How long for a carver to create a piece?
Bet would like to have a wood carving of the name Negril to go with our Jamaica carving. See photo attached. It is 20" x 7"
We have looked our last two trips for one with no luck. We figure the options are to find a carver willing to do it when we first arrive and if they can not finish it before we go home
we would have them ship it to us. ( I would prefer to carry it home ) If we were sure it would not be completed within our 10 day stay we would try to contact a carver and preorder one.
Do any of you have an idea as to how long it might take to create a piece like this?
Thanks

Re: How long for a carver to create a piece?
I like that Jamaica sign. I'd like one for my tiki bar. Where did you get it?

Here is a link to a story about a good carver in Negril you could contact. This was written by a good friend and she says he can produce finished pieces made to order in a short time. Hope it helps.

Just curious, how much did something like the Jamaica piece run you?
I'm thinking about gifts and also possibly getting something done for my store to hang up.

A few years back a friend told Fidel in the craft market

what he wanted - his boat, his airplane, etc in a carving, that would have been in October and Fidel had it ready in Feb

That was a pretty complex piece from iron wood, I would imagine a sign piece could be done in a couple days
I like your piece
Re: How long for a carver to create a piece?
We had a large carving of a couple carved for us out of Iron Wood, took him 4-5 days. We paid him up front for most of it, he was someone the resort knew, we had his cell number. Was a risk, but ended up fine. See if you can get Iron Wood, it is very nice.

Re: How long for a carver to create a piece?
When we went to celebrate our first anniversary we wanted to have someone carve us a Dragonfly as an anniversary gift to ourselves. Dragonflies are my favorite and were the theme of our wedding. Our good friend Chicken recommended his friend, Bobby Ash, who is a well known carver, to do the job. We visited him at his house and explained what we wanted. I told him I wanted a carving of a large Dragonfly with our wedding date and the word Jamaica on it. We gave him a deposit, (always negotiate the cost up front) and told him how long we were in town. We came back the day before we were to leave and he was finishing it up....so it took him 5 days to complete. We were so happy with it

Re: How long for a carver to create a piece?
Thanks for the replies ans suggestions
Accompong - Where is Arthurs that is mentioned as JessRoys location? I did a quick scan of the Negril map and did not see it. ( The negril map is great but I wish there was an alphabetical list with location codes or something )
Chet & Coleen - We bought a piece from Mason last year on one of our strolls down the beach. We both were impressed with him.
Blake - I am not exactly sure where we got it or the cost. It was on the North coast in the Runaway Bay area and I believe it cost $20.00 but I am not sure. Bet did the deal on that one.
Marley - I like the Dragonfly. Bet likes Lizard pins / broaches so I may see about having a Lizard carved also.

There are vendors and carvers down in the market by the roundabout that have Negril just like your Jamaica done I have seen them and they also will stop and make a custom piece in a day or two, even the giant elephants, alligators and rasta stumps they get done in 3 days. I have seen many of the Dragonfly's down there also. Go to the back row of the market literally half way down on the left it is just across from the juice shack where I know for sure these could happen. This carver is great and he works hard he is right there.Attachment 16856.
Re: How long for a carver to create a piece?
Thanks for the info Shelly. We looked around a little in the craft market by the roundabout two years ago. We only managed to hit a few booths before we were overwhelmed.

Thanks, I thought it would be much more expensive, looks like I'm going to try to pack light and get some stuff done when I'm there.
Re: How long for a carver to create a piece?
Since we are staying at Catcha I thought I would ask if anyone knows a wood carver that has a shop / stand on the west end. I have only visited a couple stands in that area and can not remember seeing a wood carver.
