 US during my 12 days...that's a nice dinner, a cab, lunch, and drinks for a day, at LEAST.
Small bills are nice to have. If I have a 1000 I make sure the driver has change.
Wow, yeah you are right Dana - its 600JMD. I'm a math idiot :(
And no, the route taxi fare West End-Beach and anywhere on Beach road remains 100JMD.
good to know...thanks Rastagirl :)
Braz-eye ..lol .. who hasnt been ripped off by a taxi driver ..everywhere in the world ..gotta be the largest worldwide syndicate ever created ..
negril has a way of making your pockets lighter ..with a smile ..and a ya mon ..10 US a day is pretty darn good ..still 120.00 USF ..oh well
I once pondered the idea of a tram up and down the beach/cliffs ..sort of a hop on hop off affair ... the feedback (mostly from "locals") was
fervently opposed ..all the time I've spent in negril ..and must admit ..still struggle with whole taxi scene .. it always seems to be hit and miss for me ..
re-reading this post reiterates my point .. Braz-eye from the cliffs paid 300 ja .. in the "real" world ..he should have paid 100ja to roundabout ..100ja to RIU and 140ja to half moon beach = 340ja with my math .. Rastagirl says she pays 500ja from cliffs and has it all figured out ???
4 folks from the cliffs to half moon beach = 1360ja each way or about 4 US ea
4 folks from the beach to half moon beach = 960ja each way or about 2.50 US ea
4 folks from RIU to half moon beach = 560ja each way or about 1.50 US ea
No ???
Miss G and I went to Lucea in May of 2011 from Seastar.
Total cost 1,500 J.
Got route cab who was coming down Seastar lane. I paid the Lucea guy an extra 200 to take me to my lawyer's door. Had to walk down the hill to cab stand in Lucea but paid extra to have the cliffs guy drop us at Seastar gate. Tipped each driver a bit more
1,500 J = 17.25 US Pretty cheap I'd say
Negriljail - I have it figured out better than you.
Brazi said he paid 300 from the beach. Not from the cliffs from what I understood. Good price.
A route taxi from the CIRCLE or anywhere on the BEACH ROAD to GREEN ISLAND is 140JMD
I pay 500JMD from my yard DEEP WEST. Fair price, great driver.
4 folks from the cliffs via route taxi - 100JMD to the circle, 140JMD to HMB = 240JMD per person = 960JMD
4 folks from anywhere on the beach, RIU possibly included to HMB, 140JMD x4 = 560JMD
So yeah - I do have it figured out. Been here long enough - I should or shame on me.
I paid 300J from the roundabout...it was a route taxi, with one other passenger getting out around Times Square.
Okay rastagirl ..no problem ..i'm just a tad confused is all .. you had a math aha moment also
140ja from roundabout to half moon beach is an incredible bargain !! especially considering it's 100ja from roundabout to Ricks !!
peace
I agree...that is crazy cheap!! Just wanted an idea of a starting rate to bargain with...seems everybody wants to barter LOL. I like to know what the going rate is. I usually always pay more than the regular route taxi fare anyways but don't like being taken advantage of just because I am a tourist.
Si Mademoiselle ..but see ..Braz-eye report re. 100USF short after a short stay ..
Brassssi is an idiot. If he does something...do the other. LOL
I mean...I buy beers for some Jamaican dude that asked and asked and asked... I just got sick of him qsking... LOL...and finally some ex-pat (maybe) guy called Pirate at Seastar told me wassupp...
Say "I don't buy beers for guys, unless you have a poom poom..." {sic}
No beers bought for Jamaican males rest of vaca. Solved. But I was already 80 US in probably.
Just another tip from your chubby neighborhood Brasi.
I dont travel in taxis often in Negril but the part of the island where I stay the route taxis don't move off until they have 5 passengers loaded then they drop off and pick up on their route One passenger in the front and 4 in the back. If I am going to charter I usualy offer the route fare x 5.
eg. 140JMD x 5.= 700JMD.
I think thats a fare fair.
I tip if it was a good drive and take the number for future use
good to get to know reliable safe taxi drivers .
B
Negriljail - truthfully, math gives me a headache.
Brasi - you gave the guy a nice tip. Leave it at that, live and learn for next time.
Considering the size of a route taxi...and legally it is only supposed to have 3 passengers in the rear...a full taxi would be 4 people plus the driver. So why are you paying for 5 fares??
Because some taxis carry 5 passengers whether it is legal or not. Heck I've seen 6.
One time 6 passenger and the driver all the way from Spanish Town to Ochie. In not a very large car. ( Ouch)
Thank God I was a lot slimmer then
I usualy get dropped of just a little bit of the main road that the route the taxi drives
Mostly it's because I have a heavy load to carry and I am travelling with a few others.
Sometimes I even pay 2x times the route price to take up an extra seat and save time waiting for the taxi driver to get another passenger and to have a more comfortable ride.
This is especially fun to do in the front seat of a minibus if you are travelling a long distance. You can sit comfortably and have your bag/belongings on the chair beside you.
Where I stay they drive with 5 passngers. A lot of slim people in the area.
If I am taking up the taxi for my sole purpose I think it's fair to compensate the driver for that.
I preferr to offer the price rather than to barter. If they are not happy with the fare I check the next taxi.

I have a driver friend who showed me a pad he keeps for when he has to have someone sit where the gear shift is, the center console in the car front seat, you know? He had a great story about a larger woman riding there one time...
Pleae tell. lol
You know the ettiquete if you share a route taxi.
No matter how many men are allready in that taxi when you hail it one will always jump out and make you squeeze in and then somehow squeeze almost on top of you. If I suggest i would prefer to sit at the door the man will insist he doesn't want to sit next to the next man. Lol
It's definitely a story that requires that you see him tell it in person, with all his hand gestures and descriptions of the woman and her place in the car, what she said, what he said, etc ;)
If you ever find yourself on the route between Duncans and Clarkstown....
