2 questions - ID and jerk chicken
I know I asked about jerk chicken a loooong time ago and went to Bourbon Beach last July - LOVED IT!!!! (We don't do the sauce! I just can't....) So anyway - looking for another place to go this week. I've read De Bar and 3 Dives is supposed to be good but one of them (thinking De Bar) is a really long wait. I just want really good chicken - no sauce. Any info would be appreciated.
Question #2 -We have never taken our dr. licenses or anything when off resort. I know - maybe kinda stupid but should we make sure to carry these from now on. I think I know the answer but had to ask so I can tell my husband you guys said so.
Thanks!!!!

Re: 2 questions - ID and jerk chicken
Look for a barrel guy on the beach rd.. his barrel says blue dandy.. I think he makes some of the best.. not too hot.
-
Re: 2 questions - ID and jerk chicken
#2 - take photocopies of your passports with you off resort. You don't have to worry about loss or damage, and it's smart to have, just in case...

Re: 2 questions - ID and jerk chicken
Best in the West Jerk is also excellent. Across the street from CocoLaPalm. I know you said you don't like sauce, but their sauce is great. It starts off sweet and then has a nice kick. Not too hot, just really nice. I had the jerk at 3 Dives and MUCH prefer Best in the West. I found 3 Dives sauce just too overpowering. If you like the sauce at Best in the West, they can sell you a jar for $5. I bought 4 back home with me. My son LOVES it ...

Re: 2 questions - ID and jerk chicken
I like Mr. Biggs, his chicken is really good. He is located next to Hidden Paridise. Not very hot, and ask for his mild sauce.

Re: 2 questions - ID and jerk chicken
For good Jerk Chicken...Best in the West. 3Dives service is kinda slow but most places are...the chicken is not that bad either.
I always carrying my license with me anywhere that I go.

Re: 2 questions - ID and jerk chicken
best in the west is good - but i am not a fan of 3 dives.. just sayin - Blue Dandy beats them both : ) if you cant find Blue - 'Step Aside' is a good runner up.. also if it is late at night - 'Fish' makes excellent chicken.. youll find him where ever there is a party

Re: 2 questions - ID and jerk chicken
So you asked about 3 Dives and Debar. They are both relatively close as they are the same family. Now 3 Dives is on the water and offers up an amazing sunset. Debar is on the morass side of the road and offer up an amazing vibe. So it really depends on what you are looking for. Both places are slow in the general sense, however if you want prepared to order you will wait regardless and that is a good thing. If it was me, Debar wins hands down as Eddie the owner has an amazing yard and the overall vibe suits my needs. He'll light a fire for you to kick back by, locals in the neighborhood seem to frequent the place, his beer is cold, and him and his brother Trevor are amazing host. But if you are flexible I would recommend the following: Go to 3 Dives and order up for sunset and take it all in. When you grow tired of the place hop in a route taxi and make your way to Debar. I would backtrack to Spyda's for a few and than hit Xtabi on the way for a few drinks and some cave action. After that it's time to shut it down at Eddie's. Or if you want to have some fun you can swing by C&D bar and have a great time listening to and singing some country with Connie before you hit Eddie's.
So cliffs notes is simple, the food is relatively close and it depends on what you are looking for. I do know that I will make this trek on my next reach and I cannot freaking wait....... Good times soon come.

Re: 2 questions - ID and jerk chicken
Step Aside is usually very good and he's out only late at night like they said, where the party is. I love 3 Dives food. My last reach I couldn't stay away from 3 dives.

Re: 2 questions - ID and jerk chicken
3 dives lobster is out of this world. Taking your Id is a good idea.

Re: 2 questions - ID and jerk chicken
I had some good chicken at Sun Beach. My GF doesn't like ultra spicy and she enjoyed. Also, talking to Dennis the Menace is a trip.

Re: 2 questions - ID and jerk chicken
Booger's got it exactly right between the 2 you asked about - 3 Dives and DeBar.
How about trying them both different days and giving us your report? - everyone has different tastes.
Now that you've found several jerk chicken places, and gotten new suggestions, too, I want to suggest an expansion.
Try going up to Red Dragon for their jerk pork - it's for lunch, though, not dinner.
It's ready about 12:30 or so, and served until it runs out - so is why not dinner.
I also don't like my food hot (spicy) - and their jerk pork can be. But if you ask them to pick out some pork and leave out the hot peppers they can do it no problem. It will still have a likkle of the hot flavor, which I do like, but not burn you. And their Red Stripes are really cold - go perfectly with it.
Any taxi driver will know where it is.
For the ID off resort - the only time I carry it is when I need to cash travelers checks.
But like some suggested, I also carry a copy of my passport ID page all the time.
It won't let you cash travelers checks, but in case the worse happens - like something medical - they will know who you are.

Re: 2 questions - ID and jerk chicken
My take:
Booger was right on with his advice. My personal opinion is that Eddie's De Bar has the best chicken, (Granny sauce, rice and peas and calalloo) of any place I have eaten in Negril PERIOD. The vibe there is awesome and I could (and have) sat there for hours and hours. Most food in Negril is "cooked to order" so its FRESH so you are gonna wait but its worth it.....unless you eat from a barrell but in my opinion you have to time it just right so its DONE but not cooked and sitting on the pit too long or it gets dry........I do love 3Dives and their food is great too - in my taste tho Eddie's edges them out by a nose jus barely.

3Dives view is so nice to watch the sunset too so I recommend BOTH also. And their grilled lobster yummy.
I loved the old Bourbon Beach jerk but have not tried them since they reopened. They used to have very authentic jerk using planks and pimento and the sauce was amazing.....HOT yes but if you mix a bit of ketchup in it and just DAB (lol) it was delish.
I always carry my ID (prefer to have it with me) but I think it depends on if you have a safe, etc. where you are staying. I do this wherever I travel but a copy is a good idea if you have a safe place to keep your stuff locked up.

Re: 2 questions - ID and jerk chicken
had Bourbon Beach on tuesday - it was the same as always - AMAZING.. seriously - some of the best - but the OP suggested they wanted something else so..... On ohiobuckeyes suggestion - i love Raggabones pork at red dragon - soooooooo good - and worth the walk/ or ride up the hill to get some.. BEST PORK IN NEGRIL..
i dont know - i have never really enjoyed three dives food - the view and vibe - great - but the chicken is - ehh... Driven by de bar hundreds of times - not sure why i havent gotten there - except knowing they are family to 3 dives makes me think i wouldnt like it any better - but admittedly - havent been so wont comment further... i still come back to Blue Dandy every trip - now thats finger licken good.

Re: 2 questions - ID and jerk chicken
So who's got the spiciest Jerk around these days? I used to love that black tar sauce at DeBus before it became Bourboun Beach.
I love the spicy pork the guy on the beach brings around (Dean?), I prefer it to Red Dragon's.
Jerk Lobster at 3-Dives is great, but pricey and the wait is ridiculous there sometimes, great place for sunset though.
-
Re: 2 questions - ID and jerk chicken
Dean, the Jerk Pork Guy, has the same pork as Ragabones/RedDragon. Mild or hot. Hot is Hot. Both are great.
Regarding 3Dives, I just had the 1 and 1/2 lobster special with riceandpeas and callaloo on Tuesday night. The lobster was good sized, the spare 1/2 was really big and the portions of sides were huge. $2500J and the wait was only as long as it took to cut the lobsters up, grill them and plate them, maybe 10 or 15 minutes tops. Chicken is going to take a bit longer, mon. I haven't had a long wait at 3Dives in a long time. Here's a secret tip....ask for your lobster "fried"!!

Re: 2 questions - ID and jerk chicken
Best Jerk Chicken is really subjective, isn't it! For restaurants, I like the beach bar at Coco and 3Dives. For barrels, I like Miller's across from Kuyaba(he'll bottle his granny sauce for you). If you don't mind a wait on Friday or Saturday night, the Simple and Fuzzy blue barrel in the cambio lot next to ValueMaster, at night only, has some awesome chicken. Biggs is good as is BestinWest.

Re: 2 questions - ID and jerk chicken
We enjoy the jerk chicken at BGrill (cliffs) next to the No Limit Bar. Bernard does his chicken (whole, half & quarter) without sauce. He also prepares soups (conch & chicken foot), seafood (fish, lobster & shrimp) and sides (pumpkin rice, breadfruit, corn & roasted potato).

Re: 2 questions - ID and jerk chicken
Wow!! You guys are great! We wanted to try Best in the West last year but our driver said BB was the best. You have given us some great places to try. Now just have to get my husband out and about more than once or twice during our trip! He can be a little difficult
As far as ID goes - I made copies of our passports and driver licenses so we'll make sure to take something with us just in case.
At the hotel now just waiting til our 5:30 am shuttle tomorrow to the airport!!! I'll let y'all know what we find out as far as the jerk chicken goes. May just have to do a comparison of some places while there.
Thanks again!
Cindy

Re: 2 questions - ID and jerk chicken
Me too, Marley! Hah!
3 Dives was so good. The sause is hot, real hot, but the chicken by itself is so good. I do eat the sause and it always went down betta with a Spitfire! Sitting out at the cliff bench with bird n beer is the life.

Re: 2 questions - ID and jerk chicken
bjritz - what is spitfire? I know it's beer but is it more like an ale or just a stronger RS? My husband would probably like that! What bars have it?
-
Re: 2 questions - ID and jerk chicken
carry copies of some kind of ID....you are in a place "where nobody knows your name" (as in Cheers)....when in another country.........wont be long same will apply in USA.........
-
Re: 2 questions - ID and jerk chicken
try ozzies, just up from sea splash and across the road, awsome imo
-
Re: 2 questions - ID and jerk chicken
I second Biggs near Hidden Paradise. He's just past Shamrock. He does his chicken fresh daily but it usually isn't ready until around 7PM. You can choose what sauce to add afterwards. I find the chicken very juicy and wonderful.

Re: 2 questions - ID and jerk chicken
Bumping.
So does the best place for jerk still stand as follows?
Jerk chicken
Eddie's DeBar
Bourban Beach
Jerk Pork
Ragabones/Red Dragon
Dean, the Jerk Pork Guy
Close contenders
BGrill
3 Dives
Anyone tried Scotchies or know how they compare? I read they are the best in the country...so many choices! I seriously can't wait to eat all the jerk I can get!
-
Re: 2 questions - ID and jerk chicken
Scotchies is the BEST, in my book. I've tried the others, and I've tried jerk all over the island (including the world-famous Boston jerk), but Scotchies has the best smoked flavor. They also have a consistent selection of roast yam, breadfruit, sw potato, bammie, bean & dumpling soup. I stop there each reach, often before I leave MoBay ... but ALWAYS before I board my plane, I take a to-go lunch with me for the flight.
Having said that, my favorite jerk sauce is one that's made by a jerk centre near Runaway Bay .... Ultimate Jerk Centre .... It's right across the street from the Green Grotto Caves on the Queens Hwy.

Thanks for the review Kritter. So its possible to stop by the Scotchies in MoBay on my way to Negril right? I'm hoping its not too far from the airport.
-
Re: 2 questions - ID and jerk chicken
Scotchies is about a 10 minute drive east of MoBay. So it's not exactly on the way to Negril, but is worth going out of the way if you've got time. If I'm arriving in Jamaica late in the day/evening, I don't hit Scotchies before Negril, but I ALWAYS make time for it before I board my flight to leave the island.

Re: 2 questions - ID and jerk chicken
Scotchies also has jerk sausage! So good! Wish I could find some in Negril, any one ever found it besides on the combo platter at Pushcart.
