New international terminal in Atlanta
Heard mention of this on the news, but just read up about it. Sounds good for those of us that go out of Atlanta.
Ticketing and security checkpoints for international only, and best of all, no more going back through security or rechecking luggage on return!!!
If you have never experienced this, it was a nightmare. This new setup will cut about 45 minutes off the return.
Re: New international terminal in Atlanta
If this is indeed the case...and you don't recheck your luggage ...does that mean that you cant put your duty free bottles in your bags for the next connection and consequently lose them to the next boarding?

Re: New international terminal in Atlanta
I was talking to someone about this terminal just yesterday and they said the kinks aren't worked out quite yet. The best experience I had was coming back from Aruba, THe US has customs agents in Aruba and you clear all of that there so when you get back to the US you are good to go.
Re: New international terminal in Atlanta
New terminal was open last tuesday when we returned. Out total time spent for immigrations and customs was about 45 min.
After customs you still have the oppurtunity to put your duty free liquids in your luggage.
When switching from the intl terminal to the domestic terminal, you will still have to pass thru a security checkpoint.

This is only for passengers staying in ATL. :)
No real changes for everyone else
For those continuing onward w/connecting flights the no 'carry-on' booze /going back through security & re-checking bags rules are still in effect-
ie- you have to 're-pack' thoses booze bottles :(

For those of you that have been through the new terminal, question for you. I have an upcoming trip to Jamaica (July 1st) and am making a connection from Minneapolis to Atlanta and only have 50 minutes going down. Is this enough time? On the return flight from Jamaica, the time between flights is 1 hour 40 minutes.
Re: New international terminal in Atlanta
That is not much time at all. If your first flight is not delayed, you probably can make it. ATL is a HUGE airport.

Not what I wanted to hear! Oh well at least there are a couple more flights that same day. Looks like we leave the same day!

You'll be good, that's the norm. It's always longer on the way back to clear customs, nooooo worries!!! :)
Re: New international terminal in Atlanta
Ann, I believe you have to ride a shuttle between terminals now.
Here is the brochure with information, maps, and all.

Re: New international terminal in Atlanta
Looks like the shuttle is a twelve minute ride to the international terminal.
Re: New international terminal in Atlanta
Assuming your MSP/ATL is ontime you shoudnt have a problem. Our ATL/MBJ flight left from a domestic gate/terminal only a few gates
from our inbound flight to ATL. 1 hour 40 min shoud be plenty of time on your return.
Re: New international terminal in Atlanta
Thanks everyone! I have made this connection before the new terminal opened and had no problems but think I had a little longer time frame as well. I know when I made the connection before, the gates where literally right next to each other. Couldn't have been any easier.
Re: New international terminal in Atlanta
Yeah, it looks like that is no longer the case. I didn't realize you had to catch a shuttle to the new international terminal, either. I read the brochure and was surprised. A 12 minute ride is a little strange!
Re: New international terminal in Atlanta
Outbound to Jamaica I had 50 minutes between flights and made it just fine. The gate service person was able to give me directions to the train and it was quick. I had time to spare. They were offering to check bags free at the gate to increase the overhead bin room.
Upon returning this past Saturday the new area is nice and it didn't take long to go through customs once the luggage arrived.
There was confusion as the de-plane information stated that you couldn't put your duty free liquids in your ongoing carryon bag, but the overhead recording at the international baggage area stated not to open your luggage before going through customs. Some people were placing rum bottles in their suitcases anyway.
The checked luggage "re-check" area was easy. Then the re-scan for DHS, they could have used a couple more stations, still didn't take too long.
Re: New international terminal in Atlanta
Many times we do our duty free shopping BEFORE heading to MBJ ............ gives you time to pack liquids in main luggage ahead of time .................there are numerous shops on the hip strip and elsewhere with prices competitive with the in airport stores
