New Magicjack app means free International calls!

Hey peeps,

THE MAGICJACK ANDROID APP IS OUT!

I just posted a blog about how to make free international calls from Jamaica. If your coming down soon, grab yourself a cheap android tablet($60-$80usd) and install the magicjack app. If you already have an android phone or device then just install the app and your good to go. I've been making free calls to friends in NY from Negril for the past couple weeks and thought I should share this.

You can use the wifi setting on any cellphone for free calls. No app required

I make free calls any where in the world using wifi....got calls from the states when i was in Thailand and negril and it's crystal clear

How? I used Google Hangouts my last trip and all was good except for the poor sound. Thanks for sharing....

Settings....Wi-Fi....Available Networks......Password.....Connect. I get and place calls in all corners of the planet with great reception. My phone is cheap and 4 years old so i know all the new devises have better wifi. This is all done on your phone. I have no idea what google hangout is.

I just researched what "kbisiar" is refering to and it seems legit. You need a VoIP app for your phone and that's about it. :cool:

any VoIP app would work on any phone with wifi
And nowadays there are lots of places in Negril with wifi....pretty cool!

Looks like Icall is free and has video calling as well (Available for Android and Iphone devices)

Sorry, but an App is still required. You can't make phone calls over WiFi without an App. MagicJack is an App.

The avg VoIP app does not have the features like the Magicjack does, and it's a lot simpler for most people. Keep in mind I am not benefiting in any way from MagicJack, only alerting people to the new app. For example I use Skype a lot, but find MJ much more functional for regular calls.

If your VoIP app can give you a free US number for friends and family to call YOU back (in Jamaica) at local rates to them, then hey stick with it. I like the fact that my friends in Florida can reach me now at a Florida number on my tablet which doesn't have a sim card.

Humm. The tech guy in my office is telling me my phone(Samsung Katalyst) has a bunch of unique features in order to make wifi international calls. My bad...i thought all phones could do this since mine was so cheap. Now im feeling pretty lucky about my cheap phone

Hi there, I am new to the cell phone...just got my first one a few months ago. I have a Samsung galaxy...and I did get the Magicjack app last night. A couple of questions...if I take the phone to Jamaica with me, do I have to have my data "off" and free wifi on when attempting to make international calls using the app? I am worries that I will get home and receive an extra large bill....can I use it here in Canada to call USA and Jamaica?

Yes, turn your data off or you will get hit with huge roaming charges. The MagicJack app would use data to make the calls and if you are using your phone's data plan in another country, the costs can be shocking. On WiFi, you would be fine.

Sorry, I'm not technical at all. I have an Iphone so is this what I do? Download the app from Itunes. Is it free? Does "turning your data off" mean putting it in airplane mode? And then I can call local or to the US while in Jamaica and it will be no charge?

You are exactly right :)

Always make sure it is in airplane mode while in Negril (that way you are not using your cell data and therefore no roaming charges) Then just find a wifi connection and connect to it, many places have them now, some are open some have a password which usually a drink or food will get you if you ask. Then once you have a wifi connection you can surf the internet, check emails, etc And also use the magicjack app to call home! All for free :)

Are people having success with this?

It appears MJ (and other apps) allows you to call free in Canada & US but only internationally if the phone you're calling has the app. And reading MJ reviews, it appears that you have to pay an annual fee? I need to call people who don't have the app (can't or won't).

I can text free internationally with textme2. Unless I find an app that will let me call internationally with no extras or app restrictions, I'll stick with my cheap Lime while in Jamaica and use wifi for emailing.

I have the Mj app on my phone and will try to use it in 3 days. I will let you know how it works out .
