nothing better for a quick breakfast...cereal and honey bananas...hmmmmm.....puts our store bought to shame.....
I think we called them "bumpy" bananas. They look like them. The are SOOOOOOO sweet
And I do LOVE roast dreadfruit....
We call them finger bananas. There is nothing like them anywhere else. They really have flavor. When they get a little too ripe, we make smoothies without any sugar because they are sweet enough. Aw breadfruit! So good when roasted, then fried.
Yup...thought they were finger bananas also...but depends on who you ask & you have to respect the farmer that sells them to you...:)!
Roasted the breadfruit last night....oooohhhh so good with just a little salt!
My fiance loves breadfruit. He just discovered this recently. We will be there in a couple weeks for our honeymoon! Is there a recommended place to get it prepared in negril? How would they prepare it? And most importantly, will it still be in season?
Thanks!
ummmmmmmmmmmmm
so,
you arrive in a couple of weeks, eh
well,
hope-fully-ly they don't have a hurricane before then,
'cause hurricanes & strong-strong tropical storms tend-to LOVE to mash-up the bread-fruit trees first-thing.
bananas, & plantains get destroyed next
, and then the weak mango & ackee trees are blown-down.
however,
if no problems/issues, they'll be in-season somewhere (on the island)
WHERE to get it prepared in Negril..??... if you asking about one of the usual Ja-tourist eateries you're probably a duck-out-of-luck ----- 'cause unfortunately most tourist don't eat that stuff:::: too-many of 'em have stuck-in-a-rut taste-buds:::: dem want french fries ..... they don't want no breadfruit, boiled bananas, or boiled dumplings
PLUS,
and most-importantly
bread-fruit can be a '.dear.' item down-there
kinda-sorta hard to get at a food-for-sale eating place
in a post above i joke-ingly asked MissLisa (aka BNewb) if she roasted her breadfruit in the oven ---- as far as i know don't no nobody roast no breadfruit in the oven ---- waaaaaaaaaay to much cooking gas would be consumed. .... therefore, 'tis roasted over an open fire (e.g., wood or charcoal).
ummmmmmmmmmm
however,
i do recall a lady-boardie once mention that her *boyfriend* roasted some breadfruit in the oven --- when i read it i laughed soooooooooo hard::::
oh well
'twas her cooking-gas dime
lol
lol
lol
so it goes
anyhoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
so,
IF
you want roasted breadfruit, here's what i'd do:::::>>>> '.beg.' some somebody at your resort to purchase a couple at their local market (IF they can find it), and bring it back to the hotel/resort.
then,
build ya-self a wood fire at the resort,
on the beach
or outside your room.
lol
lol
hotel management is gonna LOVE LOVE this...!!..
roast 'til done
how long..???
&
any other roast-ing details/tips...??..::::: NOT a problem, just ask some somebody among the hotel staff --- they all know how to roast a breadfruit, and the lesson/instruction should/could/would be big-fun for all.
bone apper-teet
I was able to get roast breadfruit and fried breadfruit at MiYard last trip.
I like your plan as well Smith... nothing like starting a fire on hotel property to get a more authentic meal :)
I am afraid I am too lazy for that though and hit MiYard for my breadfruit fix.
there's all-ways more than one way to skin-a-cat na tru
having a hard-time finding breadfruit..???..
then, jus' pick it ya-self

but be careful and don't fall out of the tree
Nice to see you back pon da board Smith 744. :) Be happy !
at video-point::>> 1:58
you can see part of how bread fruit looks inside when done
and
a little of how to *prep* it

These videos make me miss JA as well as Smith's trip reports :)
I roasted it on top of the stove like a Jamaican friend taught me..
* Wow * ...!!!...
you are sure-ly highly-Blessed & most-fortunate
&
a sure-nuff Big-woman with looong-pockets
'cause me and the folks i hang/deal with can't afford all that cooking gas
ummmmmmmmmmmm
me-*thinks* I may need to change-up my circle of Ja-friends/associates/etc etc blah blah raa raa
i need to *up-grade* na tru
they can also be roasted on top of an electric stove...so deep pockets for current too....
unless, you're a tourist staying in a place that has a kitchen with an electric stove
and your JA friends is staying with you and teaching you....
then the current is part of rental rate...
Smith,
The roasting on the stove top only took about 35 mins. It turned out perfect!
And as with anywhere, to get a better idea of the range of economic classes, expanding your circle of friends would not hurt.
And come on man, you cant afford cooking gas? Lisa/Bnewb laughed while we are driving to MoBay (she is driving and cant type) and said that you have bought more airline tickets in the past two years than she has! (grin)
The cruise ship is in port (MoBay), and looking forward to seeing all the folks in town!
Check out Jenny's/C&D You want Jamaican Cuisine Connie has it. From a Jamaican Breakfast with fried plaintains, callalo, fried green banana, Ackee and saltfish, fried dumpling, roasted breadfruit. To Oxtail and Broadbeans, to Fish and Bammy. And don't for get her cakes and sweeet potatoe pudding.

* wow *
i'm sooooo-loving this thread-chat/reason-ing session
...GREAT exchange of ideas/suggestions
...folks think-ing out-of-the-box fi sure
...all ways got to have *option$*
the resort/lodge-ing w/ electric stove thing-y is brilliant
BUT:::>> may wanna-be discreet,
'cause some small-property-owners might have a *problem* with the impact doing-so will have on their current-bill.
for example,
when i'm staying at a resort, or someplace I'll use water, A/C, etc etc like i'm back-home in-foreign,
BUT,
when I'm staying in-country, there's noooooooooooo way I'd *waste* water like a RedStripe over-dosed foreigner ---- NOPE --- WON'T dew-wheat ..!!!!... noSir..!!..
my-landlord would chastise me
and
'cause i can't *.manage.* if it don't rain, and the water-tank is empty-ish
or
if it's dry-season, and the river is dry-dry, and can't wash body and/or clothing
or
when i walk down the road and/or lane to the water-pipe (on the side of the road), with my little bucket, and the Government has lock-ed-Off the water
nevertheless,
again:::>> if I'm at Beaches/Sandles/Rui/etc etc ---- i'd sure-nuff cook-up a whole heap of breadfruit on/in the stove ----- might even boil-up several gallons of coconut-oil or make a BIG-BIG pot of Jamaican '.run-down.' (to sell).
anyhooooooooooooooooooooooooo
loving this thread

NOW you-two done-gone & gotten cruel
