Ok, gotta question.. May seem silly, BUT Do you still tan with a high SPF suntan lotion? Higher being SPF 30+.. Last reach I used Austrailan Gold with 15 SPF and I applied frequently, however still burned on the back of my shoulder blades and on the balls of my cheeks..What do you use to still get an awesome golden tan WITHOUT the burn? Oh, and staying out of the sun is NOT an option!:cool:
Maui Babe - 30 SPF - waterproof, applied head to toe, tops of ears & feet, and scalp too - before putting on the bathing suit, (so there's no missed 'edges'), when the skin is still cool & dry, and let it soak in and dry completely before going out. that method goes for any sunscreen really, since it takes about 20 minutes to become effective, so it doesn't work so well when you apply it to hot skin while you are actually out IN the sun - it will just slide off. I've used this one for a couple years now, and get a great tan, with no burn, even when I spent a month in Trinidad/Tobago, which is hotter than JA (closer to the equator)
using only the sunscreen i get a great golden color, and they also have another lotion called 'browning lotion' that is applied over the sunscreen if desired.... gives an even deeper brown color. but in any case when i apply the 30 SPF before going out in the sun, and let it dry really well into the skin, it lasts for hours and i don't burn. Although just as an extra precaution I carry a small travel size with me to the beach, and re-apply on the nose, decollete, and shoulders throughout the day, usually after i get out of the water so the skin is cool; i go under a tree or to some shady spot, and sit there for a good 20 minutes while it soaks in and dries on the skin, before going back out into the sun.
eta: Maui Babe also has an 'after sun lotion', which has aloe vera and kukui nut oil; it's very rich and helps soothe & cool the skin, and really holds the tan for weeks after getting home from vacation - it settles the skin down each night so it's all ready for the next day's sunning, and never peels. their products are not cheap, but they have super high-quality natural ingredients. and at this point in life i'll spend more for high quality skin care.
30 SPF for sure, I use banana boat sports --doesn't sweat off or come off in water. I bring the spray since I travel solo--it makes it easier to get my back covered. It is not my favorite kind though--it goes on dry which is good for clothes etc--but it can leave a sorta powdery white residue (not nice!) But the coverage and staying power is really good. I use a different lotion (still SPF 30) for my face--and reapply often. I always get quite tan and no burns.
I wear only #30, apply it often, and still always get a really dark tan.
I use Hawaiian Tropic Sheer Touch SPF 30 or 50, depending how long I'll be in Negril. Of late that's been the SPF 50 and I still manage to get a tan going my first day. I make sure to reapply after being in the water or taking a really long walk, but still manage to get plenty dark without burn.:cool:

I think having alcohol in your blood somehow mixes w/the sun and they both become stronger! Also there should be sunscreen application for dummies. I've watched some tourists fail so miserably and you can practically watch them sizzle. Then you see them later in the week and they look like a lobster.
a couple of days before a gal we knew was to get married, the entire wedding party went a on day cruise......it was painful to see them all dressed up
in "scratchy"-"starchy" formal wear, and doing the "arms out to the side" and "stiff as a robot walk" down the isle.........ouch........

i LIVE in the sand/sun .... Banana Boat Ultra Defense 15 works 4 me. water resistant yet moisturizes (aloe vera) and actually absorbs into skin/not sticky. can even use on face. is in a purple, green and white tube and coming in other SPF and is UVA

You can get the maui babe at drugstore.com right now. There is also a coupon code for an additional 20%off skincare items (SKIN20) and free shipping over $25. Making the lotion pretty reasonable and in line with other sunblocks.
I use 30 as well but after a couple of weeks I drop it to 15 (I stay a month) depending on the sun's intensity. I use L'Oreal (sp?) 30 for the face - a separate one from the body. It has moisturizers and is dry to the touch in about 15 minutes. And YES I get a great tan. I'm one of those people who stay mostly in the shade too unless I'm in the water of course.

ULTA carries it, but they don't always have all three of the products in-stock at any given moment.... i think some beauty supply shops and some tanning places might also - but not places like RiteAid, CVS, or Walgreens

Cetaphil 50spf on my face,ears and scalp...a moisturizer with spf50 works great and I tan. The rest of the body gets spf30, usually BullFrog Ultra Waterproof Defense....pricey but worth it. Love BullFrog. After the base tan sets in....5 to 7 days...its on to Hawaii'nTropic Spf15 or even 5 tanning oils......

The Maui Babe Browning Lotion is all natural and has no chemical ingredients, the SPF lotion on the other hand has a few ingredients I wouldn't use. Please, read the labels and be so careful what you put on your skin...remember your skin absorbs everything, so what goes on your skin goes into your body, and in some cases into your bloodstream (depending on the chemical). Here is a good arcticle about the toxic chemicals in sunscreens...a lot of people just don't know and will buy whatever is on the shelf thinking "they sell it so it must be safe". If more people are a aware then they can make better decisions....There are alternative products out there. :cool:

I have a whole routine with sunscreen products. I am fair so I burn easily and I am very aware of this when in Jamaica. I start my trip using 50SPF on my my body, 70SPF on my face. The middle of my trip I come down to 30SPF on my body and 50SPF on my face. Towards the end of my trip I go down to 15SPF, sticking with 50 on my face.
I try to stay out of the sun between Noon and 2:00pm.
Aside from sunburn skin cancer should be a real concern.
I get a killer and long standing tan. I never burn and have very minimal sun damage to my skin (and I've been a beach bunny my entire life)
I'm still tan and I've been back since February.

thanks mishell and rastagal for the informative links. Turns out the sunscreen spray I bought is full of chemicals that could cause harm. I am returning it and luckily have some great stuff from Mario Badescu that I will take instead. I will have to reapply it a lot more often, but it is worth it.
yah, most sunscreens do have some of those chemicals in them, and i know the Maui Babe SPF lotion is among them; but it contains only one of the 'bad' class of chemicals listed in the link above. IMHO it's still better than chancing a severe burn which could also be very damaging - a bad burn by itself also increases cancer risk. If i use a product with better ingredients, but the tradeoff is that it requires constant re-application, I won't be nearly as well-protected as I am with one I apply once in the morning and done.
I don't know what the statistics are about which thing is the greater risk (sunscreen chemicals vs. a severe burn) -- but since I don't use it on my skin every day, i'll take the calculated risk of occasional use of sunscreen, over the greater & more immediate risk of severely burning my skin. Even though i too don't lay out during the hottest hours from 12-2 pm, i will still burn badly. and i'm NOT gonna stay indoors all the time and miss out on the beach!
Why not have zero risk and get a sunscreen with no harmful chemicals? I don't have to reapply my chemical free sunscreen any more than a toxic full Banana Boat or Copppertone. I agree though one harmful ingredient is better than several...and most sunscreens contain several..including fragrance YUCK!Quote:

yup, I remember in AIT we had two that got article 15's when they came back from Padre Island too sunburned to report for duty. Never happened to me, had plenty of experiences as a teen going to the beach coming back too many time red as a lobster. Nowadays I use 45 and apply it frequently to keep my chance of getting skin cancer down.Quote:

no problem Jim & Donna - anyone can use it; it has a fragrance but it's not real "perfumey". And the browning lotion smells like coffee -- cause that's what's IN it! on the website some ppl posted that they don't like that but i LOVE it, hehehe

Badger is a good one, also JASON line and Burts Bees has some out as well. Here is a link to Badger on Amazon, once on there it also lists a whole slew of other ones. The link Mishell posted on the first page rates all kinds of products from 1-10 depending on the safety level and even breaks down the ingredients they think are unsafe and gives the explanation why...really good site!
