Hey,how Ya doing, when did Ya get here, when Ya leaving ???????
Please shut up...I do not think about when I'm leaving. That necessary evil reality will be upon me,so I don't like to think or talk about it.Thank you.
Take it as a compliment Fred. Someone thinks that you are interesting enough to approach with these introductory questions. BTW When are you coming back???
I can't stand it either.
I especially don't care for "Where you stay?"
"On the West End."
"Wha hotel?"
"On the West End."
I've never been asked much of anything about where I stay after I return greetings.
Only time I was asked about where I was staying, it was pretty much them pointing out the fact that I had a wristband on from RIU.
So it was obvious. Though, for the most part they were impressed we ventured out.
?? sounds like someone just being friendly with you....no harm meant.
No disrespect meant.....just a conversation starter is my guess.....doubt people really care where you are staying just trying to make you feel welcome but again just my take on it.....no need to give details unless comfortable. Many do ask if you are enjoying yourself. "They" are our hosts and hostesses in this beautiful country. (embassadors of chill lol) Also trying to build relationships is part of the tourist business but just respectfully moving on is not considered rude so its all good......
Fred I can relate to not wanting to think about leaving until the ride to the airport :-)
1. A few days ago.
2. Not quite sure.
3. Down the beach/cliffs a ways.
4. Respect.
I always say I'm here for a few days, never tell where I stay at. I say down the road or along the beach.
Perhaps a hello, and keep walking! Lol BTW guilty as charged..
there ARE hustlers but NOT everyone you meet is trying to hustle you..
My wife was asked where she was staying and she naively answered.....later that evening a knock on the door....guess who. I try to be as vague as possible and still be polite, but its no ones business where you are staying.
you should keep your departure date to your self. along with where you are staying at.........
Not that this would happen.....
( some bad person hears that,,,,,,,,,, this tells them if you are to be scammed or "shoplifted", the best date is just before you leave the Island, as most people will just "skip" pursuing it with the law, and get on the plane....)
not accusing anybody for anything..but its what I would do....:)
Never intended to be intrusive by asking. Just being friendly and like to share info about different resorts and such. Food for thought tho.
WOW that was mean. I did not chastise anyone. I have my take on things and said so. I don't know all the answers. I was referring my experience only in most cases only.
Did you know that in Westmoreland it is said "where youa stay" and in St. Elizabeth it's "where you de stay"
I'm learning to write in Patois grammar finally ......
The point is it's not the question...it's who's asking it
It's hard for a visitor to tell the difference.. Don't paint with too broad a brush
Aye Aye Captain. Lesson learned.
I would never ask a Jamaican stranger where he or she lived.
I would think it impolite.
I was probably confused on the initial post and as it goes on, I am more confused so I will bow out.
Me too sweetness! :)
Jitterbug,
The vast majority of the time, no one means any harm by asking "where are you staying?". Heck, I ask it all the time and mean nothing harmful by it. Rather like asking someone where they are from, it is a simple conversation starter.
While telling a complete stranger where you are staying is probably not the smartest thing in the world to do, there is really no reason to think that each person asking you where you are staying is out to get you. And there is certainly no reason to take offense should they ask.
And after meeting both of you and knowing Sweetness rather well, I can assure you she was not chastising you in any way. Please dont take needless offense.
Hey Rob, has anyone ever told you, you are a breath of fresh air? Well I think you are!:)
Geezzzzz....now I'm scared to ask those questions....LOL!
They are very common conversation starters here (common sense should apply)...but I did learn early on not to ask when someone's leaving....no one likes to think about that...:)
I'm worried if I tell Rob where I'm staying he may knock on my door one night!:(
I love telling people we are staying at Hedo and then watching the expression on their face ;>}
Sounds like some folks need to lighten up! :)
Sweetness' name implies exactly who she is... Sweet! I've never met her personally & even I know she doesn't have an unlovely bone in her body!
Also, I would love to have those questions asked! It would mean I was in Jamaica! :)
I just meant that, say if I'm leaving tomorrow,I'm at the bar and someone asks when Im leaving then I get that negative thought in my head......I just want to ignore it as long as possible and catch the cab to MoBay with sand still in my shoes.......
I am aware that some will size you up based on where you are staying...If you say Sandals, they think you can pay more.
Unless the question is asked by someone I know or that someone I know knows(?!?), I usually don't name the property...I don't take offense, though. Negril is still kind of a small town. If somebody REALLY wanted to learn where you were staying, it would take only slightly longer than asking you...
thanks Steph and Rob. Don't want anyone to feel bad though about posting what they want here - we have all had different experiences. As long as there is not harm to others we should be free to share. IMHO
bill/donna - you make me SMILE
LOL@ dash's remark
agree wid wat Rob said too ...
some ppls remark sometimes 'feel' sharp an bitta! the written word is oftentimes misinterpreted ..even wid the use of di smiley dem.
^^^^ :) Absolutely the truth.
