Suggestions, please - no room safe
Mi Lady and I will be utilizing a different resort for our holiday escape from Michigan in December. It will be the first time that we have stayed at a property which doesn't have a room safe or a front desk with a safety deposit box.
I know there are "travel safes" available and I could cut down on my cash by bringing TCs or a prepaid travel Visa card or using ATMs when necessary.
What other suggestions does the board have for how to handle valuables - camera, money, wallet, credit cards, etc. safely without the availability of a room safe? Does anyone have a travel safe that they would recommend?
I realize that any travel safe is just a deterrent and can be defeated with enough time. Thank you very much.
Just wondering.....

I suggest not naming the place you will be staying, as part of your question ☺

Re: Suggestions, please - no room safe
You can edit your post if you choose to remove the hotel name, Weathermon & Mi Lady.
Does the office have a safe that you may use? Not sure if that would be convenient, but maybe better than nothing.

Re: Suggestions, please - no room safe
Is the owner or some other "trusted" person on site, maybe his " trusted holder" services could be rented???..we had done with Val at Heartbeat if we were a little worried......

Re: Suggestions, please - no room safe
Do NOT put it in a little coffee mug on the top shelf ....

Re: Suggestions, please - no room safe
I've traveled around Europe, Mexico and the U.S. and usually just lock my valuables up in my suitcase (using a small, but sturdy, key lock) on the suitcase. I've never had problems-- at least so far!

Me, too, although I've invested in a pacsafe (pacsafe.com) which I put inside the suitcase. The pacsafe site no longer has what I purchased, at least on a quick glance.

Consider bringing a less valuable camera, carry less cash (visit atm when necessary), stuff your cash in your bra when you head out the door.

Re: Suggestions, please - no room safe
This can create a dilemma. I was in Belize and climbed into the ceiling thatched roof to hide a decent sum of money. You gotta be creative sometimes...lol.

Re: Suggestions, please - no room safe
We also have a pacsafe that we use and would highly recommend it. Used it for six month stay with never a problem. Just cable it to a solid structure in any non obvious place.

Re: Suggestions, please - no room safe
I don't bring anything that anyone would want to steal! Also, I'm quite talented at hiding cash in room (disclaimer: not recommended if you're under the influence or have poor short term memory, LOL) or on my person. Mostly I just use ATM to take out what little I need.

Re: Suggestions, please - no room safe
I have used the "hide things" method....problem is I hide them too good. LOL

Re: Suggestions, please - no room safe
Would I be correct in my thinking that your cash and passport etc., are safer on your person, than left unsecured or "hidden" in your unoccupied room? This of course involves not flashing your cash, not being intoxicated, etc. (I think you are less likely to be a victim of violent crime, than a so-called crime of opportunity). Valuable items like expensive jewelry or cameras should be left at home, alternately would be wise to stay at a place with safekeeping for such items. I think any place described as a resort in Negril would have some form of safekeeping service available.

Re: Suggestions, please - no room safe
Don't leave camera, purse, watches etc on a tabletop that is in front of or next to a window.
If you 'stash' around your room, make a list of where you put things, so you can find them again.

Re: Suggestions, please - no room safe
Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. I think I will try one of the Pac Safes, start wearing a bra, find a hut with a thatched roof (Oh, Belize!), etc. If I hide my valuables, I would never find them. I can't find stuff at home. For instance, I have a great filing system; its my retrieval system that needs a lot of work. "Honey, have you seen_________?" (Fill in the blank).
So, a Pacsafe, cheap camera, no money, leave smartphone at home, no jewelry. Sounds like a plan. As long as I have a pair of swim trunks, a tank top, and enough cash for a few RS, we'll be good to go.

If you go to your local "tobacco" shop where they sell pipes and adult videos.....they sell items that look like deoderent spray cans and coke cans, etc. They look totally real. The bottom unscrews off and you can hide money & credit cards, etc. in there. I think Spencers Gifts sell them too. I have no doubt you can find them on ebay. Just an idea.

I have also seen these at Home Depot. They have a Dr Pepper safe that fooled me. Great idea as you can throw a shaving cream one in your bag and nobody would even think about it. Glad you mentioned this Mr Twister, time to get one...
