I just show them a copy of my US Passport and everything is irie.......
the Passport usually stays in the room safe the entire reach as we can't afford to loose that......
there have been times I have changed money without a passport but they gotten to know me after going there so often......lol
Cool Runnings, Marko
I went to the Cambio on Saturday Passport in pocket. Was never even asked for it.
I went to Banmark about 15 minutes ago and was asked for ID...
It is an official Jamaican government policy to show an ID and was implemented in conjunction with the USA's anti-money laundering laws.
Either DL or Passport will work as ID to cash travelers checks. In 13 years I have never used a cambio without being asked for ID.
when i went to the cambio next to the bank in town and they never asked for ID
I changed money at the Cambio in town last month without them asking for ID.
I would say take one or the other with you. Why take chances
Thanks everyone.
Good to know. Glad I wasn't asked for ID because I don't believe I had an ID one me when we exchanged money.
I changed money many times in the last 2 years at the Cambio across from Times Square and was never asked for ID and never carried ID. When the Cambio was closed there were money changers around that offered a little bit less. I sometimes changed with them so they could make a few bucks but was not short changed.
I exchange my money at the Cambio beside Scotia Bank or at the Cambio inside HiLo and has always been asked for my ID/Drivers License.
I think if you are exchanging over $100us you have to show it.
So far the ATM doesn't ask for ID (grin)
The $100 might be the trigger but not necessarily. I've been told at both the cambio downtown & at HiLo that you only need to show your ID once a year so you're "in the system". After that, not needed. I usually carry mine regardless. When I automatically showed ID while changing $$$, I was told the one time info.
Why not use the ATM? You get better rates and dont have to carry your passport around?
I have been here in Negril for a week now and been to the cambio 3 times, never was asked for ID and one time I was changing $200.
i go to the Cambio A LOT and never get asked for an ID. Then again, with my baseball cap, sunburned face, fanny pack and AI wrist band, I SPELL innocent tourist as soon as Iwalk in ....;)
I will say to take your ID just in case...what harm is it??
