Anyone out there have a good recipe for a Hummingbird that they would like to share? I'm trying to recreate the one that Maureen (formerly from For Real) makes. It's been a couple of weeks since I've had one of hers and sure would like another.

Here's a link full of drink recipes including the Hummingbird and many others from the Caribbean. Bottoms up!

Why bother ?....they are so small, it must take a bunch to get full????
While on the beach we liked to start our mornings off with a Hummingbird or Dirty Banana before hitting the Red Stripe.
and then a water lol
Water is for squirrels.:)
Maureen does make good dirty bananas! I've never been able to make a dirty banana at home that even closely resembles one in Jamaica. I recently found those little honey bananas, though, in a Caribbean market here, and those seem to taste a little more authentic. Here is the recipe I've used (1 serving, but I always quadruple):
1 ounce rum-based coffee liqueur (Tia Maria)
1 ounce rum cream or Bailey's-type liquor
1 ounce dark rum
2 ounces milk (sometimes I use vanilla ice cream)
1/2 ounce simple syrup (a mixture of 1/2 water and 1/2 sugar that is simmered until sugar is dissolved)
1/2 banana
1 cup ice
DIRECTIONS:
Combine all ingredients in a blender. Blend for 1 minute, or until desired consistency.
Thanks Mary Ann, I'll give your recipe a try this weekend.
Awe squirrel! Miss you guys!!! Thanks for helping me have a great mind cleansing vacation!! Came home a with a new attitude that pretty sure someone's not gonna like......lol. Hope to see u next Feb. Give the squirrel a hug from me.
Bobmac, Maryann has pretty much nailed it...although, you can easily omit the hassle of making/adding simple syrup, and just add a bit more Tia or Rum Cream(very sweet)...I've seen them made with/without actual rum...but always make them with myself, for a stronger booze component.....Dirty Banana vs. Hummingbird is really just a color preference(subtle flavor diff)...have always seen a "strawberry syrup" added to the hummingbirds, but can't really find one in the states....what I did was get some grenadine, and mccormick strawberry extract, and pour/mix it into the grenadine bottle....works good ..enjoy:p
Sorry, Bobmac, I must have had dirty bananas on the brain. In reading Lisapat's post, I realized you were asking for hummingbird recipes! For hummingbirds, like Lisapat says, you would just add a strawberry syrup. The juice of sweetened frozen strawberries that you find in the frozen food section at the groc store works good too.
I never thought of that, Maryann....I've never much been a fan of grenadine, it's so sticky gross and pricey...froz. strawberries would be great:o
Momthor3, we've got our dates already picked for next year 2/8-2/18. We hope to see you back on the island. We're having our annual Jamaican party this Saturday at our house and Randy, Ann, Larry, Darlene, Wanda and Bob will all be there and I'll give them all your best.
Maryann, I'm going to try your recipe today and swap out the simple syrup with strawberry syrup and see how that tastes. I have to be prepared for the party tomorrow. Thanks
Bobmac have a great Jamaican party and say Hi from me to all.......our dates will cross for next year I am sure and already looking foreward to meeting up again on the beach. Thank Anne for the pictures on Facebook they are great!
Maryann, I used 1 oz of strawberry syrup instead of simple syrup and the drink was perfect. thanks
Maryann, Bobmac made great Hummingbirds with your recipe -- thanks for the help!
Momthor3, Had a great time hanging with you in Feb. Same time, same place next year?
Mmmm, squirrels like Hummingbirds for breakfast...
O I think squirrels like dirty bananas, mango daquiaris(?)(maybe that's me)and rum cream in her coffee(which is a very bad habit to try and break let me tell you, but the boss said i had to) as well. Next year we will try them all!!!! Love ya!! Same time, same place!!!
Good! I was going to ask how they turned out. What kind of rum did you use? I can never get them to taste as good as the ones in Negril.
Maryann, I used Tia Maria, Rum Cream and some white Don Q Puerto Rican rum. The strawberry syrup was smuckers. All we were missing was the sand for our toes to rest in.
Sounds good! I'm going to try with white rum next time.
