Dave Escapes....P.N.S, Negril, and the Apparent Event Horizon (a trip report)

Dave needs to escape, he needs to get out...go somewhere. He is stressed from work, from life, and has been fighting off a case of P.N.S. since his last trip to Negril...One year of surfing Negril.com, reading trip reports, planning a new trip. He's been annoying his wife with daily stories, pictures, plans within plans...all about Negril.
Now they are both at the airport...Dave is tired, he has been up since 2:30am and his mind is wandering...and wondering...

Cool...nice beginning!

The flight was uneventful, quicker than previous years..."much better than last year" says Cindy (Dave's wife), and she tells the tale...the tale of a fateful trip...the sad tale of a 3 hour trip sitting behind an extremely flatulent old man, trapped in an aluminum tube, miles high and island bound...Dave's mind was still wandering...thinking about the portal...a small tear in the fabric of space/time...a doorway to an alternate reality that let them (this time) sit next to a nice, pleasant smelling young man traveling home to visit his family...
Smooth landing...Short lines...our ride was there waiting...A little bit of sadness mixed in with the excitement, it was supposed to be Alfred....
Michael our driver, Dave would soon find out, is a great guy...working with Alfred for the last few years, a good driver, honest, and very talkative...
Cindy is hungry, Dave...not so much...he's kind of tired and thinking about tonight...Seastar...would he be able to stay awake? He asks Michael to stop at Bigga's..."Ya Mon" he says, and they are there in no time...
Conch soup...Red Stripe...Recharge, and on our way to Idle Awhile...Time passes quickly...Then...

Simple beautiful!! Great report so far and I can't wait to hear more. I have visited Idle Awhile yet have never stayed there. It is a beautiful resort fi sure!! Great pictures too!!!

The room is great. Dave is feeling a little tired, his head is spinning and he can't find his wife..Dave gets changed and checks out the room hoping to find her...The room is not that big...They were supposed to unpack some of their things, and grab a drink at the bar...Relax before going to Seastar...

OK, so Dave has found his wife...she was doing what he should have been doing, Relaxing. "Let's go check out the beach bar and have a drink" he says to her...He gets a smile and a "ya mon, let's go"...Things are good.
They walk down to the bar...Not far Dave thinks...Good :-)

Dave calls Seastar for a pick up..."This place should be called Easy Star" he tells his wife. "Free pickup and drop off, dinner and a show...nice"

The bus to Seastar is here..."On time and already rocking" Dave thinks...this is a good start.
Everyone is in a good mood when they arrive at the gate...They pay for the show and the buffet and get in line.
The place is starting to get full already...It's Tawnee's birthday :-)
Long wait in line...Dave is looking for Boardies, he gets a hug from Tawnee and wishes her a happy birthday.
Rob and Lisa are there next to where he is standing, they exchange hellos...Dave feels slightly awkward...There is a strange thing that happens on Negril.com...
people read trip reports, look at pictures, read posts about each other, and get to a point where they feel like they know them...even though they really don't.
He wonders if Rob and Lisa feel this false sense of familiarity sometimes...
The line is moving, the food looks good...Their plates get packed
UH OH ! nowhere to sit ! Finally Dave finds a table up by the pool overlooking the bar and the stage...Perfect
These seats would later be described by Rasta Stan as "Box seats", an apt description :-)
The food is great...the show is on and the band is grooving...Dave makes his way down to the bar to get some drinks and runs into Rasta Stan, he remembers him from previous Boardie Bashes...
Dave points to the box seats and tells Stan, "That's my wife Cindy up there"...Stan, being the class act that he is walked all the way up there to greet her...nice guy.
The night rolled on...The drinks flowed...Stan and the band did a few numbers...lack of sleep and many drinks were taking their toll, things started to get a little blurry.
The drummers were drumming everyone into a trance like state...Time to go "Home"

Love the pics of Tawnee's B-day Bash and Rasta Stan's performance.
We arrived late to the party and missed all of that! Looks like a great time!

Man I missed this night by hours as I had to set sail on a big jet plane. I figured for my next reach that I will be there for two Saturdays so that I can take in two shows. Sounds like a great plan to me....

It was early in the morning on Sunday.
Saturday had been long and late...David was up with the sun.
He was sitting on the bed staring at his sleeping wife...
"AWAKE !

"What?" Cindy looked up at him with one eye, the other still pressed into the pillow.
"What was that?"
"Um, that was Jim Morrison".
"Is he here?" asked Cindy...If he's not here don't bother me...what time is it?
"Early" David said. "But we need to get up and do stuff, we're in Jamaica!"
He decided to hop in the shower and let her sleep a little more...

With the previous days stresses washed down the drain David and his wife were ready for some coffee, breakfast, and conversation.
Things were becoming more relaxed, slower...time to chill and "choose the day"

"What do you want to do today?" David asks.
His wife is not sure, she reminds him that he was the one that did all the research...made the "plans within plans". Didn't you say something about Seasplash? she asks.
"Yes, but that is later this afternoon" Says David ..."Did I tell you about my weird dream?"
"It was about swimming in the ocean, there were sea urchins everywhere but they weren't really urchins...they floated up and I could see they were lion fish...dozens of them...I couldn't move...creepy"
David couldn't stop thinking about the lion fish...

Yeah we closed it down at Ivan's on our last night so we didn't make it over to Seastar until after 10 and by the time we got there it seems most of the crowd had already left

Dave wants to do his part to help Jamaica...His trips there have given him so much, adventure, fun & relaxation, an adjusted attitude and a refreshed relationship, even a reason to keep going when things got tough. He doesn't know how it does it, but it does, and he wants to give back a little, so.....He (and his wife) will help protect Jamaica's precious reefs and fishing grounds from an invasive species...a fish "from foreign"...The Predatory, prickly, poisonous...and oh so tasty Lion Fish. Mmmmmm...Let's go to Canoe :-)

The Lion Fish comes out...Dave is feeling good about protecting Jamaica. He also has a sense of relief and satisfaction knowing that he is about to exact revenge on the creature that invaded his dreams...

The Lion Fish is delicious...Dave is talking to his wife...really talking, about anything and everything...Having fun, enjoying the food and drink, and her...He doesn't know what time it is, and he doesn't care...He thinks about how Jamaica can make you slow down and appreciate things, notice things...all the sights, smells, sounds, all the things you pass by and never think twice about...like the place next door...

Love your style, Lorax2! Que Bueno! You have truly given us the feel of your day. I liked canoe a bunch. Seeing your depictions is wonderful. Rob is right. This forum keeps your trip alive when you get back. And thanks for sharing.

I’m enjoying the beach life photos since my trip was almost all cliffs.

The “Easy Star” is spot on! I loved the prompt pick up and all the fun once you get there. Good pics and looks like everyone is having a blast.

I knew it! Love the Lionfish at Canoe....thanks for that picture, pure torture, and for doing your part to rid JA of this pesky trespasser. It is my mission as well. hahaha

I'm really diggin your writing, it's funny. (Great photos too)

That's Negril Yacht Club in disrepair Dave. So much history, such a great location. Sorry we missed you on Saturday at the SeaStar, we had to leave at 5:30 the next morning... Should have pulled the push on through...

This day is coming to an end...not now, but soon. Dave's wife reminds him again about going to Seasplash for the music and the webcast...It's a short walk down the beach from Idle Awhile past some familiar places...like the old For Real bar (RIP) :-), a favorite hang out that is only a memory now...Dave thinks to himself about how nothing is permanent in this world, still he wishes the old For Real was still there.

Dave has read that Seasplash has made some changes too, he hopes the results are better....
As they arrive, Dave and his wife are pleasantly surprised, the bar is looking good. The place is full and the music is good.

A good time is had by all...Dave and his wife take a seat at the bar and order some drinks. The music is grooving and Boardies are starting to arrive...
Tawnee is there...They briefly meet Clarity and Hubby-Man...Sitting next to them at the bar and offering up some great conversation is Tattoo Charlie.
There were several other sightings as the evening progressed. Dave couldn't help but thinking how boardie sightings are like bird watching, you learn about what they look like, their habits, likes and dislikes, and then you travel to an exotic location hoping to spot one of them. If you're very lucky you will have a closer encounter with your subject and get to know them better. :-)

Very nice people. He feels like he has known them for a while after just a few minutes..."It's so easy to meet people in Negril" he thinks..."lot's of people with a common goal"
Dave thinks to himself that it would be hard to imagine them not together...
