Pooper and the Puppies
So a few weeks ago Debbie from Moonlight Villas makes a post about a spay and neuter clinic coming to Negril and how they needed additional volunteers. I almost immediately started looking at airfare to see if I could plan a surprise short trip for Pooper as well as hotel availability at our favorite spots. I almost pushed the button but figured since I had just told my boss a few days earlier that I was not taking vacation till Oct, I decided it was a no go. And then Debbie posted again and I figured what the hell. I sent my boss an email explaining very little but asking if he was good with a long weekend away. As soon as he responded back yes it was on. And I have to say that I am fortunate to be lucky and have a great boss. A quick call to Mom to see if she was good watching Boogs and she gave me the usual response, of course. LOVE YOU MOM!!!
Airfare on short notice is always dicey, however US Airways came thru with an ok fare and I pushed the button. Catcha had availability in Pisces for two nights so I pushed that button too. Seastar only had a room with 2 double beds so it was time to look elsewhere. Blue Cave had the penthouse open for the other 3 days so I pushed that button as well. Those who know me know that I look to push buttons, one way or another. :cool:A quick email to Kingsley James and our private ride is good to go.
So over a few beers I break the news to Pooper. Excited is an understatement of her reaction to the news. Pooper LOVES animals and is fortunate to have worked with them for years. I love making her happy with the big surprises as well as the little things and I'm sure this one stacked up there with the best.
So the day finally comes, I know 2 weeks is not a lot of time, but it felt like forever. We head off for the airport and crank the Joint on Sirius up to get into the vibe. The flight was uneventful and Kingsley was right there waiting as soon as we made it out the door.
He had an issue with a new driver and was hoping it wouldn't be an issue waiting for about 30 minutes until another couple showed up. No worries mon, let's go for a little ride. So he takes us up to a little area where some drivers hang out and we chill there for a bit. They have a little food trailer as well as a drink stand, and in no time it's time to go pick up the couple. They load in and off we are, Biggas soon come.

Re: Pooper and the Puppies
Steph lol! It is a learned behavior. My Dad was a charmer and I was able to sit back for years and learn the trade. And I truly feel that my wife brings me much more happiness than I could ever bring to her, so I'm just trying to catcha up.
So we pull in to Bigga's and instantly he graces us with an amazingly big smile. Or maybe he was just returning the amazingly big smile coming from Pooper and I. We had told our new found friends on the ride that they had to try out Bigga's as they had made Kingsley aware that all they needed was a beer stop and some Jerk. Bigga served up a half chicken to us with some bread and I asked him if he had any pork available. He said about 15 minutes when in reality the jerk pork lady showed up in about 5, score! We couldn't quite finish it up so Bigga made us a to go plate.
Attachment 16101
Pooper is still beaming.......
So we make our way down the road and soon enough we are at Sunset at the Palms dropping off the other couple. We had told them about Ivan's and since they liked Bigga's so much I knew we would soon see them. On the way in I had called Chicken as I heard he was back in town so we could all say hi. I wasn't even done checking in and Chicken pulls up. We hang out for a bit and than it's time to check out the room. Being a budget room right near the road I wasn't sure what to expect. It's cozy and tidy and made for a great place to stay for a couple of nights. And it had AC, which would prove its value as the trip went on. And it also has an outdoor shower, so Tizzy if you decide to rebook at Catcha one day you do not have to book Sagi, Moon, or Star to get your outdoor shower.
Attachment 16102
The only complaint I have about Pisces is the bathroom. Take a look at that toilet and how it's positioned near the vanity. You literally have to sit diagonal and on a round bowl toilet and this just doesn't work too well for a man. Minor but irritating. :p Throw a pedestal sink in and a few shelves and the problem is solved.
Attachment 16103
The patio is a nice chill spot that offers up a little privacy and has a great hammock. Pooper and I had a nice evening chilling in the hammock together reflecting on how we pulled this trip off. Good times with me and my honey.

Chill day at Catcha soon come....

Re: Pooper and the Puppies
Anxiously awaiting more!!! Being a retired RN after 37 years and a major dog lover.....I am so excited to hear more! Love, love it. Giving back is so very important in life and especially to an island we all love and adore. My most treasured event as a nurse, was a 6 year old Jamaican child that had a severely burned hand. Somehow, it all worked out with time and the wonderful blessings of the doctor I worked for at the time, our local hospital, and the major help of our state's senator at the time. The true highlight of my entire career and life. So, blessing sent to you and your lovely wife for taking time to give back. Please carry on and tell us all about it. We are all waiting patiently............:) Love our Jamaican pups!!

Re: Pooper and the Puppies
Need to take a step back real quick, I know typical Booger trip report. So after we check in Pooper is pooped and needs to hit the sack for awhile. I am running on adrenaline and sleep is not even an option. So I tuck her in and tell her I'm going to hit the street for a bit.
Where else to go but up to Seastar, so I make the 400 yard walk up the lane looking for my goat friend. No goat around, he must be mowing else where, or maybe he was curried. :( Pooper is not big on goat consumption, so good thing she never gets on the internet to read this. Make my way up to the gates and hit the guard up to see if Garrett is around. Wanted to say hi and give thanks for his help last reach. No Garrett so off to the bar I go. The place is dead, it is hot hot hot and I need a beer. Love the bar staff at Seastar by the way. You can sit here for hours having good conversation with both them and every other single person I have ever spoke to at Seastar. The only guy there was a Brit and we talked up some UFC for awhile. I love the UFC and it's not too often I get to chat someone up that knows and respects martial arts. Ninja, being the only exception in Negril. Had a few and figured it was time to get down to get pooped Pooper up from her power nap.
I was considering a walk to Rexy's however it was HOT and she takes awhile to get moving anyways. We had to make the 6PM orientation for the Spay/Neuter clinic at the All Age School right after a quick stop at the bar. Priorities people........
Attachment 16105
Tybone had a $hit eating grin on his face when he saw me walk up, which just helped reenforce that yep I am back home. I pulled up to my spot and next thing you know Rob and Lisa pull up and we talk about the webcast at C&D/Jenny's later on in the night. It didn't start till 7:30 if I remember right, so we should have plenty of time to make the start.
I had the security guard, not Mr Lewis, call a driver as I wanted to get a contact for the ride home. I already had 3 other drivers in my phone, so I thought all would be good. We head off to the school and walk into a big room in the back of the property and I was quite surprised at the amount of people there. This was a serious deal and it was obvious at that point that they planned on making a serious impact on the doggies in Negril. Dr Rist gave the orientation and laid out the plans for the next few days. Dr Rist is good people by the way and her efforts as well as the efforts of many others like Debbie at Moonlight Villas is what makes something of this size work so well.
The briefing is soon over and we set off to the webcast with a quick beer stop at Canoe. We hit the new/old digs at Jenny's and my first thought besides needing another beer is that this place is a nice bump up in size. Plenty of room to get plenty of boardies in this place and with the hospitality of Connie I'm sure things will be jumping soon.
A nice Jamaican lady gave us a tour of her digs a few steps away and it was really cool to see inside a locals home. Clean as a whistle and if it had AC, I would gladly move in. Speaking of a place to stay, I would not be surprised to see if Connie threw in a couple of rooms to help extend the operating hours. Some crap ordinance, law, what have you that they will close you down if you do not have rooms for guests to stay in by 9 or 10PM. Mi Yard kind of owns the after 10PM crowd as far as I know. If you know of another place please let me know, preferably on the West End. We did hit up American Pie our last night with a friend and it's an option as well, but is more of a younger crowd and this is were I hit my only real douche bag the entire stay.
So back to Connie's place. So we had a great time at the webcast that night, so great that I do not remember much. One thing not to forget about this place is that you will not always have a good time here, you will have a great time. Connie is a sweetheart and makes sure her guest have a grand time. She also provides coozies to keep those beers cold. And if someone goes there soon can you please bring her a couple as I jacked one on accident.
So after hitting the point of no return I whip out my phone and give a driver a call. Sorry mon me back home in Sav. So I call a second driver, sorry mon me home back in some other place not called Negril. So I call a third driver and than a fourth driver and same story. So if you have a consistent night time driver please post it in Gerry's thread he started recently. This is a need on the West End at night. Good thing an expat was kind enough to give us a lift. Thanks expat, you know who you are. :p
Sat chill day and Seastar show soon come.....

Hey Gerry, you and Poolguy have inspired me with your many frequent visits. And agreed, I have eaten at Bigga's four different times now and I have yet to see a speck. I asked him how many times he changes his shirt a day and he just smiled. I thought of flinging some granny sauce on his shirt and taking a quick pic, but he would pulverize me and that one doesn't need to go beyond a thought.

Yetta, you are so right about giving back. I do a lot with my work however I could always do more on my own. How much is your free time really worth? Only you can answer that, but for me it's an easy decision as the reward far outweighs the sacrifice.

Eden and Wypogi, I was able to capture some great smiles this trip of Pooper. This hubby needs to constantly earn points as I'm a little out of control. And if I see Harry the owner of Catcha on my next trip I'll even offer to do the vanity swap out myself for a beer or 12.

LOL, I overdid it as usual on this one and have laid low today so my body can recover. And while the little things keep things going, the big things play a key role as well.:p

Re: Pooper and the Puppies
So after a loooooong day on Friday I was hoping to get some sleep deep into Saturday morning. We also hit LTU the previous night to hang with Aubie and friends, so it wasn't exactly an early night.
My body is programmed to get up no later than 8, however I was able to sleep in till after 10. The bed in Pisces is really comfy and with the cool air from the AC I slept like a baby. Pooper was still in bed so I set off to Ivan's to grab one of their killer breakfast burritos. Kaneisha is now working days now and it was nice to be able to chat with her a bit. She had family moving into Star that day and she was extra happy for the day to unfold. I was fortunate to meet her family and hang out with them in the pool as well as at the bar that night before and after the Seastar show. Good peeps......
We met a cool couple from from the East Coast and the hubby was a Naval officer with a witty sense of humor. Wait till you see his pic and tell me who he reminds you of. We ended up hanging out quite a bit over the next couple of days and had a great time with them. Here's a hint: "You've waited too long and now you are in the 'friend zone.'"
So off we go up to Seastar with our new found Friends and make our way to pay up so we can stand up. The ever gracioius Chris cut a deal with the folks who volunteered for the clinic, so the great value of a show became a super value of a show. Alright, where's my buddy?
Attachment 16106
Ran into my buddy Shaky and I was glad to know Pooper's dance partner was in the house. The show started and next thing you know we are sitting up front rocking out to Steven West. And out of the blue he calls Pooper up on the stage and they sing a few lines together. Pooper did really well and even drew a standing ovation from the crowd. She sings better under pressure than she does around the house and did a great job.
Attachment 16107
Here's the rock star right after her duet. Steven West sings every show like its his last and I love taking in his shows.
Attachment 16108
Look at the neck, it tells the whole story.
And here's Pooper with our new found friends from Catcha.
Attachment 16109
Happy smile number 2.
We took off shortly after Pooper sang and headed back down to Ivan's. While the guys at the bar get a ton of attention the ladies make it great too. Here's to Rasta and whom I think is Karen, both nice and fun ladies.
Attachment 16110
You think Kaneisha are family are having a great time? Please excuse the crappy pic.
Attachment 16111
6 people in the pic and 5 of them have smiles. Yep, this is the typical night at Ivan's.
Attachment 16112
Next up is the clinic......

Re: Pooper and the Puppies
So as we are checking into Pisces for the night we ask the night guard, not Mr Lewis, if he would give us a wake up call. No problem mon......... So what seemed like 15 minutes later he is knocking on the door and yelling Pooper. Now Pooper likes to sleep, so I was surprised at how fast she jumped out of bed. I was a little hung over, but had promised her I would escort her to the school. We had arranged with Mauvette the night before to have Wayne, one of the recommended drivers for Catcha, pick us up. He was there right on the dot and soon we were off.
We pull up to the school but we only see a few locals with their pups and a couple of Jamaican volunteers. The day before must have been a long one, plus the fact the it was Sunday following up the Seastar show, so we weren't too worried. Soon enough the docs and techs started showing up and I split.
I headed back to Catcha as today was moving day and I had to get us ready for the move. I took advantage of the alone time and laid down for a bit to catch some rest. Shortly after I woke up and it was time to hit the road headed down to Blue Cave Castle. I had never stayed at Blue Cave before, however it was the first place I ever booked, but cancelled due to a date change. I was excited to see the Penthouse as I have read much about it. I hit the gates and Donald let me in and took me up to our room. The keys were hanging in the door and there was no official check in. He walked me around a little bit and took off with no mention of checking in later or anything. I liked the way this place works. Make your way down at your leisure and pay when you want. I think I made it down the second day to actually check in.
So what am I to do? I wanted to hit the beach and meet up with Rasta Dave at Seasplash so I hailed a route taxi and headed down the road. I was HUNGRY, so I stopped at Canoe to get some fries. The place was empty and I pulled up to the bar and ordered up. She mentioned that it might be a little bit of a wait as they were changing the oil out. I had zero problem with that and a few beers later my yummy Canoe hand cut fries showed up. Killed those in record time and headed down the road to the All Ages School to check in with Pooper to make sure thing all is well.
It was a nice little walk and when I showed up the place was a sea of activity. Dogs opened up on tables, dogs getting knocked out by Pooper, dogs laying on the ground a little ways away from the table still knocked out in recovery. It was like a Mash unit with activity everywhere. Diane from Moonlight was directing traffic and appeared to be the boss lady that day. Her passion for these animals is evident and she would come into the picture later in the day.
Attachment 16141
Here is your operating room before everyone showed up and started sterilizing and prepping the area for the spays/neuters. Folding tables that you would find at your local Home Depot and cardboard on the ground to keep the moisture to a minimum. Keeping the moisture to a minimum also keeps the mosquitos away. And it also served as the base for the doggies to lay on in recovery. The table in the bottom right was used as the area where they were prepped(shaved) and stayed until a Dr called for a new one. Pooper had already knocked them out on the ground prior to hitting the table. I believe they had 6 Dr's doing the procedures at one time and for one who's not used to insides hanging out, it was quite a sight. It was amazing and overwhelming all at the same time. It was a mix of Jamaican docs as well as docs from the mainland with a bunch of techs thrown in to assist.
Attachment 16142
Here is the recovery area that would be loaded up with dogs in a few hours, all waiting to wake up and be ready to the point that it was safe to get them back to their owners.
Attachment 16143
Here are some of the pups hoping to get adopted by a loving owner. They were brought in by the JSPCA and I fell in love with the big German Shepherd. We lost our Shepherd within the last year and he was a rescue as well, so we made an immediate connection. Pooper was pushing me to bring him home and it was so hard to not pull thru and do it. You have to understand something about Pooper. If I let her I would have over 20 dogs at my house. She constantly comes across rescues who could use a good home and I'm not sure how she handles the emotion of not understanding where they have been and where they will end up. I simply could not do her job for many reasons, but emotionally going thru that would kill me. It takes special people to care for animals......
Attachment 16144
Her is a close up and it pains me that some chump abused this beautiful dog. The head lady from the JSPCA assured us that she would place him in a good home. They had water bowls in their cage and they sat there watching the action awaiting their turn.
I was overwhelmed by the whole scene and had to split before I got too emotional. Good thing I had my shades on........It was truly amazing to watch and completely exceeded all expectations that I previously had. The day was young and I was off to the beach to hang with Rasta Dave.
Pulled up to the bar and ordered up a $150J Red Stripe and spotted Rasta Dave immediately. He was talking to a traveler as I made my way over and as soon as I caught his eye a big smile hit his face. It was cool to hang with Rasta Dave as he really did a great job of taking care of us on our April trip with all of our new found friends. Pooper had mentioned that she would like a soda when I was last at the clinic so it was time to head back after a few beers.
This was the day I also wore my shirt that read in big letters on the front "Don't hassle me, I'm local." It drew all sorts of laughs from the vendors/higglers and made for a completely relaxed and non pressured day. I'm taking 5 back for my next reach.
So I head back to the Best End and hit L&M for some supplies: copious amounts of beer, a couple of waters, and Pooper's soda. Just as I pull up to the counter two beers fall out of a six pack, hit the ground, and shoot beer all over a locals pants as well as all sorts of other stuff. I was ready to crawl into the racking and hide. The staff was however gracious and showed me where the baskets were so I wouldn't have to overload my arms and drop crap on the ground and their customers pants. Yep, I received shopping 101 at L&M. It would make for funny comments on each visit afterward.
Drop the beers off at Blue Cave and head down the road back to the All Age School to check on Pooper and give her her soda. Things were busy busy so I snuck in and grabbed her attention real quick and gave her the soda. The teams were running like a well oiled machine and many dogs were already in the recovery area spread out with some volunteers who were monitoring their progress. A lot of the owners were standing around taking the whole thing in and you could just see the joy in their eyes that these people were here helping them out. The scene was so surreal and for the second time in the day I had to split. I hear Pooper's passion all the time and to see roughly 30 people with Pooper's passion busting their asses on their dime was as I said earlier, overwhelming. Time to split again.
So I headed back up to Seastar and had a few beers and than headed back to Catcha to await Pooper's call to come get here. The time that she was supposed to be done had come and gone and after a half hour I decided to head back to the school. I showed up and they were still in full speed with a line up ready to go. This was going to be one long day for these volunteers. As I pulled up I heard Pooper yell out for help in restraining a big Rotweiller, so as what any other man would do when there lady cries out for help, I jumped on him and pinned him down so that they could knock him out. It was funny because she didn't even realize it was me until a few seconds later, and a big smile came across her face. Happy smile number 3............
I was geeked up after wrestling with that big boy so I stuck around and took it all in. Trying not to get in the way but trying to assist where I could. I had a runner running to get me beers in between, so it wasn't like I was missing my party.
I ended up helping relieve a doc folding surgical towels, the ones used so they could build their tool kits for the next day. Learned what an accordion fold was and built a nice stack. Sounds minor, but I was grateful to do anything to help. Assisted some owners in loading their puppies, refilled some water bowls, and pinned down a few more pups that were in no mood to get their balls cut off. Can you blame them? My point with naming what might seem like minor task is to show that anyone can volunteer and assist with these clinics. They need help and the more of the little things that can be done by volunteers the more time the docs and techs can have to do more spays and neuters.

Re: Pooper and the Puppies
They ended up wrapping up about 6:30, so it was roughly a 10 1/2 hour day with a few minutes taking out to eat. These people worked hard and I was grateful to be able to witness the whole scene in action and do just a little bit to help. Popper to this very hour is still raving about her experience and is hoping they ask her back to do some more clinics. If you need some additional inspiration to volunteer just check out the JSPCA website and read up on the stray animals on the island. It will break your heart as long as you have one.
Attachment 16147
Here is Pooper taking a swig of water with the team in action in the back and the young Doc she worked with the entire day doing the sedations.
Attachment 16148
Here's the recovery area in action. Pups in cages, pups on the ground, pups in transit. Movement everywhere and the folks you see in the background sat with each and everyone to make certain that all of them were well. Only one dog out of over 70 had complications that day and Debbie from Moonlight had her dog there to be the blood bank. Good thing because her puppy I believe saved that dogs life. So all dogs made it thru surgery and were sent home with their owners. What a freaking amazing day and this was just one of three.

You are a wonderful people to take spend the time and $$$ to go to Jamaica assist with spaying / neutering.
So glad you enjoyed your trip.

Re: Pooper and the Puppies
Pooper has a new clinic name it is QUICK DRAW cause she could get the job done faster then anyone. We were blessed to have her she stepped up to the plate like the true professional she is. We were short a RVT and Quick Draw filled in more then one set of shoes. We at the ISNN are hoping she will come back also her help was much needed and greatly appreciated. We spayed and neutered over 245 animals in the 3 days that the clinic was open. Gave out 100 collars and leashes and lots of advice. I am humbled by people like Pooper/Quick Draw and Booger who went out of there way and country to come make animals lives in Jamaica better. I looked the next day at he castle to see if I could see you but unfortunately we never hooked up again. I do know that we will meet again next time and enjoy a few drinks and a few war stories from the clinic. I will email you and let you know how to stay in touch with us. Again thank you for all you did QUICK DRAW AND POOPER...

Re: Pooper and the Puppies
I am loving this report for so many reasons Booger, but my two favorite reasons are
1) You are bringing to light a really great cause that you both participated in. Your story, pictures and recount is putting this event in the spotlight and will hopefully encourage more to participate and offer their time and/or money to a very worthy cause which is awesome!
and
2) I know how rewarding this was for both you and Pooper. I know how much of a dream come true this was for her, which also speaks volumes about the great person she is (correction: you both are) She has both texted AND told me the story of you wrestling the rottie numerous times, and each time she tells it with a great big smile and loads of excitement. I love listening to her talk about it over and over and hearing how happy she is. You did good, man

Re: Pooper and the Puppies
So I am going to put it out there. I gave away every collar and leash I have. If you could find room in your suitcases when you come to Negril it would be most appreciated if you could help me replenish the stock. Most common are small and medium size collars and leashes. People ring my bell all year round to get them so it would be nice to have some more. The buck stores are a great place to buy them. If you can please contact me when you reach and and I will be happy to pick them up...thanks for all your support with this project I could not do this without all the wonderful dog lovers that come to Negril...I can be reached at moonlightvilla@yahoo.com or 876-845-5996

Re: Pooper and the Puppies
What a fantastic report!!! Booger/Pooper it is so evident the passion you have for animals and how great of the both of you to be apart of such a wonderful cause. That German Sheppard almost sprung tears to my eyes while I read your report. I do hope that he finds a wonderful home if he has not yet. I'm inspired and I will in fact look into volunteering the next time I'm able to make it to Jamaica. Looking forward to reading the rest of your report.

Re: Pooper and the Puppies
Debbie- You are a sweetheart and if it wasn't for you we would have never known about or made the trip. Also, sorry we missed you as I didn't have wifi at BCC and received your message at the airport. I was also made aware from several cabbies that this isn't the only cause that you volunteer for and that you are quite active with the community and for that I have the utmost respect. Thank you.....
For all of you who have made the nice comments, thank you and I know if you are touched by this that you are just as caring. Keep in mind that there were roughly 30 other folks who worked there tails off, some for all 3 days. I could hang out with these folks all day long. And Manda I agree, there are all sorts of ways one can volunteer there time. I'm sure Rob and Lisa can give you some ideas if you hit them up. One I have read about and would like to do is volunteering at the kitchen that feeds some of the less fortunate. And if the time is not there to donate a little money will go a long way.
Sandie's nickname Quickdraw was given to her for her ability to slap a muzzle on from behind in record time. It is cool to watch her sneak up and with a quick motion the dog is muzzled before they saw it coming. Great way to keep all 10 fingers......

Re: Pooper and the Puppies
I also want to thank StuckintheUSA for your help with the clinic. If it was not for men like you we would not be able to run these clinics...TRANSPORT....
I am sure you hear that in your sleep for a few days after the clinic. Your help moving the animals from one place to another is very much appreciated. I do hope you read this.
