Re: BEACH, er, SEAWEED WALK 10/27/2012 Southbound
The sea was returning the empties! Guess it was great for the shell collectors as long as you could handle the smell!

No worries mon! It has been cleaned up. The government came in with backhoes and trucks and carted it all off - the places that received less were able to simply bury it as it came in....

Yes, we saw backhoes in action at the Treehouse, Margaritaville, and Rondel VIllage. Unfortunately, on those days I left my camera in the room. It was constantly getting coated with salt spray from the winds coming in off the sea and I was weary of trying to keep the lens clean. Everyting was coated - sunglasses, hair, clothes, contact lenses, cameras, windows, etc. It even coated and killed some of the vegetation, which will come back.

We were delayed flying on Wednesday due to Hurricane Sandy and flew out Friday, October 26th and I can tell you, we have been to Negril 8 times and never saw the waves crashing that hard so your pictures do not surprise me at all. Hubby was a bit nervous about flying out due to the wind and waves, but the flight was smooth and on time.

We were there in April and there was a lot of seaweed for a few days but that is just riduculous!

It did smell bad but yes it is cleaned up now and the beach is back to being sea-weed free.

Yeah, the odor was a real stomach turner at times.

Well, it is good that the ocean regurgitated it out of its system .... and that it was removed. Good news for the reefs!! It'll give some of the coral larvae a fresh spot on the reefs for attachment.

They should use all that for a big compost pile. Use it for gardens up in the hills. Lots of places nothing but rockstone. Grow veggies and stuff. :D

Re: BEACH, er, SEAWEED WALK 10/27/2012 Southbound
In the "old days" seaweed was tossed up against a houses foundation before winter for insulation and the next spring it was turned into the fields to fertilize. Just natural.

Re: BEACH, er, SEAWEED WALK 10/27/2012 Southbound
WOW, poor baby conchs, dead. Thats a shame. I know exactly where this is, feel for my gardener friends there

Re: BEACH, er, SEAWEED WALK 10/27/2012 Southbound
Dash we do that here, with lobster shells, to fertilize a field. And seaweed on our bulbs to protect against snow during the winter.
Were those conchs, baby conch shells empty? Not alive?

Re: BEACH, er, SEAWEED WALK 10/27/2012 Southbound
Treehouse paid for a private backhoe, cleaned up in 2 days. We dug and dug ( me too) then buried it

Some of the conch had been alive when the sea brought them to the beach.
